Reading these forums, those involving that great love of many nations, the automobile, it strikes me that of all the manufacturers they all have model names that equate to power words, like Explorer as in the case of the Ford, Warrior in the case of the Mitsubishi and so on. Could it be that the very model name of the auto is the reason for aquiring said vehicle or do you actually look at the actual specifications with a jaundiced eye.

If an automobile had a soft name such as 'Kitten' or 'Puppy', (yes, I know the US had a 'Rabbit', it was 'polo' here), and that auto was the everything you need, would you buy it, or find something with a better model name ?

Are manufacturers actually in reality turning out the same old junk, but creating a fantasy by the model name, colour scheme and advertising material ?

Just look across the ranges of auto available from whatever manufacturer, does it not seem as everything is more or less the same per vehicle usage type ? Is this love of brands actually false and the attention really should be on the best value for money , the manufacturer who tries hardest gets the sales ?

Really, because of our love of the auto, could it be the manufacturers have us hood winked, they have made us believe they are that important to us, because their produce could be said to define a lifestyle.

If they want to sell a car they have to name one "the Pussy" because every guy (almost) is dying to get inside of one and many want to own one.

Aneirin, I think they called it the Rabbit in order to convey that it was small and quick.

I don't choose vehicles based on name, although I do have a pref for maker (CHEVY!!! WOOHOO!!).

But there'd be havoc on the roads! The drivers would hit 60 in under 3 seconds and then fall asleep at the wheel, just when the engine had gotten warmed up too.

Yes, it was called a Polo over here.

Mitsubishi Shogun is in the rest of the world, a Pajero, but I heard pajero means something else in South America.

There used to be a joke about that, something along the lines of ; what does a clitoris and and a Ford XR3i have in common

I dunno, Mercedes uses numbers as does Porsche and many foreign automakers.

Meantime I have had Cougars, Lesabres, Toronados, Park Avenues, Sierras, well you get my drift.

We, in this country also pay X.99 for this, XX.99 for that, XXX.95 for another.

Do they think people are stupid,,,,,,,, or do they KNOW that people are stupid ?

I've never paid any attention to the names of models. First and foremost for me would be reliability and economy. Both in initial price but also in owning, operating and maintaining. Then, I look for a pleasing appearance.

My newest car is just a number, 3.

No idea Pa. I prefer a great paint job and chrome myself. My favourite, of all the cars I've ever owned was a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Baritz, and it had plenty of both paint and chrome.

Cars are very much status symbols and sold as a way to upgrade or maintain your ego or lack thereof.  How about the cliche' of the middle age crisis where a guy starts dressing younger, trades in his wife for a newer model and gets an expensive sports car?  Some of the most macho advertising on TV is of course for the big-ass trucks and the voice over is a very deep, masculine voice while the visual is burly construction workers loading cement or pulling something huge and heavy from the side of a cliff.

If we demanded truth in the advertising in car names there would be names like the gas guzzler, the lemon, the dead weight, the money pit and the fright of your life!

I am very much a pragmatist and prefer a vehicle that is safe, reliable and has great gas mileage while being comfortable for me to drive and my passengers to relax.  I have usually had one type of hatchback or another which makes for a good amount of storage space when hauling groceries, theatre props, music equipment, art supplies or leather gear.

Well, there certainly is a lot of marketing to lifestyle, particularly at the upper and lowermost ends of the market, but I don't know that name really has a lot to do with it. Cadillac started with numbers, moved to names, and has now moved to meaningless alphabet soup (bad idea, in my opinion). Although, once a manufacturer has a major hit with a particular model name, they'll work the hell out of it (911, Corvette, Mustang), sometimes even revitalizing names with a "history" to shill a new product (OMG the Mopar message boards were just unreadable when Chrysler revealed that the new Charger production model would have 4 doors... people were absolutely unhinged over it!).

I will mention one thing, though- if you look at model trim level designations as a whole, across the whole of the automotive spectrum, there are a relatively small number of letters that reappear over and over... and foremost among them are S E X. Srsly!
