This was completely preventable and Wal Mart has a responsibility to its customers not have something like this happen.

It was really only a matter of time and it could have been any big box or department store but something needs be done about it.

The easiest remedy would be some type of lottery or here is a novel idea... how about fully stocking the product and give rain checks when you run out!

Humanity is a beautiful thing, ain't it?

Where I work we didn't really have a rush at all today, aside from about 15 minutes after we opened.  Otherwise, it was actually pretty slow, despite some insane deals.

Ok, a worker gets stomped to death and you're talking about responsibility to the CUSTOMERS?????????????

Don't the customers have a responsibility to not stomp on the employees?  (Granted, it's tempting at times.....)

IdiotMale -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:08:07 PM)

I would have enjoyed being stomped on by a bunch of attractive women at Walmart...but that's another story for a different day I suppose.

MissIsis -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:08:47 PM)

I doubt they will change their practices.  They really don't want to have enough of those products on hand for everyone.  They aren't making anything on those things & probably are losing money on them.   They make money on all the impulse buys people purchase once they are in the store.  It would be much more fair to have reasonable prices, but they wouldn't draw in those crowds they want.  That is sad.

LumusandtheLady -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:15:15 PM)

[sm=dunno.gif]  Whatever happened to common courtesy and good manners? Instead we've reached a point of grab and snatch, run 'em over and devil take the hindmost. I like a good deal and shop around but is a 34 year old's life worth saving a few bucks? I saw in the article on Yahoo news that 4 other people were hospitalized in this same incident, including a pregnant woman. Where is the line drawn in human decency?

marie2 -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:23:21 PM)

Involuntary manslaughter.  I hope they are able to indentify those responsible from the surveillance cameras, and I hope they're prosecuted.  Someone's life is over so others could save a few bucks on their holiday shopping.  Such an unfortunate and senseless incident.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:36:07 PM)

I told my Sir a few days ago someone could probably be trampled to death on Black Friday and now I see this. I'm not surprised that it happened but I am surprised at the location. I thought Walmart was open 24 hours a day. How could anyone  break down doors at a store that is already open? I never shop in the morning on Black Friday. Too dangerous.

It was that bastard Bill Clintons fault!!

Granted, Walmart could have done a few things ( like ask for police assistance) to prevent it, but good god! The CUSTOMERS also have a responsability here too! It was the CUSTOMERS that trampled that guy who was only doing his job, not the other way around. Have we fallen so far to lay blame on the employee because he 'got in the way'? Are there no manners anymore?

Hardly. This was at a Wal-Mart, not a cigar shop.

mistoferin -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:43:13 PM)

I don't think anyone is blaming the employee. But Wal-mart has a huge slice of the responsibility in this. They and other retailers post those ads knowing full well the frenzy they will create. I'm amazed it took this long before someone died.

Attractive women....at WalMart???  [:D]

A friend of mine told me that Best Buy handed out numbers to the people in line. That way, when they get in the store, they have "dibs" on the merchandise first. I think Best Buy is one of the better organized stores for big sales -- they had a good system here in Huntsville when we had our tax-free weekend. I think other stores could learn something from them. It's hard to understand that people would trample a person -- then not even help him when he falls to the ground -- just for the sake of a "good deal." Sad.

hm. so Wal-Mart has a responsibility to its customers not to have its customers stampede and kill one of their employees.

It is amazing just how selfish people can be.  Just sickening.

FlamingRedhead -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:54:33 PM)

WTF???  Why should Wal-Mart be responsible?  I think it's absurd to expect a store to need police in full riot gear for a sale on TVs and vacuum cleaners.  The easiest remedy would be conducting business as usual with no ridiculous "sale" items that you can get all year long if you choose to shop around since people seem to have lost all their common sense and decency.  I LOVE shopping.  However, I will never camp out in front of a store for any reason.  I have never jumped out of bed at the crack of dawn to go shopping.  I don't go shopping the day after Thanksgiving.  In fact, this is the absolute worst time of year to shop.  I find the behavior of everyone incredibly rude and annoying.

Meandwho -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 1:57:23 PM)

And at Toys R Us out here on the west coast, there was a shooting that they are calling a murder suicide. Reports say one victim was a 6 year old girl. WTF and happy holidays!

TNstepsout -> RE: Black Friday Death at Wal-Mart (11/28/2008 2:22:45 PM)

It's terribly tragic and preventable. I was just watching a "dumbest criminals" episode last night that featured "dumbest shoppers" and I couldn't believe how insane those mobs were. People were getting into fights, falling and getting injured and you know it was just a matter of time before something like this happened. Theses stores should have seen the writing on the wall years ago and set up these events so they are not so unruly but instead they encourage the feeding frenzy. Oh and are the people to blame? YES!!!

Any wonder someone was killed? What the hell is wrong with people anyway?
