Well, today I put the Frizz free serum stuff in, because I had that one here, so far, so good, it's behaving, but I've not combed it. It is as it dried, and strangely, not tangled. Geeeee, could this be a good excuse not to comb the stuff, I positively hate combing my hair, but do so in the vain hope it at least looks respectable for a little while.

I have in the past tried the organic root stimulator products, both in olive oil and jojoba, that stuff recommended by a black friend, it works quite well, but is messy and insects seem attracted to the jojoba variant, especially June bugs, nasty things.

I have curly brown hair and wore it long, middle of my back long, for years. Simply put any solution is going to require a lot of time and effort.

Change shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis. This seems absurd but it does make a difference.

Keep the ends trimmed. Split ends are apparently where most tangling starts.

Hot oil conditioners. long hair is almost by definition damaged hair and the hot oil conditioners really give it back what its lost.

Brush it out morning and evening. Work out any tangles as soon as they happen.

I also found that avoiding blow drying madea big difference. Of course with a thick mass of curly hair you can't wait for air drying all the time but use a low heat setting and a diffuser to keep the heat from being so intense on the hair.

Rather than use a comb try a pick to lift and separate curls.  And the recommendation for a loose braid or two at night is very good.  Blot with a fine towel to dry and be gentle with it.  An easy home treatment is a mayonaise masque.  You need to have a conditioning cap to keep your hair in one place while being treated.  I get the conditioning caps here for about $2 for 4 of them in the drug store aisle with all the brushes and combs and hair ties.  Use an old towel draped around your shoulders and secure with some clothes pins while you wait for an hour.

I use daily multi-vitamins specifically for hair, skin and nails as my nails are thin and break easily.  And fish oil supplements are good for cholestrol levels and healthy skin and hair.

Use a Pik and apply a teeny-tiny bit of olive oil when it is almost dry.  Even the oil and water in a dollar store spritzer bottle, shake and apply after hair is dry and comb through again with the pik.

I was also going to suggest using a pony tail but then the post came in and said to watch out for the receding hair line.  I am currently undoing my pony tail and using the hair to cover my receding hair line. Lord, the only answer may be super glue and plenty of it.

I use the moisturizing shampoo and conditioner from trader joes, and also have unruly curly/wavy hair.

Btw, curly hair is not "broken." The disulfide bridges between proteins that make up the hair shaft occur more often and at shorter intervals than in straight hair. There is nothing broken or wrong about curly hair.
