The reason that the gorilla penis and testes are small is the same reason that the human penis and testes are relatively large: competition. A silverback gorilla tends to live in a single-male, multi-female group, so his body is designed to keep other males from approaching his potential mates. That's how he competes and gets his genes passed on.

A human male always lives in a large, multi-male and multi-female group, so his body is designed to compete in different ways. Any female will always have access to multiple males, so he needs to deliver the largest quantity of semen he can and try to penetrate more deeply than other males. This is far more important to passing on his genes than overall body size.

*ahem* So. Long live the multi-male, multi-female group! [:D]

How, exactly?  I'm struggling to see a man approaching an amorous silverback just as he and his lady-love are beginning to dance the jiggy-jig.  Phew - anthropologists certainly earn their wages, don't they?

Interesting about the "all states" bit.  I had no idea that gorillas were so widespread in the USA.  How marvelous and what a truly free country the USA really is!  I hope that their equal treatment is properly enshrined in law, though.

*giggle*  "The Doctors" discussed human penis size a week or two ago.  (thedoctorstv.com)  The were saying that an 1 1/2 inches is sufficient to get the job done.  However, pound for pound and inch per inch, human males have huge members.  As Shakti mentioned, in a society where there are many males competing for the attention of the females, purportionaly large penis size is totally because Females prefer larger ones. 

Now, if we take this one step further, it is fairly well known that black men have the size advantage over other races.  Could that be because in the hotter climates where people wore less clothing, ladies could more quickly identify which handsome stud had the better package to offer?

I prefer a male who has a bit of "fight" in him, and I like My females with the same "spice".  Whimpy doormats do NOTHING for Me, its like-too easy.  I think a Dominant needs a bit of a challenge once in a while to show Her mettle...Be a brat occassionally and see WHERE that gets ya!

Actually, I didn't say it was driven by female preference--it's just driven by successful impregnation. The thing about human females, like chimpanzee females and some other species, is that we don't HAVE to choose one male over the others. We can have sex with as many as we want.

Human females can (and do) often have sex with more than one male. And it's because females have access to multiple males that penis size AND the size of testes tend to increase. Just making a single choice wouldn't do the trick; if it had, human penis sizes would have been steadily decreasing since the invention of clothing. [8D] Biologically speaking, a human penis is not a peacock's fan-tail, mainly there for show: it's a delivery system for genetic material, and size DOES matter.

Desmond Morris's theory went like this.

When pre-humans went on all fours, males would enter females from the rear, like other primates.  Then humans stood on their feet.  In this position, it's easier to enter from the front.  But, woe, the female buttocks - the things that do the switching for males of other primate species, were no longer visible from the front.  Men are visual - they have to see something to switch the lever on. So women evolved buttock-shaped breasts. 

Not my theory, note, Desmond Morris's.  Don't whip the messenger, unless he's laughing while explaining the theory, which I'm not, of course.

Couldn't prehistoric men just fit mirrors to their cave ceilings?
