What you're saying is that you're willing to put other road users at all kinds of risk, unless there's somebody else in the car who might call you on your behaviour, right?

If that's how you want to look at it, sure. I won't argue the point. Is there a particular reason you're saying so? Have I in some way offended? I'm not looking to pick fights here. I just don't think it's that unique a phenomenon.

I too detected a trace of hostility- but I'm new here, and Beeble has tons of posts- many of which are spot-on from what I've seen. The last thing I want to do is antagonize. I'm just saying, 'WTF?', because the attack was a bit unexpected.

I agree, Wickedondine!  I am guessing this is just a sore spot, he's not a hostile or nasty person at all.

Then I definitely won't take it personally. In my area, pushy driving is a survival trait.

I have to drive!  Besides a tendency toward carsickness (Love that Meniere's!) I have one of those perfect directional senses, too.  I am not timid, ice, fog, and snow do not frighten me (and I understand pesky things like stopping distance), and I just adore driving.

I LOVE to drive!

Of course, now I have to have one hand on the steering wheel....and the other on the road!

YOU  are an inspiration, just make sure on that left hand you have really long nails so when you are done you still have a decent manicure!

Yes, you're imagining it.  If any men claim that they're an exceptionally good driver or suggest that the safety of other road users only matters when there's somebody else in your car, I'll take them up on it, too.

When under pressure for work in my 20s I was a very fast and stupid driver (not that I thought so then). Since hitting my 30s I have become more aware of road safety and my own mortality. By the time I hit 40 I will probably be a road hog! ;-)

You mean we don't get points for everyone we run over?  Damn the 70's!  I was just trying to make points!

I don't recall saying I was exceptional in any way- or was that bit about someone else?

I drive faster on roads I know in daytime, in good weather. After dark, I'm a snail. No damn night vision and nothing to do about it.

I just crawled home from town. In town it was rain, by the time I got home which is partly up the mountain it was icing up. But I drive a car that can handle nearly anything in order to compensate for road conditions, weather conditions, and other drivers. 4 wheel drive, with turbo charge.

*laugh*  I was once on a bus where there was an irregular beeping noise that seemed to be coming from the driver's cab.  After a while, the person next to me got annoyed and asked what the noise was and I don't know where the inspiration came from but I said that the driver was blind and the beeps told him which way to steer and how fast to go.  This didn't get much of a reaction so I imagined the joke had fallen flat until they got off the bus and gave the driver such a look!

I am not aggressive at all.  If someone signals they want to come in front of me in my lane, I let them.  I usually drive at exactly the speed limit & sometimes a few miles under it.  I use 2 lane roads whenever I can, so people can pass me if they want.  I never tailgate.  I am one of those people that think people should be ticketed for going over 5 miles above the speed limit.   I have always assumed that the speed limit was posted that way because that is the maximum speed that one should safely be able to go on that particuliar stretch of road.   Isn't that why they pay professionals to set the speed limits?  Maybe everyone who travels faster than that have more training than the professionals who set the limits, but somehow I doubt it.

I am a female sub and I will say, I am quite in tune with my car. My car is one of the most important things in my life for many reasons. My Master would be quick to verify that when angry I do take it out on the car by driving ridiculously. However, under normal circumstances, I am an aggressive driver.

Actually, speed limits have little or nothing to do with road safety.   That 55 mph limit was from back in the 70's when the fuel embargoes were in full swing.  Driving more slowly saves fuel!   On a busily travelled street in my town, the speed limit varies from 35 to 45 to 50 back to 35.  It's called a SPEED TRAP, and is designed by those in traffic enforcement, so that they can bring in revenue.
