You see it all the time, and the people are higher anking american citizens,  Who;ve been here 20 or 30 years, like doctors, but yet they hardly speak well enough to communicate with their clients, and It got me to wondering, why aren't there stricter rules in place, about people who wish to be citizens being proficient in the launguage of the country, instead of barely passable?

Ability to be understood and being proficient in a language have nothing to do with each other.  I won't even touch the "higher ranking american citizens" part.

A number of native born citizens can hardly speak the language. Perhaps they should be tested too?

At some point in history....your ancestors didn't speak English either.....

I am told by those who have learned English as a second language that it is quite difficult(and that includes a few who speak a number of different languages)....and by the way, if you will do a little research, a large percentage of American's could not pass the citizenship test that the immigrants do. I have one friend in particular that is from Argentina, but his parents are Italian, he speaks Spanish, Italian, French and English....if you ever had cancer....you'd better hope whoever treats you is near as bright and caring as he is...and I have one hell of a time understand a lot of what he says! But, thank God he is here....

Higher ranking, is perhaps the wrong word, I mean higher up in the professional chain, I'd be ok with say a store clerk who could barely communicate, but I'd not be ok with my doctor who could hardly communicate.

Perhaps bags of marbles should be handed out at the border, a la Eliza Doolittle?

Grinning cheekily, I'm not a doctor, nor do I aspire to be one, or be a high powered career professional, so I am ok

I'd make a better effort of being grammatically correct, if it was  a rule or a law.

So you are offended that a doctor, lawyer, or someone else "high powered" has an accent that you cannot understand?  It is not that they cannot speak the language, it's that you have an issue with communication with them, correct?

Pondering the irony....

By the way, your tag line is misspelled YHMA, as well as the thread title.  Hard to take your complaint seriously with those glaring at me. Just saying.

Aynne * who has a Philipino physician that cannot speak english well at all yet is a brilliant rheumatologist. Yep.

I wouldn't say it's a complaint, but I am very curious.

Well, next time don't assume fellow posters are correct. Philosophical.
