really.

Many languages are and always HAVE been spoken here.  There has never been a law passed stating that a person MUST speak English (let alone fluently or without an accent).

Heh... I refuse to make fun of people with bad accents... because they speak more languages than I do. I worked for a man when I was younger who spoke nine, he was crazy.

As far as doctors go, I could care less what language he speaks, as long as he does a good job.

This is just an assumption, but when this area was settled, I am sure the visiting party, and the native party did a communication system comprising of saying the name of the object they wanted to trade, or communicate about, and lots of "primative" sign language (read: POINTING).  Between what I was taught in elementary school, and what I know about language barriers, that seems sorta kinda in the right direction-ish.

After being around each other, and immersion into each others languages and such, I am sure they learned key phrases and enough to get what was needed to be done, done.

I wonder what would happen if people who have all these questions about thick foreign accents would take a linguistics class, or maybe a history class to learn about how this country morphed into what it is, or perhaps an English class - because if you can't write properly, how is anyone supposed to know what you are really trying to say?  Oh wait, grammar isn't important.

BTW, Michael...  I think I must hug you now.

BTW, am I going to get deported to whatever motherland I may have come from because the other night I said, "Night, Boo" and my Southern came falling out and DaddyBoo thought I said, "Night, Bill?"

YHMA, I think the real question should be "Why arent there more strict protocols on Americans speaking and writing English, since most have been completely immersed in the language since birth?"

Start in your own backyard, and then try to change the world honey.

I don't think the OP was asking the question as a jab against foreigners.  How many of us have called tech support, and we can't understand the guy because his English is so heavily accented?  It's frustrating (be honest...it *is* frustrating).  As someone who speaks a foreign language, myself -- although not well -- I can only say that I admire people who have to learn English, as it is said to be one of the most -- if not THE most -- difficult language to learn.  With all that said, if you are having trouble communicating with your doctor (lawyer, other professional), then I highly recommend finding another one.  I've been to several doctors who speak perfect English, but they had no interest in actually *listening* to me or *communicating* with me; they just wanted to write a prescription, collect my co-pay, and move on to the next patient.  And guess what?  I chose to move on to another doctor...and another...and another...until I finally found one that I could communicate with, in any language.

Ok, yes, foreign tech support drives me up the wall.     THAT is a job that should require English proficiency.

"Foreign" tech support is not usually found on American soil (usually you're connected with someone in India).  So that wouldn't even apply to the situation here.

It might be relevant or important for you to consider how you are coming across to people in this venue. It might be something worth looking at or working on. i'm inclined to believe that You may have some difficulty getting along with co-workers when you finish college.

Actually, I think it's still valid.  An American-based company hires people from India (or wherever) to provide technical support for products that are sold -- mainly -- in the U.S.  The expectation is that the people calling are going to probably speak English, and it's likely that the technical support personnel are required to speak English in order to work at that job.  But to what extent are they required to speak English?  Most of the ones that I've encountered are fluent, but the accent is so heavy that I often can't understand some of what they are saying.  Of course, the tech support people don't hold my health/life in their hands, so their role is diminished, but still...if the callers aren't able to converse with the tech support person, then it's likely that the issue won't be resolved, the customer will be pissed, and the company loses a customer.  So I'd say there is an expected level of proficiency there.

I said it didn't apply because the OP was talking about American citizens.  People living in India, working for a company that outsources its tech support to India, aren't American citizens.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not standing up for them, I'm saying that it doesn't apply... else you could say that anyone who expects to do business with Americans should be required to speak English without a thick accent.

No, Kalista, and as I explained before,  It's not cause I assume they're lazy. If the diet doctors put you on to qualify for the surgury worked, why wouldn't it work in an out of the hospital situation.

What was so different? Is the point of the question.

Why can we work and work and work AND WORK so hard to loose weight and get no where, and then the diets doctors put people on to qualify work?

why aren't there stricter rules in place, about people who wish to be citizens being proficient in the launguage of the country, instead of barely passable?

What exactly is the language of this country?

This question brings to mind the example of cultural imperialism that the British Empire attempted to force on the Welsh, Irish and Scots during the 18th and 19th centuries.   http://www.newinreference.com/reference/cu/Cultural_imperialism.asp

http://www.ethnologue.com/show_country.asp?name=US

This is a list of both living and extinct languages used throughout America. To quote, "The number of languages listed for USA is 238. Of those, 162 are living languages, 3 are second language without mother-tongue speakers, and 73 are extinct."   I'm sure many Native Americans were wondering why these darn foreigners couldn't learn their language(s).

Like it or not, America is a melting pot.

*edited to clean up spelling because I'm just weird like that!

I'm just wondering: what are "higher anking american citizens"?

quote:

ORIGINAL: YourhandMyAss

You see it all the time, and the people are higher anking american citizens,  Who;ve been here 20 or 30 years, like doctors, but yet they hardly speak well enough to communicate with their clients, and It got me to wondering, why aren't there stricter rules in place, about people who wish to be citizens being proficient in the launguage of the country, instead of barely passable?
