What would it need to create a third party in US politics? One that actually stood a chance of holding some power. What kind of thing would be in its manifesto? Is there room in the US political spectrum?

Phil, it would take for people to stop throwing their votes away on Democrats or Republicans who always end up screwing the people up the arse!

you guys know that our independence from England was fought and won by a minority in this country! a revolution could be organized! how about a constitutional convention?? a strong minority can win independence, remember! imagine all 50states voted in Libertarian Governors, imagine that[:D]

Both Obama and McCain voted for the wallstreet money giveaway, right along with Bush. They had no right to do that, and any honorable person would be haunted to the day they died for voting for such. Yet, people still chant Obama is an agent of change, maybe like agent smith. I really hope I'm wrong but so far he's supporting all of the current criminal money give away activities. In short there is no room because we(generic we, as in the national vast majority), see in terms of a boxing match, or WWE match, or Football team. We are not concerned with right, wrong, how, why, but rather, my team go, go, go, and what do I get when we win.

IMO a third party has no chance as long as these career Congresspeople hold the reins. Get rid of the incumbents, and you have a chance. Stop voting for asswipes like McCain, or Kerry, and get NEW blood into the Senate and the House.

I just doubt a third party would get anywhere as far as producing a winning Presidential candidate until it picked up some high-ranking members knee-deep in corruption. That's what's needed to lure powerful lobbyists who have money to throw away in exchange for political favors... So yea, history repeating itself is one way I think it could be described from that point forward.

keep in mind: the media controls public opinion. and those who own the media favor two parties who are superficially different but really quite alike. in all honesty we the people lost it with the creation of the federal reserve system. go sweaty teddy! what a 'grand little war'!

The fact is alternatives get less than 1% of vote. It takes serious work to break "republikrats" monopoly. As country gets deeper into trouble and ruling parties expose their corrupt nature there is a chance for third party to emerge. America is constitutionally libertarian country. Number of registered independents is increasing. At this point there is a need for organizing force. Internet provides an opportunity to raise some money. I see the winning combination being of some moderate libertarian- populist.

Excuse me but not all liberals (or republicans) are blind masses. How insulting, especially from you baby, someone that has links to totally debunked garbage rumor mill websites like that "how obama got the vote" bullshit. I am absolutely willing to wager that my knowledge of politics surpasses anyone that believes that tripe. 3rd party? Not going to happen. Keep blindly following Nader, and Ron Paul, and Bob Barr all you want. Hasn't history shown you that the third party candidates never ever increase in their vote tallys?
