philosophy -> A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 2:41:56 PM)

What would it need to create a third party in US politics? One that actually stood a chance of holding some power. What kind of thing would be in its manifesto? Is there room in the US political spectrum?

UncleNasty -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 4:35:55 PM)

The first requirement would be more coverage for alternative parties in the media.

popeye1250 -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 4:58:55 PM)

Phil, it would take for people to stop throwing their votes away on Democrats or Republicans who always end up screwing the people up the arse!

I ask earnestly: who are 'the people'?

Libertarian - people need freedom and protection from the government which has grown to dangerous size and power levels :(

bestbabync -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 5:22:42 PM)

you guys know that our independence from England was fought and won by a minority in this country!  a revolution could be organized!

how about a constitutional convention??  a strong minority can win independence, remember!   imagine all 50states voted in Libertarian Governors, imagine that[:D]

pahunkboy -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 5:24:26 PM)

a 3rd party is predicted.  as is a break up of the US.

What would it need to create a third party in US politics?
Economic and societal collapse
One that actually stood a chance of holding some power. What kind of thing would be in its manifesto?
That is hard to say, as in a collapse the best and very worst are possible.
Is there room in the US political spectrum?

There's room, however, there is little demand. Most are content with crooks(politicians, and war mongers) acting on behalf of crooks(welfare lovers, both corporate and personal, extreme nationalists,etc.). Both Obama and McCain voted for the wallstreet money giveaway, right along with Bush. They had no right to do that, and any honorable person would be haunted to the day they died for voting for such. Yet, people still chant Obama is an agent of change, maybe like agent smith. I really hope I'm wrong but so far he's supporting all of the current criminal money give away activities.

In short there is no room because we(generic we, as in the national vast majority), see in terms of a boxing match, or WWE match, or Football team. We are not concerned with right, wrong, how, why, but rather, my team go, go, go, and what do I get when we win.

bestbabync -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 5:28:31 PM)

it is possible....if every citizen voted Libertarian in our state elections this country would have a real change!

i believe that when people are fed up with no job, no home and no food, there will be a demand!  alot are predicting a depression...all the Libetarian party needs to do is speak up!

subrob1967 -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 5:34:28 PM)

IMO a third party has no chance as long as these career Congresspeople hold the reins. Get rid of the incumbents, and you have a chance.

Stop voting for asswipes like McCain, or Kerry, and get NEW blood into the Senate and the House.

That's what I call collapse, and at that point I think all the numbness of cold comfort will wear off and then and only then will people be willing to truly try looking at other options. The question is will they select better options, or will they select truly frightening ones.

Either, way, if things go down, we'll all have our chance to determine what the next system will be.

bestbabync -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 5:43:10 PM)

subrob...exactly vote Libertarian, not dem or pub.[:D]

NTUY...a collapse is what many say is going to happen, right?.

E2Sweet -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 5:44:05 PM)

I just doubt a third party would get anywhere as far as producing a winning Presidential candidate until it picked up some high-ranking members knee-deep in corruption. That's what's needed to lure powerful lobbyists who have money to throw away in exchange for political favors... So yea, history repeating itself is one way I think it could be described from that point forward.

rachel529 -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 6:17:58 PM)

keep in mind:  the media controls public opinion.  and those who own the media favor two parties who are superficially different but really quite alike. in all honesty we the people lost it with the creation of the federal reserve system.  go sweaty teddy!  what a 'grand little war'!

awmslave -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 6:30:18 PM)

The fact is alternatives get less than 1% of vote. It takes serious work to break "republikrats" monopoly. As country gets deeper into trouble and ruling parties expose their corrupt nature there is a chance for third party to emerge. America is constitutionally libertarian country. Number of registered independents is increasing. At this point there is a need for organizing force. Internet provides an opportunity to raise some money. I see the winning combination being of some moderate libertarian- populist.

bestbabync -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 6:30:24 PM)

rach & E2Sweet...i am glad not everyone thinks like you girls.

remember the minority i mentioned?  the masses can follow blindly if they want, but not this ole girl!

rachel529 -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 6:34:58 PM)

ah, but the masses... follow they shall, to their ultimate demise.  i need a beer[:)]

Aynne88 -> RE: A third party in US politics (12/15/2008 6:41:59 PM)

Excuse me but not all liberals (or republicans) are blind masses. How insulting, especially from you baby, someone that has links to totally debunked garbage rumor mill websites like that "how obama got the vote" bullshit.

I am absolutely willing to wager that my knowledge of politics surpasses anyone that believes that tripe.
3rd party? Not going to happen. Keep blindly following Nader, and Ron Paul, and Bob Barr all you want.
Hasn't history shown you that the third party candidates never ever increase in their vote tallys?

The next 4 years are going to be so amazing, that even the downer whiny libelous slanderous Obama haters cannot stop change and progress. 1/20/09, history will be made.

Edited just to add Bob Barr is a douchebag.  And a huge hypocrite, with more flip flops than brains. Or morals.
I thought you were all about pro-life baby? You okay with this? Just wondering.

Controversies over Barr's personal conduct
In 1999, during Clinton's impeachment trial, Hustler publisher Larry Flynt offered money to anyone who could provide evidence that a prominent Republican had engaged in an extramarital affair. According to the American Journalism Review,[71] investigators for Flynt said that Barr was "guilty of king-size hypocrisy"; according to a sworn affidavit by Barr's ex-wife Gail, Bob Barr — a longtime outspoken abortion foe had acquiesced in his then-wife having an abortion in 1983 and has indeed paid for it. In accordance with his public offer, Flynt subsequently paid a sum of money to Gail Barr after she had made her sworn affidavit.[14] Barr never publicly disputed the contents of his ex-wife's affidavit. Investigators also reported that Barr invoked a legal privilege during his 1985 divorce proceeding, so he could refuse to answer questions on whether he'd cheated on his second wife with the woman who is now his third."[72]
In the early 1990s, Barr was photographed at a fundraising event licking whipped cream off of a woman.[73] According to the Washington Post "Two people who observed the act say it wasn't exactly a bosom lick but more like a neckline lick, at the sort of event where business and civic leaders perform dares to raise money. 'Not exactly Mr. Effusive', says Matt Towery, the former chairman of Newt Gingrich's political organization, who observed the brief and awkward licking. 'You can hardly get the guy to smile'".[74]
