pahunkboy -> What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 5:10:00 AM)

When I was a kid, (I now regret this), we visited my great uncle and aunt in rural WI.  To a suburban kid, it was dazzling to see how a farm family lived.  Anyhow- we took a tour of his farm, and he got this bright idea, that we all would go "potato picking".  I thought, not me.  No way.  So dad and my brothers and he went about collecting sacks of potatos.

Now I wish I had.

I stocked up on some things at the dollar store yesterday.  I seen that the no name mouthwash went up to $3.00.  How many gargles do you get for $3?    It had been $1.75.   For $0.42 I can get a box of baking soda. I pinch of it in the mouth is just as good, maybe healthier.

Handsoap... the 7 bars of zest were $2.75.  But like for liquid soap, which would be better, dish liquid or shampoo?  Funny they sell more hair conditioner then shampoo.  Anytime there is a package, you pay for it.  We have forgotten what the basics are. So, the dish liquid that contains bleach,,, well duh, why not add a dip of it yourself?  Window cleaner, why is a fancy formula needed?

When I clean a fry pan, I start with crumpled newspaper.  It gets the top layer of the grease out.  WHy waste 4 paper towels, or trash a dish cloth??

What is your plan for the next 3 years, in regard to the recession?

I own a city lot. I plan to expand the vegetables this year.  I will try potatos.  Any other crop I would want to try?

We are in a trend to do things like the old OLD timers did.  What hints do you have?

Ill tell you what.. make this interesting.  I challenge you to save me money.     Take the challenge.    :-)

We are not really "changing" what we buy.  What we have done is cut down on wasting what we buy.

I was amazed when I decided one day to see what we throw out in a week.  Ok, at times I can get anal.  We wasted alot of food, cleaning supplies, and little things you just toss because it's easier to buy a new one then store the one you have.

ScooterTrash -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 5:34:34 AM)

Myself, I likely won't do anything different, I'm a bit disgusting that way. TwiceHappy does all of our shopping however and she uses coupons, lots of coupons. It amazes me how much money she can save, in many cases the store actually pays her to take product home. Now that's what I call savings.

IrishMist -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 6:09:57 AM)

I have had a vegetable garden for almost 5 years now; though the teenager is the one who really takes care of that. We usually end up canning 99% of what is grown . In addition to the vegetables, we also grow our own herbs. I have not bought bottled herbs in almost 20 years, and seeing the cost of them in the store…that’s a good thing. We also have our own strawberry bush, we grow grapes, we have have a walnut tree that we harvest faithfully, and once a month, we go hunting for meat to supplement what we buy at the store.

All in all, at grocery stores, I maybe spend $50 a month on items that we can not make or grow ourselves.

If you want to save a bit on electricity…buy some oil lamps and use them. Not only do they let off a nice glow, but oil is much cheaper than paying for lighting…and they let off a bit of heat.

I don’t use window cleaner…I Use straight vinegar and water, works much better and it’s cheaper. A tablespoon of vinegar in two cups of water and you are good to go.

Just some small things that I have done over the years.

suhlut -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 6:11:03 AM)

well.. my plan is also to cut down on unneccesary items around the house.

I learned recently that vinegar kills germs... and sooo.. I have forced myself to stop purchasing almost all house cleaning supplies.. if I need to kill a germ.. I just shoot and kill em with a bottle of full strength vinegar now. YEAH.. it does smell strong.. but.. its a FOOD safe cleaning agent.. no real need to put poisons on my cupboard shelves anymore.  I still use things like comet.. for cleaning shower..and inside of toilet.. but.. on the outside of toilet.. and in my sinks..and sink handles.. and door handles.. light switches.. anything mirrored... or glass.. I am slowly replacing my cleaners as they run out.. with vinegar instead. and I know its killing germs.. which is much better then what a ton of chemicals they sell will do.

It also works great on glass.. there are recipes online for making hommade cleaners.. like window cleaner..ect.. from vinegar.

I also use it in my laundry... it works great for removing scents.. and sanitizing fabrics. I just add it in with my laundry soaps.. and yes.. I still buy lots of bleach...

So.. on a whole.. my cleaning supply list is cut down bigtime.. no further call for spending a buck or more on a bottle of this..or a bottle of that.. instead I purchase HUGE gallon sized bottles of white and apple cider vinegar.. for aprox 3 bucks.. and use it full strength for most jobs, in a spray bottle.. but also mixed with water for window cleaners..

          Gallon of Vinegar                $3.00
          Can of comet                      $1.00
          Laundry soap (140 oz)        $6.00
          Huge bottle Bleach              $2.00

For personal items.. well I read recently in a magazine that people waste way to much money purchasing matching formulas of hair shampoo and conditioners...

What they recomend that people do, is buy the cheapest shampoos.. since almost all shampoos are basically the same thing.. a bottle of cleaning agents.. so.. instead use the money saved.. to purchase a favorite hair conditioner.

So, thats what I do, I buy a bottle of cheap shampoo.. for a buck.. and then buy a more costly bottle of conditioner.. I have several favorites that work well with my naturally curly hair. I also never rinse out hair conditoner.. I leave it in..and allow my hair to air dry. I use just a small dab.. and smooth it into my curls.. comb it just once.. and let it go.. Leaving the conditoner in my hair.. works much better for defining naturally curly hair..and keeps it much softer. I wouldnt recomend it for those with straight hair though.

With saving the money that I do, I am very particular.. and will splurge on body washes... with anything that mosturizes. If I run out though, reg soap, along with a cheapie bottle of baby oil..the moment I step out from the shower..

I don't mind spending money on anything I can use in my efforts at fighting the aging process.. but I do tend to buy cheap there also, for example I buy a dollar store copy of Oil of olay lotions.. and since I know I saved so much money.. I don't mind the FACT that when I use it.. I use it heavily.. a big dallop on my face nightly.. and I know if I had to buy the full price original, I would be using it sparingly, with less benefits.

IrishMist -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 6:40:17 AM)

If you want to get away from the bleach and the cleanser....invest in some baking soda.

Mix the soda with vinegar and you have a cleanser that works better than anything you can buy in a store...and instead of bleach for whites...baking soda is just as good, and it's cheaper.

LaTigresse -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 7:06:06 AM)

You want to save money, quit buying paper towels and use rags instead.

If you have to clean grease out of a pan before you wash it, you might be eating too much greasy food![:D]

One thing I do when I have to fry something like bacon, instead of letting it solidify I immediately drain it into an old coffee can I keep under the sink. When the can gets full, it goes into the garbage. I use old coffee cans for all sorts of things, especially in the work shop.

As for doing anything different next year versus this year, not really. I've always lived frugally.

stella41b -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 7:11:52 AM)

I'm not worried as I live frugally and simply. I also quit planning when I was in my early thirties.

manxcat -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 7:17:41 AM)

     My grandparents raised me until i was 10.  They recycled even then; everything froem newpapers which my grandfather sold to a dealer, to string form the bakery boxes, which was used to tie up tomato plants.  Then my brother and i moved inwith mom and her new husband.  There was no repairing of things that got broken, they replaced everyting.  I am happy to say that my life has been more like that of my grandparents, and i have been saving money for years.
    Dollar stores and walmart are da bomb for savings.  Dollar Tree is where things really are a dollar.  Totally Awesome is a non-toxic all purpose cleaner, that really works.  At Walmart you can get refills of liquid soap, in a half gallon size for about $4, last time i bought it, may have gone up since.  If you want to go another route, i woud say shampoo, as it cuts grease in your hair, it does elsewhere as well.   I do find that dawn is a better dishwashing liquid, and you need less - i use about 1/4 bottle of that as opposed to cheaper brands, so the cost evens out.
    Turning your heat down, and wearing warmer clothes will keep your fuel and electric bill down.  In this state, (SD) when you have foster kids, you have to keep the temp set no lower than 55 in the dayand 50 at night.  Again, something my grandparents did, although i keep mine a bit higher, as it seems to run more at lower temps, negating savings on electric.  In the summer, keep your air conditioner set at 85, and turn it on when it is still cool from the night.  It will work less and say cooler longer.  Also drink lots of water to keep hydrated, you will feel cooler.  On that note, invest in a good water filter, and fill your own bottles to take along.  There are still no controls on bottled water.  Anyone can fill a fancy bottle with tap water or river water from anywhere and sell it at outrageous prices.  You know it's a rip when Coca cola and Budweiser get in on the act.  In recent years, they have both made as much if not more profit from water, than their other beverages.
   I make my own flavored coffees.  You can get a bottle of raspberry or other syrup - sugar free as well - for the price of one latte, and have at least a donzen for the same price.  I also will buy 2 kinds of coffee, one cheap store and one very good brand, and mix them.  There are a few less expensive brands that are just as good as some high dollar ones as well.  Butternut brand, is certainly tastier than Folgers.
   Genereics, generics, generics.  It took me 4 years to convince my mother that the store brand of ibuprofin had the same exact chemical makeup as Tylenol.  For less than half the price.  This holds true for virtually all over the counter remedies.  Check your prescriptions too.  Those whose patents have expired, will be less expensive in the generic versions.
   Learn to DIY.  Get a basic set of tools.  Again, at Dollar Tree you can get some cheap screwdrivers, etc, for a dollar.  If you are not using them on a carpenters job, they last quite nicely.
   Newspapers are also good for window cleaning and drying, and leave no streaks.  Crumpled newspapers also work well for packing materials - much less than bubble wrap.  If you are moving, go to your post office, most of them have piles of the colored newsprint ads, great for packing the kitchen.
   Buy in bulk when food items are on sale.  With butter at over $3 a pound, i stock up when it goes on sale for $1.89.  Same with snacks and crackers.  Shop around.  Keep a list (in your head if you can) of what items are less expensive at one store, and which are less at others.  Don't wait until you run out of something you use often, to replace it.  Quite often you will run out at in inopportune time, and need somehting from a convenience store, and pay much higher prices.
   Keep your car tuned up, and fluids and tires filled to the correct levels.  Your car will run better and use less gas, as they are designed to run in those conditions.  If your speedometer had a mark at 55 or 65 that is the optimum speed for least gas consumption as well.  It is geared to perform best at that speed.
  Food co-ops and pantries, and scratch and dent for canned good.  They also have scratch and dent places for appliances.  Sooner or later you will scratch that nice new fridge anyway, so get one already scratched and hang a magnet, with your lists.  Or your kids/grandkids art.
  Corn, beans and squash or pumpkins all work in the same area of garden.  The corn provides shade and support for the squash and beans, respectively.  They also provide/need different nutrients so are assisting each other in growing, rather than competing for the same ones.  Rotate the location of your plants from year to year, finding out what is being used one year that can be replaced with something else the next.  Grow your own herbs.  Around here a half ounce package of herbs runs anywhere from $2.79 to over $4.  By planting 2 or 3, even using them every day, you will still have enough to dry for winter.  Actually you can plant or move them inside for winter, in pots.  For that matter, you can propogate many house plants, and at the end of the summer, many garden centers will put very nice planters on sale.  A pretty house plant makes a great gift, and having several around is soothing and helps replenish your oxygen.
  Lastly, buy clothing on sale.  Or at Goodwill, the Salvation Army, etc.  I have very few items purchased at full price.  I have gotten silk blouses and dresses for $1-$5, in perfect condition.  Linen too. My 2 best deals were a leather coat for $10, that needed a pocket stitched, and finding $45 in the pocket of a pair of cords i was looking at.  I also found the perfect bedroom lamp for $6.
   Oops one more thing - yard sales.  Need i say more?

I also will use coffee grounds to clean grease out of a pan.  Baking soda on pans, cleaning the sink, it has many uses.
When I go to recycling, I grab the small shopping bags.  I use them to pack the garage... like, man I step on the garbage, I will stand in the can.     Collection  costs $3.50 a bag and is going up, some sort of "fuel charge".  If I do it right, I can cram 2 bags into one.  Right now the one neighbor allows me to use her garbage.  I wait tho, till the last minute. I dont want to loose that prividge.

BlackPhx -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 8:21:01 AM)

If water wasn't so expensive where we live I would grow a majority of my vegetables. However..in answer to one of your questions:

Buy the dish washing liquid in the largest economy bottle you can, then break it down into refillable bottles. Not only is it useful for clothing, but you CAN wash your hair and your clothes with it, also good for cleaning tubs and sinks.. With bleach is good but not necessary, nor is antibacterial which actually makes bacteria immune. Both Dawn Basic and Ivory DW Liquids are good at cutting grease and food..and gentle on hands as well as hair and clothing. Tin foil makes a good scrubber for anything other than teflon coated products. I still prefer my All, fabric Softner and Shampoos, all of which I buy at the wholesale club in larger sizes.

I hit the Wholesale Club for meats and cut down into individual portions and dis sizes..whole pork loin, who eye round etc. Cheaper than the market unless they are running buy ones get ones..then I will stock up there as well and I always keep my freezer packed full..the frozen meat keeps the electric draw down by keeping each other cold.

Coupons are my friend and I print many offline rather than buy the Sunday news. Sadly no place doubles them here, but I can still combine them with in store sales ( buy 1 get one or 10 for 10 is a joy when combined with as many coupons as I can print) and generally drop my bill by 50$ or more. If there is a vegetable sale e.g. corn etc..I stock up and freeze the prepped food. I love my vacuum sealer.

Vacuum every other day instead of daily, sweep the other days..do complete circuits where possible when I have to go out instead of short trips, unless I am walking. Mop once a week with bleach instead of fancy floor preps and use bleach (cheaper than Tilex) on shower walls, etc. Comet for counters and stove cleaning. Vinegar to clean Microwave and oven.

Spend for the good sheets, best you can afford, they will last longer, same for towels. Blankets instead of heating, layer on during the day. Only the light you need, not the whole house. Maste and I upgraded our windows and patio door to Low E Hi Impact Glass and electric use has dropped 25% with the interior temp hovering around 70-80 no matter what the outside is. We also weatherstripped the doors. Tiled the living room and kitchen (stays cooler in Florida).

And I Freecycle.. If I no longer need it..someone else might and vice versa.

The only thing we have done for now is invest in the radiant heaters.  So far the heater has not had to be on once in the entire house.
We do have 2 heaters now and it was an initial investment.  About 350 a heater...but the past few days the regular temp has been -15 so far.  Currently it is -2 outside and with the wind chill it has been down to -35 already.

That and moving the greenhouse into the house for the winter.  That way all heat we lose, we're using indoors instead.

I don't have a plan. I hate planning exercises. Sometimes I think to myself 'if you had a plan maybe you'd be a millionaire by now.' but then I think to myself 'no fuck-it, I have no whiteboard or marker pens for the drawing of giant pie charts and stuff and it's too cold and dark for a trip to WHSmiths to get them.'

pahunkboy -> RE: What is your "plan" ? ~ ~ ! (12/17/2008 9:19:07 AM)

today I am PATHETIC. I never listen to me for very long.  I just had to look at the markets.  argh.

Supposedly I am busy putting the front bedroom together.   heat rises...being that summer is hot, I sleep downstairs. Well Im set in my ways..but time to go upstairs.

doing so will allow me to set the heat at 52 overnight.  but ya know my bill last year still seemed high.
I love the replies here.

A smart group for sure.    I am terrible with clothes. I trash them all the time.  Paint, stains, dirt.

Boscovs 1st wanted a state bail out.  NOW they also want a county bail out.  in that county 38,000 people live.   I am eyeing my rooftop. that might be a good place to grow stuff.  the 1st floor eves jet out on 3 sides of the house.  The south part could work...  tho not extreme weight I would guess.

Around here none of the stores take internet coupons, not even Walmart.  They all have big signs when you walk in Sorry we no longer accept interent coupons.  We use to use them all the time, but not anymore,

We buy all our meats straight off the farm.  We buy a whole cow and have it package for the freezer, same with pigs.  We get our chickens off a farm also, but they actually cost more, but they are corn feed and not raised in some huge barn with 10,000 other chickens.

For us, one of our big changes was a set of shades for the bedroom to block out light. it keeps it cooler in the summer,though doesnt do much at night. We prefer to sleep in the cold, though, so that works out. And we have a blanket on the couch rather than having the heat blaring.
Our discounts at our respective stores helps a lot too. Generics are fantastic and most stores run major slaes on their brands rather than the name ones.
