-=ON BEING A MASTER=-
To me, the old school definition of Master is still found in the dictionary. Nouns that apply to the title are, teacher, mentor, expert, leader and the classic “Master of the slaves” in the literal sense. All these titles refer to a person in a seat of responsibility over those he is training or ruling. I enjoy all aspects of the verbal application of Master as well. One must “master” themselves before mastering others. So this old school view applies to my outlook. In order to master a slave, you must be financially able to own and support them. In order to rule your slave, must have mastered yourself first. To train your slave you must be an expert or “Master” in the art or subject. To me, being a Master, means you must master your slave.

Ain't no school like the old school. I particularly find the teacher/mentor/expert/leader elements of this definition are very strong in my own views of what a Master should be. Throughout my life I've tried to be all of those at one time or another, sometimes successfully, others not. Confidence is a big part of bringing it all together, and true confidence comes from knowing you have everything dialed. For those with honor, there is no faking this.

I'm curious about how people view "having mastered oneself"...

What does that mean, exactly - how does one know that one has mastered themselves?

I've heard someone mention being in control of one's emotions as a trait, but to me that simply boils down to something like, "one should have a reasonably stable personality".

I do think that would be an important qualification. But what else can be said about the personal qualities that might define a master?

RS mentions being an expert in a subject before you can teach it. This causes me some concerned thought because, though I am competent in several areas, I would not consider myself a master in any of them.

For instance, with carpentry - I'm looking right now at a room I remodelled, an addition I made, through the window at things I've built. They are reasonably soundly made, but I would not consider myself a master carpenter.

.....Can there be the "General Studies" Master?!

I have been in the SF bay area BDSM scene for over 14 years now.  I have been too all of the clubs and I know just about everyone.  So I would think that I can speak to this question very well.

First off, I wouldn’t trust anyone online.  The internet is FULL of fantasies with little reality.  Do your self a favor and meet people in real life before you make any determinations about them.

Next, being a master is not learned or developed.  It is just who you are.  If you meet a guy and he seems arrogant, controlling, demanding, opinionated, and cruel.  You have met a real master.

A real master isn’t going to talk a lot.  He expects you to know what he wants and what he needs.  If you don’t perform.  He will let you know.

A real master doesn’t call himself one.  Some like me don’t even like the word.  I would watch out for guys that insist on being called master, wolf or any combination of the two.

A real master will get what he wants even if he has to take it.

A real master will be a natural leader.  You will find him leading clubs or groups.  Or like myself leading a biker gang.  By the way a lot of masters are also bikers.

Most of all a master is only happy when he is in control.  Not just of his slave but his entire world.  If you want to pick one out of a crowd look for the guy that has his sit together.  A master isn’t going to be in a dead end job or not have money to do what he wants.  A master isn’t going to be living with his parents or friends.  he will have a home and a lifestyle that he controls.

Good luck in your search.

It's merely a word...what matters is the connection it implies.Like love( what the original quote was  from the Matrix movie) it is different for everyone.

I was recently reading a thread that had the following response to a poor sub with a broken heart due to being mistreated by her "Master".  This reply got me thinking and I decided to start this new topic for us new "Subs" starting out in our relationships with our new Masters, or those looking for a Master.

Here is the reply

Some very good "words  of wisdom" for you here. Don't take anyone who calls Himself a "Dominant" or "Master"as such until He has shown you that He IS indeed such a One! Don't give up on yourself, your needs are just that,  you will find the One you seek, tho, it is said,"you have to kiss a lot of frogs, before you find your Prince"!
I would suggest you alter your current Collarme profile to reflect your new status; free and looking, and take more time this time around. The Lifestyle can be a most rewarding one, when you find the right "One". I wish you well in your search!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My question is this, how do you know if someone is a "True Master"?
The more detailed you are the better.

Thank you in advance,

Vanessa Cherry

Vanessa,

I will leave this alone rather than enrage some. I will say this however, I all my time on the path, I have only allowed one submissive to call me" Master" and she really earned that right!

You know he is a real master if he makes you tick. It is 1) about chemistry 2) experience and 3) how he affects you mentally, physically, psychologically (again chemistry).

O.K....dangerous question...lol
So what is the difference then with a vanilla boyfriend and a Master? (besides the toys he has)
Lots of things mentioned can be found outside the lifestyle.
Would for example a vanilla manager give as much pleasure as a Master?

In the mundane world a Master is usually the Master of a vessel, a School Master (very good at giving pleasure if your a masochist lad, when he wields a cane), holds a Masters Degree in one discipline or another, he is The Master of The Hunt (fox hunting), a Horse Master in some stables or he is the head (Master) of a home or house (rarely used except in upper class English Homes

In the World of Kink he is usually a Male Dominant who owns a slave or three. he has earned his spurs within a Peer group such as the traditional Leather men or he could be the Head (Master) of a House or Home (more often in the Victorian Lifestyle which is a traditional honorific for such a man)

A master is a mere title meant to associate one with a position that they hold. Typically said person will have control over a certain group, or responsibility. To take an example from IronBear, a master of the hunt is typically in charge of preparing and carrying out a hunt, or hunting, done for a lord or lady or suitable other person of power. He then coordinates those below him to get the job done. In my conclusion to looking over the various uses of the word, it is my opinion that the term master can be applied to a person who is either in control over a certain person/s or object/s, responsibilities, etc, OR a person who has firmly grasped a certain concept/s.
