So maybe i am living in a fantasy world, or maybe I am just blessed but no actually because the attacks that I have faced are not with guns or knives but with words. You are most likely to be attacked by someone you know, not accousted by a stranger with a gun.

I've never lived in England and can't offer anything except statistics I looked up about the country, but I also think that the American issue of gun control is one you have to be an American to fully understand for a number of reasons.

I would also say that most people do things because they have a reason and people you know are most likely to have a reason to attack you, but that doesn't play out or dismiss the reasons strangers have of money or rape.

quote:

The thing is if someone wants to kill you they dont need a gun.

All the more reason to have a gun. They are the ultimate equalizer. They are the one weapon that completely discounts physical strength and size in a fight.

quote:

I agree you cant ban something in mass usage, here its never been ok to have a gun unless you are going hunting. Its not as much of a problem here. Maybe if I moved to the US I would suddenly have an urge to own a gun.

I'm more than happy to allow you the personal choice to not own a gun if that is what you desire.

quote:

You see I may be lucky maybe thats it but I have never been violently attacked by anyone ever, but thats not about my class or where I live because my lovable but gobby sister is always in fights. I just think so often we look at statistics against the fact that we all have some responsibility in it. But then we never really look at the statistics properly either. Who is the most afraid of violent crime? Women and the older generation. Who are the least likely victims of violent crime? Women and the older generation.

That just goes back to what I said before about gun's being the equalizer.

The vulnerability of women and older people to violent crime is one of the main reasons I believe people should be able to have them.

Curious minds would like to know if anyone posting here has actually had a gun pulled on them or being shot?
If so do you carry a gun yourself?

You'd have to give examples of these 'unthinkable atrocities' that have occurred from not having guns for me to answer that.

Just as ONE example:  Read a little about "The Rape of Nanking."

(Not to mention the disarming of the Jews as one of the first steps toward the holocaust).

On the other hand, read Orwell's "Homage to Cataluna" or read the "St.
Crispin's Day Speech" from Henry V (Shakespeare).  The primary right (and need) for the common citizen to bear arms was not
about defending against crime (although it can certainly come in handy
in that regard too).

In the grand scheme of things, we'll all be gone in a hundred years -- no matter what.  But when a man goes down shooting, in defense of his children or his wife or his elderly mother, instead of standing by, watching helplessly in horror -- there's got to be more dignity and nobility for our (often violent) little existence in the cosmos.

And for those (for whom I have respect and affection) who say that there is no chance of the common man defending himself against "the government" (our own government, or invaders) anyway -- that fact is called into question by what's been going on in Iraq for the last several years.  If our government (or any) was so effective,  thus making it  futile to fight against them, that "war" would have been over in three days.

I know that, after a century of relative comfort, we tend to think we are outside the course of hsitory (I've often felt that myself) -- but we are not.

Applause.

More applause. People don't want to carry, don't. I am a woman that grew up in a military house. I have been in two situations that one for certain, a .38 s&w made it a story that I can now laugh about. Don't tell me why I don't need a gun. I know how to use them, and I don't need to quote stats or pro NRA garbage either to justify it. I am a liberal, but I am not a victim.  I will never not have at least one loaded handgun anywhere that I am living.

Well then it's a really good thing you live there and I live here. I like the fact that I can own a gun and protect myself. There are some right prats in the world.

And I cant think of a time in mine, my family or my friends lives where they needed a gun to protect themselves, what is it that you are protecting yourself against?

I have asked this question in the past and have never recieved an answer that made sense. In my life time I have travelled around much of the world and have never been in the position to feel threatened enough to wish I had a gun.

MadRabbit -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 10:20:16 AM)

One of the contradictions I see in these threads is on hand, people argue that guns need to be banned because they contribute to gun violence.

Then it gets argued that we don't need to own guns because the incidents where one has had a gun pulled on them or shot is incredibly rare.

So if there is no need to own guns because gun crime incidents are so rare, then there should be no reason to ban them, because (obviously) gun violence is not an issue with all the guns that we have.

I have had a gun held to my head for over an hour by a drunken, pissed off neighbor.  I used to own a gun.  I don't any longer.  I sold it because the gun was a .380 Llama and frankly, the slide action on it was too stiff, therefore making it essentially useless to me in the event of needing to use it.

(edited to correct the caliber)

        Doesn't matter, Rabbit.  These are arguments intended to appeal strictly to pathos.  Logic and consistency have no place in the discussion, for those opposed to gun ownership.  All that matters is that guns are baaa-aad.

Well today is your lucky day  then susie. I was home alone, two men kicked in my front door, thinking I was out of town with my (now) ex-spouse. They were criminals that worked for one of the subcontractors that we used for a concrete job. High as hell on smoking coke all night apparently, and wanted to rob us. The ex had talked about going to Canada on a motorcyle trip and the idiots assumed I went to. Wrong. I woke up on the couch in nothing but panties and a t-shirt to see two whacked out thugs ranascking my kitchen and headed into the living room where I was. I sat up, grabbed the .38 from under the couch cushion and said what the fuck do you think you are doing. They bolted. I called the useless cops, they found them an hour later in the parking lot of a local restaurant, high, with guns, knives, cash and drugs. So yeah, I am way glad I had a gun. By the way, this happened in a yuppie little upscale town on the coast of Maine. So it is anywhere and everywhere.

I've never argued that. I argue the world is a dangerous and making it safer takes personal sacrifice that most aren’t willing to make.

Like you said it comes down to what is reasonable risk, one hundred other things in life could kill you so why protect yourself in ways that will make society less safe?

To answer your question : Yes, I've had a gun pulled on me - by a family member.  While said family member Missed, he DID take a shot at me.  Yes, I carry a gun.  Yes, I hold a Concealed Carry permit.  Yes, since the incident that happened when I got shot at - I have made Damned Certain that any time I'm going to Knowingly potentially be in the same place at the same time (a distinct possibility up until a month ago, when I moved dad back in with me from the nursing home) - I was armed, it was loaded, safety was off, and I could easily draw and fire if my life was threatened.

I also carry concealed when I go do my show rounds, business wise.  I'm typically carrying cash, and would rather shoot someone than be mugged as I'm making a cash drop into the night deposit at my bank.

missturbation -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 10:33:07 AM)

Use of a gun to murder someone is rare. Use of a gun in a robbery where it is used as more of a threat is not as rare if i remember rightly from statistics i pulled quite a while ago.
A lot of people talk about having a gun to protect their homestead. It is rare someone who breaks into your home with the intent of killing you will bring a gun. That is unless they are a woman, women favour guns because they do not need brute strength to kill a person with them. Men favour knives and strangulation. Now chances you will hear someone break in your home are slim. By the time you have realised there is someone there they will already have their hands round your throat or have stabbed you. Will a gun in this situation save your life? If it is right to hand, loaded and off safety possibly. Would you leave a gun lieing around like that considering the accidents that could happen? I would hope not.

I think the point most people are trying to make is that without guns there would be less gun crime. They would not be getting into the wrong hands as often. It is definately contradictory to say gun crime is rare but having a gun contributes, however i dont think anyone can really argue positively against the fact that by banning them there would be less.

Not trying to be arsey here but were they a licensed gun holder?
See if they were and guns were banned before said incident surely the chances of that incident happening would have been less unless they obtained a gun illegally.

Aynne88 -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 10:39:24 AM)

Hm. I answered your question, no comment? You posted stats?

Misst, I do keep my guns loaded, available and ready. I have no um's in my home, or anywhere for that matter, and I can have my hands on it in seconds. Usually safety off. Oh well, I am not much for SSC either if that matters.[;)]

See problem there is you could argue either way.
Gun crime is higher in USA so we need to carry guns.
Or look at that higher gun crime in USA, banning them would bring it down.

No point doing that because the mentality is: this only proves we need guns.
Interesting more people kill themselves though.

No risk to anyone but yourself, fair play to ya.
However if stabbed or being strangled id debate your ability to lay your hand on your gun.

Aynne88 -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 10:43:21 AM)

I agree Greedy. I have a .44 luger and I hate it. I am by far a fan of revolvers, I can handle that so much easier, and that frigging slide action on the .44 sucks, it is too hard for me easily manipulate, the revolver to me is a better peice for a woman.

Roselaure -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 10:44:14 AM)

I don't carry a gun.  I have owned guns on various occasions, although I don't own one now. I don't care for the way carrying a gun makes me feel.  The constant awareness of it and the great responsiblility.  I don't like the idea of potentially being in a position to kill somebody being in the front of my mind all the time and that's how I feel when I carry a gun.  However if i believed it was necessary for my safety I would.

Aynne88 -> RE: Why I Carry A Gun (12/28/2008 10:44:57 AM)

I agree with that misst, but at least I have a chance. Without it, I may as well lie down and wait for it. Not this girl.
