Status: offline 		I'm just sitting here drooling... most concerts at my civic center run $5 to $7.  Course we aren't booking Fleetwood Mac or Nickelback... but still... the profit margins must be outrageous!

When the stadiums don't get full ... that's when ticket prices will stop climbing.  I don't think it'll happen, tho - seems ike everyone's gotten used to paying outrageous prices.  I would, if I really wanted to see a show.  For instance, Tom Petty - I'd pay a lot of cash for his concert.  But I just turned down the chance to see Nickelback for $85.

Status: offline 		This is something that has only gotten worse over the years, and will probably only continue to do so.  One factor is greed on the part of the venues and promoters....remember when all the arena-type venues were general admission, and your ticket was just as good as anyone else's?  If you wanted to get a good seat, you got there way early and waited in line.  Then you have the insurance companies jacking up rates on the venues for "high risk" events.  Then of course there is ticketbastard.  The best solution to this crap is to simply boycott the arena-type venues.....but the problem is that there will always be people (suckers) who will pay hundreds of dollars for a ticket (are there really that many rich people in North America?  or are there really that many people who save for a whole year to be able to to go one show?  this is one of life's eternal mysteries!), so no matter how many people refuse to be extorted by high ticket prices, it is doubtful that this situation will ever change.  My own personal solution is to simply go to fewer and fewer shows in arena-type venues, and more and more to shows in small clubs.  There is plenty of great talent out there, both mainstream and in the underground, playing in smaller, more intimate venues....I've seen countless shows where I've paid $10 at the door, $3 for a beer, and been able to stand right up next to the stage - and this includes plenty of nationally and internationally known artists.  These smaller club venues are where every band starts out....in 1990, I saw the third show Smashing Pumpkins ever played, they were opening for a local band I liked....I didn't like them, but 6 months later they were all over the radio and playing arenas....I still have the flyer for that show.  I constantly play underground music for friends, and always get remarks like "these guys are great!  why isn't this band all over the radio?  this is better than the crap they keep playing on the radio, where did you ever hear of this band?"  There's lots of great talent floating around out there in the underground and playing the small clubs....there are plenty of alternatives to the overpriced arena shows if you do a little research!

Status: offline 		A lot of concerts have become more advanced from a technical standpoint- bigger road crews, pyrotechnics, etc. Those things aren't cheap. Plus as artists get older, theres less of a chance of them doing another tour. I don't see the problem, if you don't want to pay the ticket prices, just don't go.

However you were willing to pay the ticket prices, and I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time :)

Me, I could give a flying fuck about pyrotechnics or super-duper laser shows. Now, back in the day, light shows were cool, but they were part of the experience; they weren't gratuitous.

I've seen a lot of shows over the years, and, as far as I'm concerned, the best sound quality of any show I ever saw was the Dead's "Wall of Sound" put together by the Bear. I've exchanged e-mails not long ago with Bear; he lives in Australia now, and makes some very cool jewelry. He's also almost stone-cold deaf. 10 tabs of Purple Haze if you know who Bear is. 

Not long after that, everyone started miking their amps and sending the signal thru the PA. What a sucky sound. No spatoal localization. No dynamics. No individual tonal control. Just shitty sound. But, hey, for people who think iPods are hi-fidelity, it's good enough.

Are they close to the front/center?Are all floor seats 5 hondo a pair?

The Beacon is my favorite venue in NYC.Very classy and warm.

Status: offline 		Older bands like Aprin Wine or gulps Helix, etc are free now and do local bars.  I dig the oldies, never get out to see them but if I did I would see the old ones that are dying off for free locally before giving newer bands my money.

I agree.  Some of the best concerts I've ever seen were pared down affairs, focused on the music.  The last concert I saw was the Stones at the Garden in NYC.  My friend won front row tix from a radio station.  We debated going because it was a very cold night during the week, but man ... it was the best show I've ever seen.  And it was very simple - I understand their outdoors shows are massive things, but beyond a screen and some moving stage, it was just great music.  And to see Keith Richards, that close up, looking almost embalmed, was priceless!  lol

Because they know people like you will pay it. It's supply and demand. As long as they can increase the price of the supply and still have people wait in line to pay that price the price will continue to go up until people no long wait in line.

Status: offline 		the problem could be,  gasp  NYC.

next time check to see if they are in NE PA.  it is a trend for NJ folks to go to PA concerts,etc, as it isnt rip off prices----YET.  State College is a nice venue.  $500 - you could get a cheap motel and have a weekend out of it.

other then in college events- I havent been to any concerts.  Loud doesnt impress me.  Somehow at party type of events I get stuck near the drunk.

so a park and the outdoors is more my thing.

Status: offline 		I was just having this same conversation the other day with someone at work. How tickets have gone sky high. "Back in my day" I paid 10.50 to see the Eagles, and 12.50 to see Def Leopard, Eddie Money, J Geils Band, and Bob Seger all together in one show. Fast forward 29 yrs and recently paid 87.50 each to see the Eagles here in Minneapolis. That got me 3 rows from the top of the arena.

I understand the cost of doing business is going up, but come on, be easy on our wallets, will ya?

The seats are within the first 20 rows and from what I can see from ebay anything on the floor is gonna go for about 4-500 per seat soon.    I have no regrets.  The Beacon is awesome.  Now if the would just start doing concerts at Waterloo again...
