I would guess that for the many who read without posting, it's more about the time and effort involved than not feeling welcome. You can learn a lot just by reading other people's posts. Plus, a lot of people may not feel very adept at writing in general. Kind of like a fear of public speaking, although not quite as extreme. However, the flames directed at some subs probably discourage a lot of people also. Ask the "wrong question", or in the wrong way, have misspelled words or poor grammar, and you're likely to get attacked.

Sometimes I want to write things or ask questions. The reason that I don't is because sometimes the responses are mean.

There will b a group who will read it like that, but even read the answer of lilah33 after you.
