Status: offline 		One is not going to be able to stop all instances of bird strikes, fair enough they can be minimised at air ports by the use of hawks and near where I used to live, they had the parrot patrol, which was basically a car driving around broadcasting the sound of a dying bird through loud halers, that was thought to keep birds away, though they did have an eagle owl too.

The problem is places away from airports, birds will be where birds will be and where they are likely to be, we just have to rely on the observation and skill of the flight crew to avoid these situations. If shit should happen despite all precautions, shit happens we are not yet in control of every eventuality and we have to accept we do not, cannot control everything.

We just have to rely on those charged with our safety when we travel, as likely it is, they are better trained and equipped to deal with shit happens situations, as has been demonstrated with the Hudson River hard landing.

No, they can.  Very few birds fall under protected status.

The "basics" are simple.  What you propose is not practical, which is why other methods have been employed.   Yet you are trying to make an ideological argument based on supposition without any facts being presented.

I've heard of this.  Never quite made sense to me.  Birds of prey don't flock, but even a single large bird can do a lot of damage to an aircraft.  Seems like trading one problem for another.

Status: offline 		I think they are trained hawks... the guys take them out on their arm with the little hawk hoods and such. Easy enough to call them back when a plane is taking off I guess

I fly model airplanes and I can tell you from first hand experience that hawks fly very differently than birds which fly in a flock.  I'll also lay very long odds that hawks are rarely the birds that get involved in aircraft strikes- they're very maneuvrable, fast, and have excellent awareness of what's around them.  Bear in mind that a jet airliner near the ground is probably doing closer to 200 mph than 500 mph- hence, speed and maneuvrability of the bird do count.  Geese tend to fly by follow the leader and are much slower to react to their environs.

In terms of smaller aircraft- yah, a single bird can ruin your whole day but all airliners have more than one engine- so a bird strike in one engine doesn't leave you flying a very heavy glider.  (although jet airliners actually have a pretty good glide ratio- think its typically around 20:1.  (20 ft forward per foot down)

I heard that on NPR last night on the way home when they were discussing this. Apparently birds of prey are also a problem, not just the flocking birds, per that same report.

In Canada, I believe the moose cause quite a few traffic deaths. Or at least, those that do get hit.

Well, not really, if you think about it. At a large city airport, there are planes taking off as frequently as every 30 or 45 seconds. They're running pretty much constantly during most daylight hours.

When planes are flying at lower altitudes they will continue to run the risk of collision with single or entire flocks of birds.  The danger is not just at the runaway and as Rhi mentioned, the amount of screening covering the engines can only be so thick and dense before it becomes counter-productive.
 
The pilot and crew did a fantastic job and the passengers worked well together from all accounts so far.  As another poster mentioned the crash happened in a major metro area during daylight with plenty of emergency personnel able to respond quickly.
 
What could have been a terrible disaster has been for the most part, averted. 
A couple of reports mention a passenger or two with broken legs but it they are all very fortunate to be alive.
