The only experience I have ever had with eating fish was my moms cooking, and I Realize she's not the greatest cook so the sampling of fish I hated when she forced me to eat it as a child, isn't always such an accurate image of fish.

The main problem with fish, I have is most the kind she cooks stinks, the house smells horrible for weeks, it tastes about as fishy as it stinks, and they look absolutely gross, when they come from the fish department.

I do know I don't really like shrimp based on having it a few times, unless it's been fried, like coconut fried prawns.

I have heard salmon isn't the best fish to try if you're biased against the taste of fish, but other than the opinions of the waiters at Red lobster, advising that if you don't like fish you probably wouldn't like the salmon, I know nothing of fish.

I like most fish, when the cook is awesome. But you may want to start with Salmon, Tuna steak, Swordfish steak, yummmmm! Now I want some. Go to a good restaurant and order fish from the menu, and you should be able to change your mind. M

I love fish, but I wonder why you'd want to eat fish if you don't like the taste of it. My very fave fishes are turbot (with hollandaise sauce) and monkfish (cooked with leeks, with baby new potatoes) but I don't even know if you can get those here in the Land of the Steak Anyway... one of the less fishy fishes is tuna. Try a seared tuna steak.

Avoid the raw oysters *slurrrrrrrrrrrrp*.

Actually a restaurant was the one who got me reconsidering lol. Red Lobster has some awesome sounding dishes I am so tempted to try.  I am waffling between yes try, no don't try, but I wanna try, but what if I don't like it?

They're pretty pricey and you'd essentially have wasted the money it cost to order them if you don't like the food.  One dish is 26.50 The other is 17 dollars, and one is 20  dollars, and Those prices would be for my dish only.

I've talked about it with DAddy, since he likes sea food and he'd be willing to order one of the dishes I am curious about and let me munch some of it.

That way if I don't like it, no big deal nothing lost, but if I DO like it I am not going to worry about weather to order it or not next time. Ill go strait for it.

I don't like spicy foods, though, even if it's mildly spicy, but IF we go before we order I will ask for a sample of their sweet and spicy sauce.

Caribbean Lobster and Shrimp, featuring a wood-grilled rock lobster tail and jumbo shrimp with a sweet and spicy glaze.

Maui Luau Shrimp
and Salmon Wood-grilled fresh salmon and skewered jumbo shrimp, brushed with our sweet and spicy glaze and served over wild rice pilaf with grilled pineapple.

Hawaiian Isles Shrimp and Salmon Crispy jumbo coconut shrimp, paired with spicy pineapple-glazed fresh salmon topped with toasted macadamia nuts and coconut. Served with wild rice pilaf and piƱa colada sauce. 18.99

Well, like I said, because the only experience I have ever had with fish, was from someone who admittedly isn't the best cook ever. She could of botched the dish quite horribly, * As is likely since she does botch even easy dishes horribly, ie over cooking and such*

OR the fish that was bought could of not been very fresh.

It is also supposed to be quite healthy for you.

Now I realise the stuff at a dinner won't be so healthy with all the sugar and stuff, * which is where I'd try the fish out at first*

but regularly, yes fish is healthy.

I am trying to over come certain biases towards foods, foods I have admittedly only ever experienced from someone who can be a very poor cook sometimes.

And I am trying to, try new things and have new experiences. And who knows, maybe after trying these things from someone who knows what the hell they're doing and is an experinced cook and a good one, I may still not like them. Or I could.

Freshwater catfish would be a good choice and of course, trout, preferably from a very cold stream. If you ever pass through Omaha, stop at Joe Tess's (assuming it is still there) and get a fish sandwich. It's actualy fish served with a piece of bread, not really a sandwich, but it is great. The scary thing is, it is carp...but don't believe what you hear, carp fixed right is the bomb. As for seafood, I can't imagine not liking shrimp, but if you don't, then lobster or crab legs are probably out. You might want to try some whiting or flounder, they don't have that serious fishy smell/taste.

Tuna or salmon, if you are trying them at home. That way you can do whatever you want with them to try to find a way you like them.

If you like smoked flavor, smoked salmon is yum and so are smoked oysters, FYI.

If in a restuarant, get a seafood platter or a sampler, so you have smaller amounts of a bunch of different things to try. Is it just fish, or do you also not like crab, lobster, oysters, etc?

Scooter beat me to it.
Whiting is a very mild fish, and awesome when dipped in seasoned flour and fried.

Yes, I am picky, there's more to eating than just cramming it down your gullet.

If I don't like it and don't enjoy eating it I refuse to eat it . Why eat shit you won't enjoy eating.

Ah! You saw that commercial too? I saw it the other day. I am s-o-o-o-o going there.

I empathize with you. I'm not really big on fish, either. That's one of things I don't miss about living in Hawaii; every grocery store has a sushi section, and the smell hits you the minute you walk in the door. I did my grocery shopping very quickly. But speaking as one non-fish-lover to another, I think the wood-grilled rock lobster would be a great start. I eat lobster all the time, even though I don't care for fish. It's not going to taste fishy at all, especially being roasted over wood coals.

But if you want to try genuine fish-fish that doesn't taste too fishy, trout is usually a very good choice. Better yet, if you can get it out in California, look for walleye fillets. Very tasty. I'm no expert on fish, because I don't eat it often, but in my experience most  freshwater fish is not as strong-tasting as deep sea fishies. Even the milder ocean fish, such as tuna and swordfish steaks, are a little too fishish for me, but trout and walleye - or northern  pike, if you don't mind the bones - are delicious if prepared properly. Good luck, and remember, lemon juice can be your best friend.

The only experince with crab I've had are crab cakes from a frozen bag you thaw and cook, and they were gross.

HOWEVER! Like I said I realize the one way I've had them and found them to be icky and wanting, is not the only or even the best way of having them!

Lobster, I think I've had a bite or two before, from a plate when I went with someone else, if I remember right, it's not very bold at all very very mild.

Never had oysters before but I hear they're quite slimy in texture, and slimy food would put me off eating it lol.

I have had fried calamari before, and I've had eel before.

The eel was ok the fried calamari wasn't horrible, but it lacked pretty much taste at all and was a t iny chewie.

Whitefish, like cod, monkfish, etc are great poached.  Just make a baking pan with about 2 inches of water, 4 or so lemon slices, and a bay leaf.  Heat it in the oven until hot, then add the fish.  The lemon and bay leaf take away the fishy taste.  Serve with salsa, tomato also hides the fishy taste.  Its healthy and really delicious, just dont over cook it.
I am not a fish fan and I love fish cooked this way.

Let me warn you that finned fish are very easy to cook wrong.  I simply pan grill fish in a salad dressing marinade and hope like hell I'll cook it right.

I like trout.  But tilapia is good as well.

Try tuna, it's very mild.  It's not even fishy when it's raw.

And if you're trying to get fish down for the health benefits, but find that you can't stomach it, a close second is taking the omega-3 fish oil pills.

I don't know if canned tuna fish, IE bumble bee tuna, is even remotely close to fish, after what it goes through to be canned and arrive at our local grocery, but I do love canned tuna fish.
