I have heard if the fish have cloudy or milky eyes, they're not fresh. Other than that, how do you tell if store bought fishies are fresh?

You ask to smell the fish you're interested in buying.......i just posted that.  Go to the seafood area of the meat section, almost every grocery store these days has a fish/seafood section, and when you see a fish you might want to try, ask the butcher to put that piece of fish on a piece of butcher paper and ask to smell it.  It it smells fishy, it's not fresh.  If you're interested in buying a whole fish, do the same thing.  If it smells fishy, it's not fresh.

All butchers these days will be familiar with this system......i've never once had a butcher look at me with the WTF look when i ask to smell the fish i want to buy.....they all know that this is how you tell is fish is fresh.

Do you happen to have a recipe?

A mild white fish is where to start. Don't fry it, bake it in a light tomato broth. That way no smell of fish. Serve with pasta.

That is a very very good tip about smelling it, I can probably ask Daddy to do that too, since he likes fish and knows what a good fresh fish should smell like, I'd imagain!

I am looking for fish markets and stuff around town here in Sacramento, I figure maybe fish markets, I'll have better luck than in a grocery store* maybe I don't know about these things though*

Salmon has very little fishy taste if it's fresh.  It's nasty if it's sat around for a while.  Go to the fish area of the meat department and if they have salmon, ask the butcher to put a piece of it on some butcher paper and then take it from him and smell it.  If it smells like fish, it's not fresh.  And don't be embarrassed to ask to smell it.....

Good luck with your fish eating adventure......just try the shark first.....

I like you!

You are brave to want to try something which in the past has turned your stomach. And wise, to know that tastes change as you get older, and you may now like (or even love) something that you previously despised.

Explore, and have FUN!

1. get a wok

5. check out foil packet cooking on the Reynold's Wrap site
The "packaged stuff" you "mostly eat" is full of salt and sugar. Stop it.

Yup, I do know how it is. It's not like I can see you smiling, or catch the tone of the voice.

WyldHrt, The packaged shit, is something we're trying to change. It's a process. I don't like to cook, I am I admit, very very lazy, and he keeps saying he would like to learn to cook, but then never acts upon his statement when he has the chance to cook. I realize that being lazy is something I need to change, for my own health and happiness. I'm just not sure how to go about changing years of ingrained lazyness. I guess you just get up and start doing it.

Yeah, pretty much. Since he says he wants to learn to cook, why not take a cooking class together? You can learn basic techniques, and shortcuts to make cooking easier.

Another suggestion: www.allrecipes.com and www.recipezaar.com. You can search recipes by ingredients, and also exclude ingredients. Find some things that interest you and look easy to make, and give them a try.

I've done that before , it was fun. I looked up recipes for chicken, since chicken is pretty cheap and easily had around here.

Only I didn't listen to when it said to buy chicken legs, I bought breasts instead, and it was just as yummy finger licking good.

Cooking classes would be fun, he doesn't have much free time, to do extra circular things like that, but we could do it at home. Just pick a recipe and do it together in the kitchen.

I am already considering getting some fish and cooking them at home.

I agree with Scooter and wyldhrt--start with a firmer white fish like whiting--My recommendation is start at a place like Long John Silvers, they use one that is nice white and firm and you can get it with a piece of chicken or shrimp--their batter is awesome and its not expensive. While salmon sounds good as you can make it with a variety of things---it can come too dry and you'll be put off.  Try as I suggested at a LJS OR start with an order of "fish and chips"--that is white fish and battered and a good way to nibble.

I am not very fond of most fish.  I absolutely love grilled tilapia.  There is a restaurant near here that has me hooked.  The only other fish I have really found that I can stand is fried catfish.  I guess that's just my southern roots showing.

Sorry I just had to jumpthrough on this one. Fish for someone who won't eat fish ?

The answer is pork or beef.

i absolutely love tilapia.. i cook it while still frozen.. wrap each piece in its own lil packet of tin foil, and place a pat of butter on each before closing the foil. Follow cooking instructions on pack, but it cooks relatively fast.

i serve it with sliced lemons ( to squeeze the juice over the fish), or if not lemons, i used bottled lemon juice. A nice sprinkling of salt.. (sea salt is best)..mmmm!

you might also start by grilling it, that way the smell is outside and the sensory is associated with other nice things grilled.
