I didn't know which forum to post about this on. None seemed a perfect fit.
Does it bother anyone else that our profiles and journals show up in google searches? I don't have that problem with other sites, but on this site it's a problem. My coworkers can find my profile and blogs by searching my username.(which can't be changed.)
Is there some way to change this behavior or rename my profile without losing all my correspondence, favorites, history etc?

If you put it out there, someone can always find it, heck with an address, I can play earthwatch and watch your house 24/7--not being unsympathetic, but...

No. If you are concerned about coworkers searching from your user name, then it's a matter of being selective on what you write.

Cat, I just have to use Google Earth and it'll show exactly where my house is, I was able to zoom in enough to see the the small shed that's in the backyard!

Why do your coworkers have your username? Are you using the same username for everything? I have 3 e mail accounts. A personal one, a business one and one for play. They all have different user names so they stay seperate. My online banking and bill pay has a 4th username but is attached to my personal e mail account. It also helps to not put your picture openly on the internet if you feel you need privacy. All it takes is a bored coworker or family member surfing the net to see you. I only send my picture to select people.

I think you can solve your problem with a little work. Make a new profile and send all your contacts a little note telling them you have "moved" Copy and paste your profile and journals (if you want them) and put them on your new profile. I would take my picture down to if privacy is a real issue for you.

I own a business that takes me into private homes so I have to remain super vanilla and professional to the public. I totally understand what your worried about. On two occasions I have come face to face with people I have seen on internet sites and I can't tell you how uncomfortable it may have been had they known who I was.

It kinda bothered me too when i realized it showed on a Google search...but then i thought about it....anyone who knows this nick already knows of my interest in the lifestyle.
I suppose my daughter could Google me if she wanted too...but then she already knows her Mom is a bit off the norm....just not exactly how much <laugh>

How do your coworkers know your CM user name?

I use one username for everything everywhere. It's never been a problem before. On the 65 sites I've been a member of only this one and myspace show up on google searches.  It wouldn't be hard for the collarme admins to remove robot searches from the site. I simply wish they would, or else would enable profile name changes so I could avoid the problem without losing everything.

It would be even easier for them to assume the adult members of the site know how to use the Internet responsibly ;)

Handsolo: Like I said, I've never run into this problem on any of the 65 other sites I've been a member of.  This is an easy problem to fix and it's a shame that they haven't.
Otterswim: It's true, it wasn't in the first 6 pages. They must've been determined, but they found it.

Yes, I googled my name just a couple days ago, and there was my CollarMe profile, on page one all the way up on top.

Another good reason not to post photos, in my opinion.

Can't find myself with Google damnit. Why didn't I call myself SharonStone I'd be able to find myself then.

If people used their actual first names they'd never be able to find themselves with Google. Also you can try calling yourself Porn1 or HaveABreakHaveAKitkat.

That would be the problem, then.

Sounds like a good idea to me especially when you consider that every time you buy a new something or other you instantly become a member of another new community.

A default username and email does make things simple, Rae, but keeping more fringe activities in a separate file makes sense too.  I don't want to accidentally click 'fwd all' and send dungeon event notices to grandma.

Choose a common name for your profile here, common names, there are hundreds of the same, so yes, it will show up in a google search, but it might be on page76 or something. Someone has to be really bored to find a common name specific to someone they know.

Easily do this:

1) Hide your profile on this site.

2) Don't post a picture.

Voila! Done.

If your intent is to find a partner on this site, then you have to shut your profile down with your present name, and choose another name.

Privacy is not a hard thing to protect. Anonymity is easy.

No there is no way other than starting a new profile.  CM isn't here to 'police' you.  If you aren't out then use the net responsibly.  Be responsible for yourself and do not lay it on the sites doorstep.

Just a kind of caution though. Right now, by posting this you have left yourself way open to all kinds of abuse because you have basically said that you aren't out, that this name is you everywhere on the net and you have your photograph up.  If something happens and someone decided to out you or whatever they decided to try and do - you are now free game.  And no one is at 'fault' except you if they did.
