For those of you here that use the Tarot, I have but one question, how does it work ?

I have read various articles on the subject ranging from hocus pocus to psychology, and am aware certain psychotherapists use it in their practice, so what is it a game of chance playing on superstition, or something other ?

How does any superstition work: you play on peoples hopes and fears.
 
Card 1=Death
Card 2 =Death
Card 3 =Death
 
Oh that ain't so bad it just means you are going to experience a lot of renewal.[:D]

Basically Tarot is a method of divination by interpreting the symbolism of the cards in a specific layout  and the relationship the card has in conjunction with the surrounding cards. A person who honestly reads Tarot uses instinct or intuition to interpret the cards and how the cards relate to the person seeking. Tarot cards date back to the late 14th century.
   Granted many people debase tarot and believe that it's a bunch of bull, yet many do seriously study various types of Tarot cards. It's tough when the general population's attitude is wrongly influenced by Hollywood's concept of Tarot being evil and a tool of evil. But it's human nature to debase and prejudge what they don't understand.

A good Tarot practionner will channel the fluid from the cards in order to 'see' whatever they can about the person they are reading the cards for. It works, if you want it to.

If you're interested in learning about Tarot from a beginners point of view,I'd recommend the Tarot Classic and The Stuart Kaplan book by the same name.It should give you enough history and insight as well as knowledge on definitions and spreads in common use.Most decks you get a book with only focus on the deck that comes with them......which may not suit you......Kaplan is acknowleged for his collection of different decks and having studied them.
If you're thinking of getting some cards,I'll happily advise on other decks too.

As to if it works or not, it's not easy to find complete strangers to read then come back to for a "score" I prefer to encourage people to be open minded rather than live by it.

I'm curious what makes a set of Tarot cards Tarot cards do they need to be bathed in holy water or can I interpret a standard set of playing cards the same way and find out who is going to suffer the jack of spades or has a bit of eight of diamonds in their future?

Nearly. The reason a Tarot deck shouldn't be passed around is because it needs an accumulation of its owner's fluid - it's a little bit like a wok, or a teapot. If you add other people's energies, the power within the cards gets diluted :-) .

    I use a different methodolgy when I delve into divination, Aneirin, but I think the principles are the same.  They are a symbolic conduit between the conscious mind, and the consciousness we don't yet comprehend.

Some people do use "ordinary" playing cards. On the main land in Europe you can buy playing cards that are used for card games which have 78 cards and can therefore be used the same way as "Tarot"

You'd be better off drawing an ace of spades than the jack with your eight of diamonds though ;)

Actually, you take 13 vestal virgins, add in a pinch of graveyard dirt, 6 eye of newt and a dash of pure  vampire blood. Mix all together, recite incantations from the Egyptian Book of the Dead and passages from The Satanic Bible in a full moon in May. Oh ya....offer your soul to Anubis and Baal

       If you were to really embrace the meanings you assign to the cards, and not just be screwing around, then yes.  Lots of things can be used for divination.

One of the games I've seen played with the 78 card "playing cards" could be likened to happy families at a twist

The only thing that interests me as such is the fact someone wrote words on a card and someone else has to interpret if those words are good or bad in the context of the person's life. Everyone has their own interpretation of what this word combination could mean so who are we to trust? Is there a standard that we are following here or are different people allowed to read the same thing from different sets of cards? I.e. the first person decided to write death on a card and someone else is supposed to know why that card exists at all? He could have equally written pink panther or various other things.

Understand that the Death card in any Tarot deck and Oracle deck does not automatically mean a physical death of a person. When a person make a drastic change in their way of living, in essence, that can be viewed as a death because that person is now living a new way of life. The same way a person may walk away from a spiritual belief system and embrace a new one. That is a spiritual death in that they moved into a complete new set of beliefs.

A medium will interpret the cards. The cards have no intrinsic value. Therein lies the secret of divination, Raechard, you cynic, you :-) .

Well I can "interpret" numerous decks and am familiar with several spreads , but I'm not a medium and I've never met one (if you get my drift)
