Now I have been a contributing memeber of this forum for a fair old while now. I enjoy reading your sometimes incomprehensibile arguments about politics but something is really confusing to me. So often I see the s word (socialism) spat out of peoples mouths in regards to Obama. Is this a residue of the fear of reds under the bed? I also wonder how many people know what socialism is? I think saying Obama is a socialist is pushing it to be honest but also why would it be so bad if he were? These are genuine questions, maybe socialism means something differant over there. It would be nice if this thread was kept understandable so not too many cultural references

Well, you need to know about the Red Scare and McCarthyism.  Here is a good starting point -

McCarthy?  No, many call that era a modern day witch hunt.

What in the fuck?

What is it that Americans think socialists do exactly? Canada's a socialist country, and our economy is in the best shape of any of the G7 countries, our standard of living is higher, etc, why are you guys so terrified?

Socialism does not equal communism and comparing socialists to nazis is just fucking retarded.

edit- sorry, anger induced typos. Also, I'm not saying America needs to be a socialist country, whatever works for you guys, but seriously, there are worst things than being a socialist.

I'm pretty sure that he predated the term "fucktard", so it may not be legal to use it as a descriptive for him.  If so it's a terrible shame.

yours

Which is my point. Socialism isnt communism. There seems to be a real misunderstanding of the word. And comparison to Nazi's really emphasises that.

I think that having a discussion about the differences between socialism and communism would be worthwhile.  In many posts here the two terms seem to be confounded.

Ummm....Nazi means "National Socialist". But I guess they neglected to teach you that in whatever public school you went too. They probably taught you Nazism was a product of the right and I have to guess you haven't gotten past that piece of propaganda yet either.

Most Americans think Socialism means "goodies for free". Some of us recognize it as government sponsored larceny that starts small but has also been the basis for every tyrannical mass murdering government that has existed since the settling of the Tigris-Euphrates river valley. The Nazi's were one of those notable governments but were not by a long shot the most prolific murderers, which is quite something to say after at least 8 million dead.

Socialism, communism, fascism are all leftist statist ideologies that reduce individuals to being property of the state. Their differences are minor and any state that engages in any of them has the potential to degenerate into goose stepping mass murderers. All of your superior sounding European or Candian or Whatever know-it-alls should think about that before congratulating the country with the largest most reliable nuclear arsenal on earth about it's recent turn to the left in the past election.

Yes I know what the anagram stands for HOWEVER I dont think it means what you think it does. It actually is the far right (and my state school education and degree in history taught me that)

Uh...what does that have to do with anything? Yeah, the Nazi party was known as the National Socialist German Workers' party, but that doesn't change the fact that they were a fascist goverment.

Fascism also does not equal socialism. I'm going to take a wild guess and say you've never lived in another country...or attended any post secondary institutions.

Which wars are being discussed goes in cycles around here.  Stick around long enough and you get a special patch that says,

The S word, and it's seemingly asssociated C word and the past N word, words of the past, possibly indications of how things can go wrong, but does that mean they are wrong, I think not. Things have been tried in the past, some have gone well and some have gone disasterously wrong, it of course depends on a person looking in's point of view, but as we, humanity is I suppose evolving, we have our history, look at it, see the problems and learn from them. If we can't learn from our history, it is simple, we are not evolving.

I am according to the Political Compass a social libertarian, what in reality that means I have not a clue, nor really do I care, but I do have ideas of how I see things, what feels right to me, socialism is I guess in there somewhere, so to me, socialism is part of me, it is just the way I am naturally, I can accept what is natural.
