Coffee snob here.  Peets Major Dickason's, whole beans, ground in my kitchen just before brewing.  Yum.  Very Yum.

Hate Dunkn (brown water)...and Tim Hortons?  One sip and I choked and threw it out.   Sorry, that stuff was bad...really bad!  Starbucks is bitter.  Someone once recommended Cafe du Monde so I ordered some.  It was OK, but not as good as Peets.  I'm spoiled, what can I say.  On lazy mornings I'll use my coffee press, otherwise I'll brew it in the pot.  If there's no  half & half, I'll go without coffee.

When I was married, the husband didn't want me drinking coffee (no reason other than a control thing).  So the very day I moved out, I bought a new coffee pot and this majorly huge mug that says CAFFEINATED on it.  It is my special mug.  [:)]  Yum...coffee is very, very good.

I drink coffee all day and all night long.  I love coffee.  But I do have a question.  Has any one who frequents Starbucks find their coffee a little bitter?  It also give me heart burn.  The only coffee that does that.  Does anyone else experience that?

I don't go to Starbucks but I do get heartburn from regular coffee sometimes. Try the newer, low acid, coffees that are now available.

I have a Saeco coffee machine. Whole beans go into the top, and delicious coffee comes out. Perfect!
Mostly I use a espresso roast from a local roaster, and drink it as a classical milkcoffee. On occasion, I add a bit of flavour with caramel, nut or vanilla syrup.
I like a splash of Baileys from time to time, and a bit of rum works well if you add some chocolate syrup into the mix.

When it comes to tea, I have a fondness for some herbal blends. There is a special one from the Netherlands called "Staremunt", I bring back heaps of it every time I go there.
And homemade iced tea in the summer. With a bit of raw sugar and lemon juice. Delicious.

The mug with the punk style Tinkerbell is mine, as is the one with the old style Minnie Mouse. Hands off!

Starbucks burns their beans.  It's how they achieve a consistent flavor in a national chain.  The best coffees I ever buy come from independent little shacks set up in a parking lot or vacant lot.  Of course, the worst coffee's I have ever bought have also come from those places.

It's all about how the beans get treated.

That is a good tip, La T.  I will have to look for some lower-acid
coffee blends.  I prefer lattes and cappuccinos with a biscuit or scone.  Drinking coffee without having some food at the same time will give me heart burn.

My favorite here in the Chicago area is Whole Foods 365 Brand French Roasted Whole Bean Coffee with half & half or whipping cream.  I grind it fresh every pot.  I never really cared for the regular canned french roasts that are out, but the 365 one is great. For a special treat now & again, I will pull out the espresso maker, but I usually drink 3 cups every morning.  It takes too long to try to make that much when I am running around the house getting ready for work to try to have it every day.   I really do miss the little Seattle area dry through coffee shacks on every corner.   I don't get why Dunkin Donut coffee is on that list.  To me it tastes like brown water.

Several people have mentioned Whole Foods stores.  Is that a natural food supermarket chain?

My favorite Coffee is STARBUCK YUKON.

MissIsis -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/6/2009 7:43:24 AM)

Yes, Whole Foods Market is a natural & organic grocery store chain in the USA & in the UK.  Not only is the coffee grown without antibiotics or hormones, the coffee is all fair trade coffee, which means the farmers are paid fairly for all the work that goes into growing & making the coffee.  The store has a reputation for being expensive, but I find if I stick to sales & store brands, very often, what they have can be competitively priced for similar products sold in conventional stores.  Whole Foods partners with many of the farmers to teach them better farming practices, & they work with independent certification companies to make sure the products they sell meet certain standards.

Intelligensia coffee is really good too.  My favorite just happens to be the 365 brand that I mentioned.

Has anyone tried the alternative coffees, like Dandelion coffee or the WW2 'ersatz' made from acorns ?

LaTigresse -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/7/2009 5:41:41 AM)

No, the craziest I am going to get is my coffee chickory combo.

Another thing I thought of this morning as I was making more..........cold brewing makes a coffee MUCH less acidic. I also enjoy the flavour more.

Aneirin -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/7/2009 8:41:12 AM)

I have done the Dandelion root one available from health food stores, that is definately not to my taste, besides, no caffeine and I have also made a 'ersatz' type stuff from roasted acorns, that one is a little too bitter despite the roasting destroying most of the acids, but again no caffeine.

I hear you in the US had an 'ersatz' during WW2, a stuff called Postum, even a coffee flavoured version, which would be fine except coffee isn't coffee without the caffeine.

So I seek the caffeine with the flavour, of those that have answered Ven's thread, who here drinks decaffeinated coffee, or are you all addicted to caffeine ?

LaTigresse -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/7/2009 8:55:24 AM)

Oddly enough the caffeine does nothing for me. I can honestly have a couple espressos after dinner and go to bed and sleep like a baby. Neither does it help me wake me up in the morning, even though I joke about it. I get up, dressed, and head outside to run dogs and feed or move horses, before I have any coffee. By the time I get to the coffee, I am wide awake.

I also only have one cafe au lait a day now because my acid sensitive stomach would rebel with more than two. Regular black coffee or espresso require an antacid tablet. I drink the caffeinated type for two reasons, I really can taste the difference and, I don't like the methods most companies use to decaffeinate. With no reason to avoid the caffeine, why bother.

Aneirin -> RE: Coffee Reviews, taste test 2008 winners (2/7/2009 9:04:05 AM)

Maybe I'm odd or hoplessly addicted, but I can sleep better if I have a coffee before sleep. Last night I seem to remember having woke up, made a coffee, munched some hobnobs and went back to sleep, to wake up this morning wondering why I had a bed full of crumbs, in fact it was the crumbs that woke me up this morning.
