hardbodysub -> Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 8:43:25 PM)

Who else finds Valentine's Day a pain in the ass, an obligation rather than an opportunity, the antithesis of romance? Just because the Hallmark Company wanted to make a bundle of money, we're obligated to "be romantic" and do something special on the specific day that they chose.

I enjoy romance, surprises, thoughtful gifts, all of that, but HATE when someone else tells me when or how I'm supposed to do it. The existence of Valentine's Day is a bane to real romance, IMO. Takes all the fun out of it when it's EXPECTED.

Who else out there is a member of this politically incorrect club? Please don't tell me that I'm the only one who hates this contrived holiday!

You didn't get any Valentines in home room I'm guessing.  It's just one day a year, man.  I'm sure you love your mother a lot; do you hate Mother's Day for "obligating" you to be a thoughtful son?

aravain -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 8:53:00 PM)

*raises hand*

Though, I will be honest. It *WAS* nice to have a specific day to look forward to that I could *expect* romance. I don't usually like tons of surprises, and while I like spontaneous romance... it was nice having a time that it was understood that, even with everything going on, we would have at least a few hours just to be romantic (cuddles, copious 'I love yous,' gifts, a dinner, *cough*virginitylosing*cough*).

It's the one time where 'making time' for romance doesn't feel unnatural.

But I *DO* get annoyed at the over-commercialization, the fact that some people (sometimes have to) accept that it's the only day for romance in the whole year, etc. etc.

i hate Valentine's Day with a passion, for the very reasons you do.  It is nothing more than Madison Avenue's way of getting us back to shopping after Xmas.  They need a reason to get into our wallets again and this is what they came up with......blah......[:'(].....

I'ts commercial, it's without any redeeming romance value, and it's for those who are brain-dead.

Any relationship i've been in i've always requested that We not celebrate Valentine's Day.  i have asked that if it's flowers Hy wants to give me, if it's a nice dinner Hy wants to take me out to, if hy wants to give me chocolates, then that can be done just as easily on March 19, or January 28, or any other day of the year besides February 14th.  It takes no imagination whatsoever to do those things when the marketing firms of every flower shop and card producer in the Universe is blaring out their pitches on TV, radio and the print media.

Sorry, it's just not a Holiday i'm into....bah...humbug.....

Bad guess.

It's just a rant looking for kindred spirits, man.

You presume a lot. How do you know I even knew my mother?

I started this thread so I wouldn't rain on the parades of the Valentine's Day lovers' threads in the other forums. You could follow the example.

Now I'm guessing that you don't have a sense of humor.  [8|]

Meh, my birthday falls around V-day, so it usually gets meshed together anyway. [:D]

Vendaval -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 9:31:14 PM)

The true irony of St. Valentine's Day is that the origin comes from a martyred Catholic saint.

"Valentine was a holy priest in Rome, who, with St. Marius and his family, assisted the martyrs in the persecution under Claudius II. He was apprehended, and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, who, on finding all his promises to make him renounce his faith in effectual, commended him to be beaten with clubs, and afterwards, to be beheaded, which was executed on February 14, about the year 270."

I appreciate your input, and I understand the idea of a special day allowing you to make time for romance. To me, that one little thing is about all it's got going for it.

Back when I was in high school and college, I liked VD (Valentine's Day, not venereal disease, although I think the congruence is appropriate). I gradually appreciated it less and less. The fact that it's all a Hallmark money-making ploy is one reason. The other is that it just feels unnatural when it's contrived like VD is. I don't need or want someone to decide when, why, or how, to be romantic.

aravain -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 9:33:13 PM)

It's a day for slaughter, in general...

just look at how many nasty nasty things have happened on Valentine's Day in the past (Valentine's Day Massacre, just to name one).

I'm not sure it's that ironic. VD still seems like being beaten with clubs.[:D]

hermione83 -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 9:43:46 PM)

Whoa, newsflash, its politically INCORRECT not to celebrate valentine's? I thought it was the other way around. It could be insulting and painful to those who have lose someone, are divorced, single, lovelorn, etc etc. Incredibly common to feel pain, jealousy, and loneliness on this day if you're without. And it's a day people like to rub in other's faces what they've got. Not because they love each other. Why else do my female coworkers get flowers and candies sent to them with ridiculously sappy cards from people at work? If it was sincere and between them, it wouldn't have been sent to work. It'd be given personally. It's a ridiculously politically incorrect day in general. I think it's a hateful day. And I got lot's of valentine's in school - but it was ridiculous and horrible then. You could buy differnet colored roses from the principal's office, meaning friendship or more, and some people would do secret admirer's some true, some hateful.. some not anonymous.. all kinds of weird stuff, and the girls who got them were put on pedastals.. those who didn't have boyfriend/girlfriends were made to feel awkward... and people scrambled to get one. And this started in like.. kindergarten.. it's ridiculous... and people who were more popular or richer would get more valentine's from friends too.. sad sad little day it is..

aravain -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 9:49:31 PM)

In elementary school we were required to bring one for everyone in the class. Not bringing any would get us in as much trouble as being short. They also all had to be hand-signed with the other person's name hand-written >:(

In middle school... it was a jewish middle school. LoL, no celebrating it there.

High School was different. Like I said, it wasn't as big as Sweetest Day, but my sophomore year they actually banned people sending things (flowers and teddies) to the office to be distributed during the day. After that you had to bring it to them in person. Some groups sold long-stem carnations (roses weren't allowed for some reason. Maybe we would hurt ourselves with the thorns?) with a little water-cap for $2 a pop as a fund-raiser. My best friend used to eat them.

hardbodysub,

If you have visions of VD/STI's whilst being beaten you have the wrong person beating you.  There is an art to a good whipping.  [sm=sm.gif]

Edited to add -  After posting this I realized you meant VD=Valentine's Day not venereal diseases, but what the hell.

I used the term sarcastically. I called dissing VD to be politically incorrect, because you experience a backlash whenever you express your negative opinion about VD. Whatever your reasons for not liking VD, and there are plenty of legitimate ones, if you express them, people will call you a spoilsport, unromantic, suggest that you didn't get any valentine cards in your box at school (see earlier replies in this thread), etc.

youngsubgeoff -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 9:59:23 PM)

valentines day is worthless to me. I celebrated it last year in a Black Dahlia Murder mosh pit, trying to get into the pants of this chick that punched out this big bald dude. This year, Im probably gonna be spending it with a few beers and a hockey game on the TV.

aravain -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 10:07:15 PM)

This'll be my first valentines day alone in 3 years.

I'm excited to se how it'll turn out [:'(]

hermione83 -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/7/2009 10:11:49 PM)

I've always been alone on V-day.. actually my first boyfriend I met before v-day in high school and he didn't even give me anything..  grr. :P

Aneirin -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/8/2009 3:04:39 AM)

Valentine's Day, I always hated it and saw it as yet another buy fest executed by those that wish to pry money from us. Like why celebrate something you can show every day, is Valentine's Day  the excuse  for someone to shower a partner with gifts of love, sorry, but I find Valentine's Day very cynical.

The other thing of course as I tend to ignore comercialdom, I always used to either forget it, or worry for days prior that I was going to forget it or if I had remembered, worry what I was going to buy for my love, as it seems we are constantly being pushed into buying, as though it is expected.

Then of course is the things one buys, they must be of a satisfying standard, else the worry, what message are you sending to your love, is this just something to mark the occaision, or have you really thought about it and is that thought the measure of your love for someone, or be perceived that way.

Whatever Valentine's Day was in the past, when it was first conceived, how different is it from now, and yes from Ven's input, why celebrate a person's execution, even more reason to ignore the day if at all possible.

colouredin -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/8/2009 3:19:33 AM)

FR

See I dont like it either but I know when I spout all the 'oh its the corperations' crap its not really. Its because I am always single on valantines and everyone else always isnt. I remember at uni all my housemates but me and one other were in relationships they all got flowers and because they felt sorry for her the pooled together and bought her some too, where was mine? Eh?

Im sorry but the commercialism argument simply cant be used, I hear it all the time and then tink, yeah but wait you just stopped telling me about your christmas presents. [8|]

Accept the real reason people. Its a day to make single people feel even worse about being single
