It's a book, a fairytale. And I am, as always, curious as to why you want to know how others feel about it - you know without asking there are others who feel the way you do, and other others who feel like I do. So why ask a question you already know the answer to?

It shows you like other people's fantasies. I personally like rolling my own, and then making them happen, I don't need storytellers for that.

Anyway, enjoy. There is more where that came from, especially if you have a vivid imagination

Status: offline 		I hadn't read the book, but a few years after I first "found myself" I order the movie.   I really didn't like it, basically because it was so schmaltzy, 70's sex wanna be film, and I just couldn't get into the music and whole time period.   Which I know none of that is the point, but the story was kind of lame.  After it was over I was thinking the concept was a good thing to work with, and how I wished someone could make a more up to date version, with a wee bit of reality thrown in.

I much rather stick to reading the Beauty Trilogy...much better story telling in my opinion

Status: offline 		I thought it was very poorly written.  I wanted to know more.  Why did she accept this?  Out of love for her boyfriend?  Seems a far stretch for me to her being dropped off and then made into a slave.  What was burning inside her to drive her to live this life?  I remember a scene where her boyfriend played with another girl in front of her (light touching) and within a few pargraphs, O went from devastated to seeing such a thing to being A-ok with it. 

I think O and the Beauty trilogy are fine places to start the thought process about D/s or BDSM, but I wouldn't take them as a bible, so to speak.

I agree. I've always had a problem with people who take fiction and try to live their lives by it. Doesn't matter if it's something fairly literary like "O" or 27 shitty pulp novels by John Norman. You lose grip with reality, and you end up going down a road that just leads to alienation, and tragic results.

Status: offline 		I can't say I have ever been a fan of French Literature, and "O" is no exception.  I might have to read it again to remember the ending as, to be fair, I'd pretty much given up by the time she was in the house in the country after having stayed with the woman in her house.

I refused to watch the film.

Status: offline 		I think they are porn and that is not really an entrance to sexuality, just an expression of it. Sine both are totally misleading and wildly fantastic, they tend to lead people away or make them try to go down paths that don't exist and feel a failure or that they are bad or fake or all sorts of bad things.

I really think having some sense that they are the far end of the BDSM porn continuum, like faster than light engines in sci-fi, would be helpful to sooo many people and stop a lot of heart break and false expectations

i didn't ask for the sole purpose of feeling accepted, or because i like O/other P/peoples fantasies, i asked because i was curious about O/other P/people's interpretations of the book. In no means does it change my opinion of the book, and it doesn't change my fantasies. i'm sorry if You got that opinion but You are completely wrong in Your assumption of me.

Status: offline 		Wow i didn't expect so many responses, i wish to thank E/everyone who read and responded to it. i love the diversity, and the difference in P/people's opinions. Diversity is what makes the days less boring. i didn't view the book as something to look forward to, or something to place heavily into a "real world" possibility. It was simply something to read and enjoy. i by no means wish to someday be O. i juts have a habit of finding myself lost in a book while reading it.

Status: offline 		When I read it as a young one I thought it was hot, except for the ending which sucked royally.  It was fair masturbatory reading.  I read it again in my 20's.  It pissed me off.  Yes she was open to being an object, but DANG.. seemed more like she had no mind at all beyond fulfilling someone elses temporary need.  At the end she was tossed like the tissue that people wiped their waste upon.
I am sub, and no part of me could relate to being that.
I read it again at 40.  I thought Stephen might be a nice guy to chain to a wall and hang weights and hooks from.
And the other guy?  Clearly not someone I would ever consider dominant.

Status: offline 		I was conflicted by this book.  I liked some of the scenes and the idea or chateau Roissy, but I could never understand how “O” allowed herself to be used the way she was.  Her submission came from some incomprehensible love for Rene, not a desire to be a slave.  Rene’s actions proved that he cared little for her and was basically Sir Stephen’s lackey.  Sir Stephen at least was an honest sadist who treated O as the slave she had become.  The book ended as it had to, with O being increasingly objectified and degraded until she had nothing left to give. Sir Stephen loses interest in her, she can’t bear living without him, and is allowed to kill herself (suppressed ending).  Maybe I’m missing something, but even if I ignore the absurdity of O’s undying love, I still find the emotional cruelty and callousness distasteful.

Status: offline 		I must have read this book at least 25 times before I turned 16. It fueled my adolescent dreaming and encouraged me to seek out dark maso encounters rather than vanilla love for many years. I haven't looked at a copy for 40 years now but I remember it fondly as sexual poetry.
My other 'gateway' book was the Undergrowth of Literature by Gillian Freeman. Both of these served to set me firmly on the deviant path.

Status: offline 		I first read it as a teen and it was of great interest. However while it was risque for the time Family Circle, which was not a magazine devoted to purient interest had a girl in a short dress (which at the time was also a bit shocking) kneeling with wrists bound titled 'The Story of O Dress' as a cover shot some time in the period 1964-1968. Probably 65-67. So while it was considered porn, it was also well known in the main stream.

My wife/slave, who did think of herself as property - a slave girl in the Oriental not Western sense or perhaps Gorean, did like it and we did see the movie together when it came out in 76. That anyway is the year we saw it. It ran at either a main stream theater or an art house. I recall it as more of a romance and no depictions only inference of either sex or whippings. Some bondage is shown. However she and I were both looking for hard depictions and were disappointed in that regard. Story of Johanna is far better in that regard there being a fair bit of uproar when the leading actress said the whipping scenes were real.

Status: offline 		I feel "O" was very overrated also, and did not like the portrayal of the Master being so callous.  Now, the beauty series, though very fictional,  stirred up many ...er...um...feelings and desires.

I loved the movie up until the end.  The end really sucks!!!!  I do know that the movie is far fetched in means of the lifestyle...but....it was entertaining to me, because it made me think.  How far would i be willing to go, as a slave, to make my Master happy.  i still do not have an answer to that...but...it made me think.
