It does read smoother in french but it is still written in a less emotional style than most Americans are used to.

Merci, fey.

Good to know.  One day I'll get a copy and see how it compares.

I enjoyed the book and thought it was original (for what it is--it's hardly high literature), but it's not particularly useful as a basis for a real BDSM relationship because it's a fantasy.  It captures certain emotions well, so the closest you could say that it comes to reality is to provide insight into the emotions that will be involved in a real BDSM relationship.  But as a guide, it's useless.

Edited to add: The emotionlessness of the writing, which apparently some people find off-putting, is actually something I APPRECIATED.  Too much commercial writing about BDSM is laden with sentimentality.  The strongest way to talk about emotions is without being emotional.

If Y/you've read it, what was Y/your feelings about it?
slaves/submissives, could you identify with O?
Masters/Mistresses/Dominants, would You treat O as Sir Stephen or Rene did?
How did Y/you feel about the ending?

i just read it and would like to hear how other people felt about it. Personally, i loved it, it was quite the emotional roller coaster as i felt i could identify with O.It was as though i felt every lash, the burning on her backside when she was branded, every time she was used and i cried for her at the end. It was a very intense experience for me, and i want to know if it was just as intense for A/anyone else.
Thank Y/you for taking Y/your time to read this.

De rein cheri. *wink*

Just as a side note... DO NOT suggest this book as your reading assignment in college French 4. Talk about TM-fucking-I from a professor. (or, if yours is really that hot then i guess go for it. Mine looked like Abe Lincoln after living in Vegas and trying to be an Elvis impersonator)

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!   Tu me fais rire!

Dear gary, I cannot even imagine any of my professors, including the one I had for Senior Seminar even cracking L'histoire d'O open, much less talking about anything "sex-shull."  However, one professor did get mad when it was obvious that none of us had done our reading and she said, "No one has any comment on this at all?!!?  Am I the only one who thinks that it's a bit odd that the main character is kissing other nuns in the abbey?"  To which, she received many blank stares as we rifled through the book, trying to find that part.
