I tried the patch a couple years ago and had some really strange dreams as a result. If I remember correctly, that was listed as one of the side effects.

Status: offline 		It's been over ten years and I can honestly say I don't have moments of craving it. I actually cannot believe I ever did smoke, it's so gross to me.

Oh, and I also went cold turkey. I drove everyone around me crazy for awhile with bubblegum, but that didn't last long.

Sadly.. there are lasting effects.. of two fold.. i miss and still crave a ciggy, anytime i smell others smoke, or in my usual trigger moments.. when I tried the patch I had whacked dreams.

Status: offline 		I quit cold turkey....Have told anyone that will listen that I have quit.  This way I will feel like a fucking shit hypocrite if I choose to relapse.

Coffee is not the same.  Jerking off is not the same. The "Jonesing" is getting better, but even right now I catch myself thinking about them smokes.  They were perfect. They were never judgemental.  If I went out for a night and didn't tell them where I was or forgot to bring them along they always welcomed me back. 

They complete me.

Status: offline 		I did it you can too.  Cold turkey about 24 years ago.  Of course it helped that I was having 24/7 morning sickness, so I didn't notice much withdrawal.  And non-smokers are so much more of a joy to kiss.  Seriously

I can see the social reinforcement being a big part of why people have trouble quitting.  If everyone in your social group smokes that is going to make it doubly hard. A few people I know gave up going to bars because their friends would hang out on the patio and the combination habit of alcohol + cigarettes + socializing was just too strong of an attraction.  Is part of the appeal also having something to do with your hands when feeling tense? 
 
(My mom and step-dad both smoked for years and I am asthmatic so never did but am trying to understand the reinforcements).

Status: offline 		I quit about 16 years ago.  I was smoking over 2 packs a day..  Back then I replaced it with an hour or more on the bike every day at the gym.  I envisioned all the crap leaving my lungs with every pump..
Today, I cannot believe I ever, ever let those little fuckers run my life.  It is so incredibly disgusting to me.  I won't stay in a place that allows smoking. I won't ever get involved with anyone who smokes.  It gives me an instant headache too..

It started cuz I was bangin' a filipino ER nurse.  She smoked ciggs and weed like a champ...I asked if there was a bracelet that I could wear that would identify me as being allergic to "her hospital."

Anywhooo, was always one that could have a drink and a smoke.  The filipino pothead is long gone and the ciggs were all that remained of our once unholy alliance.  Now they are gone as well.

See, that always bewilders me.  I had my first cigarette when I was 12; I was a regular smoker by the time I was 14.  Obviously, you don't make the wisest decisions at that age.  I just can't imagine starting when I was 30.  Hell, I can't imagine starting when I was in my 20's.

Status: offline 		LOL, I can remember being a kid, maybe 8 or 10, and taking a note into the grocery store written by my mom telling the cashier that it was okay to sell me the cigarettes.  She just didn't want to get out of the car and go in the store, for whatever reason.  I think I was high school age when I'd buy them for my dad.  I never smoked them, though, I hated that they did.

Those carding laws came along a little later.

Status: offline 		Some stores carded me, some didn't.  My parents smoked too, so I swiped them when I couldn't buy them.  I never had any trouble getting them.  Of course, I think there was a different attitude towards smoking in the late 80's than there is now.

Your parents sent you with a note?    And I can certainly relate to not wanting to buy them for the puff'nstuffs at home.

You were not always carded?  I would have lost my job for that.  A guy I worked with was fined several hundred dollars n a sting opertion for not carding someone who was right around 18.

I was rarely carded Ven.  Before I turned 21, my pals and I would just go from store to store until someone sold us booze.  I don't think we ever had to go to more than 2 stores before we scored.

Status: offline 		My mom has the alzheimers.  We took her from the nursing home to a dinner at a family home. Someone had left a ciggy going in an ashtray on the table beside my mom and they left the room.

My mom picked it up, took a drag.  I said 'OMG MOM, you quit smoking 15 years ago!!'.  she laughed and said 'OMG , no wonder it tasted like shit!!'. lolol what a rollover gutt bustin' laffin day that was.

Back in the day, we had the same thing in Quebec...sent to the corner store with the squeaky red flyer wagon to pick up a 24 and some smokes for me dad with a note.  Old man at the store loaded it on for me, of course. Prolly at the same age as windchymes.

They still allow the beer thing and smokes as far as I know.   But, it just looks bad nowadays lol.  In Ontario they card up to 25-30 if you appear younger. 

edit: also we couldn't afford a full pack as kids either (allowance went to collecting Charlie's Angels gum cards) so be bought a few individually from the store owner.  2 for a nickle or 5 for a dime.

I was in my teens when I started smoking as well. I stole cigarettes from my mom and had my older friends buy them for me. There wasn't such a stigma back then. All the girls were smoking in the restrooms at highschool. It was the cool thing to do back then and as a kid I wantd to be in the in crowd. (Yeah, in six feet under!)

I quit 12 years ago and the thought of a cigarette disgusts me. I quit cold turkey; a massive asthma attack forced me to look at what an idiot I was and not breathing made it easy to quit. I don't miss it one bit. The smell of cigarette smoke nauseates me and if a customer is a heavy smoker I can tell and try to finish with them asap for even the smell from their pores makes me ill.
