Just one month after taking office, President Obama, after long consultation with his wife and daughters, has selected the breed of dog to become the nation's first pet. It was announced that a Portuguese water dog will be sought for this important position.

Polls reveal that 63% of those questioned believed this to be a good choice. 32% considered it to be a poor choice and 5% responded that his choice of a dog from a socialist haven like Portugal was proof that he was out to destroy the American way of life, lead us down the road to communism and pointed out that dog food is full of pork.

Peace, conservative friends....it's a joke!

Because Socks passed at a ripe old age, and the next reporter Barney bites is going to kick him.

Is that necessary, Shake?  I mean, WTF?  It was the White House cat.  It hung out in the West Wing.  When they left, the Presidents personal secretary took it to live with her. Maybe they had bonded?  19 years old is a damn good span for a cat.  I would be thrilled to hear that a cat I had passed to a friend had done so well.

No, the dog buddy didn’t like that cat since day one.  The late 90's had stories of Clinton trying to make peace with the two and failed.  Just Clinton didn’t handle the initial work correctly.
http://www.wftv.com/dirtyrestaurants/18763314/detail.html
Socks had lived with Bill Clinton's secretary, Betty Currie, in Hollywood, Md., since the Clintons left the White House in early 2001. He didn't get along with the Clintons' dog, Buddy, and aggravated the president's allergies.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1998/01/980112062951.htm

Keep Socks And Buddy Apart And Let First Pup Grow Slowly, Cornell Veterinarians Advise Clintons ScienceDaily (Jan. 12, 1998) — ITHACA, N.Y. -- As Buddy, the new First Pup in the White House, becomes more oval and Socks recoils in horror, Cornell University veterinarians have some unsolicited advice for the Clintons: Avoid overfeeding and overexercising Buddy, and give the First Cat a "dog-free zone."
Meanwhile, Katherine A. Houpt, the director of the Cornell Animal Behavior Clinic whose 1993 advice may have eased Socks' transition to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., has been watching the president's dog on television. "Buddy is already pulling on the leash. The owner should learn to gently but firmly control the dog," said Houpt, professor of physiology. "And the dog has to learn not to chase cats." The young Buddy's interest in rapidly moving objects is understandable, said Houpt, a textbook author and expert in animal behavior. Early puppyhood is the best time, she said, to teach a young animal about inappropriate behavior. "What is play for a puppy is torture to a cat, because a large puppy play-fights and enjoys rough-and-tumble games. If a dog gets in the habit of chasing cats, what began as play can become a serious problem," she said. "Many cats and dogs learn to get along fine and even play gentle games together. Others learn to coexist harmoniously but with little interaction."

While in the White House Socks was the coveted principal presidential pet until 1997 when he was “voted out of office” due to the arrival of a dog named Buddy. Socks and Buddy never got along. According to Hillary Rodham Clinton, Socks “despised Buddy from first sight, instantly and forever” and Bill Clinton said that “I did better with the Palestinians and the Israelis… than I’ve done with Socks and Buddy.”

Right.  It isn't like he was busy being President or anything.

Useless fucking hatemongering.  It's going to be as counterproductive in '12 as it was for the Dems leading up to '04.

shake, you are being obnoxious and counter-productive with your singled minded obsession of any views contrary to your own.  And it is dirty sportsmanship to fall into the bickering and personal attacks.  Somehow you have reached whatever number of years without learning basic social graces and that does not serve you well either here or in the real world.

Ugly enough to be adorable, Lynnxz.  I prefer the larger breeds, but I just can't see a mastiff among the White House antiques, much less our current destructor of a lab-shepherd pup.

I hope it becomes a beloved member of their family. (and that when they get it a nice new yard in 4 years, Tony Rezco isn't part of the deal)

Hello Lynnxz,

Yeah, they look something like a standard poodle and the coat can be either wavy or curly.  Have you ever seen one?  It is a breed that is not common out here.

I *think* my mothers next door neighbor might have a pair. I don't know, I really can't get attached to dogs when I cannot see their facial features. :-/

i quoted Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton from 2001 to prove my point.
Bill Clinton said that “I did better with the Palestinians and the Israelis… than I’ve done with Socks and Buddy.”

Yeah, that fur hanging over their eyes thing is strange.  I have a aversion to breeds that drool too much and leave trails of slobber everywhere.  It is not the dog's fault but what a mess!

One woman I knew had a large sheepdog of some sort and for grooming they would bring out the vacuum hose attachment and the dog was content to set still and let them give him the beauty parlor routine.
