Wow, I just finished reading the thread. Quite a bit going on. ::chuckles::

Well, here´s the thing. We are the melting pot and every religion, every nationality, every culture, every belief, every holiday, every political affiliation, hell, even every food that is found on planet Earth is found on the dirt which resides between the borders of the Pacific/Atlantic, Canada/Mexico. United States Nationals is the official name for our citizens for those who are wondering but beyond that to look at our country, as slaveboy joked,  we actually are the world.

Is there any country on the planet that cannot find it´s own native born sons or daughters within our borders?

We are arrogant because the Portuguese are arrogant .. and they live in America. We are loud because the Brits are loud (just watch a soccer match in England) and they, too, live in America. We are ugly because the Spanish, the Irish, Iraqis, Swedish, Chinese, Mungs, Italians etc., etc., .. are all loud, arrogant, proud, ugly, generous, vindictive, caring, kind, nurturing etc. and they all live in America. There is nothing about the world that is not duplicated, somewhere on the slab of dirt between those two big wet spots. ~~ 

Got a problem with America? Look in the mirror.. because it is you who made us and it is you who are us. We are here because your fathers, grandfathers, neighbors, friends and even your enemies made your way to these borders and added a bit more to the pot. A bit more flavor, a bit more culture and here you have it. America. You don´t have to love it.. but you cannot deny that you and yours helped to create it.

I guess I’ve been lucky…everywhere I’ve been in the world I’ve met good people…except for the few that were shooting at me.

I’ve also traveled with many groups and never have seen the ugly American everyone talks about…I think folks are watching too many movies.

Is that an invite? I'm all for experiencing how local people live, eat, socialise, etc and enjoying local food and drink anywhere in the world. I do not think I will be as surprised as you think though.

I wonder if Germans and Italians fit the arrogant, loud, and ugly? …I know from personal experience the ugly part is true of my heritage…

Actually the county has some great people ... and fish and chips, I recommend Andrews Chippy in Caister and the Pub just behind the lifeboat station ... "The Ship" is the very hospitable epitome of an English pub.

Well, on the second part, you'd be right...I don't believe that it's that simple.. but as for the first? I'm not sorry at all.... I'm as patriotic a Canadian as any American is about their country. Therefore, I'm sorry for you, that you cannot be Canadian.

I'm not sure what you mean by flag break, unless you mean the Pledge of Allegiance in schools? Yes, they do that.

Use to be more common for sir and ma'am but seems to be dying out, though I have noticed in some regions, it's still more prevalent, usually your smaller towns.

eta: Sorry, I thought I was responding to a newer post, not an older one, you've probably been answered a million times by now lol.

Out of cultural curiosity, do the children of those on student/diplomatic/limited/working visa who are not U.S. citizens but going to school there participate in this and if not, how are they excused?

We only did it in elementary school when I was a kid.  We did in our home room every morning.  I don't think there were too many exchange students coming here for elementary school.  Now we did say it at pep rallies and such when I was in high school.  The National Anthem always gets played before a sporting event.  So I guess some exchange students were present.  No one forces you to say it; it's not a law.  If you don't want to say it, you just don't.
