American's don't need excess.  Excess is sold to them as a product ideal.  Such it is in a consumer society.  Greed and Gluttony are gift wrapped as Accomplishment and Privilege.  That mindset permeates every facet of American culture...from business to our dunner plates...and they're all connected.
I do agree with this...

But more importantly, I editted to add that part of the reason is I like good food, and eat what I want, most of the time...   This doesn't include fast food, as I don't go there more than 3times/year at most.   M

liver steaks and onions and mushrooms are my friend
always had them in the military
the liver steaks were at least a good half inch thick yummy

snappy

I hated them when I was younger, but now I'm delighted when I go to a diner because generally they have it.  Or if Im living with someone that likes it too.
The ones I had the other night.... were about that big, and yes I have mushrooms on the side to add to it.

In my area, I noticed that the gas in areas thought of as ghettos is more expensive than mor affluent neighborhoods also.

That is interesting, I have always noticed it was lower in the city and higher when you moved out to the burbs.

Americans on the whole, would rather eat large quantities of poor quality food than smaller quantities of high quality food.

I think a lot of the tendency to overeat has to do with our changing lifestyles. In the beginning of this country we were 90% agrarian. Now I don't know what percentage of farms are even family owned. People used to grow their own food and pick it or kill it and process it.
We still eat like we are performing back-breaking labor when all we have to do is get in our cars and go thru the drive-thru.

That is a big one also. At least here in the midwest. I see so many people that came from farming backgrounds and learned to cook and eat like their farm working heritage. The problem is, very few of us are farmers. We sit at a desk all day, in a car for a commute for up to, or more than, two hours a day. Not exactly physical labour.

I will happily stay in the minority. Find me a good butcher store and open farmers market and I am in food heaven.
Veggies raw or just cooked to al dente and I refer not to boil the hell and nutrition out of it.
At least I know whats going in what I eat.

Gads anything supersized would feed me for a week, although I would not eat if it was fast food.
While I am small, I cant stand the feeling of being overstuffed.
Now mind you I do have the earned belly area spread but hell at 4 months shy of 50, I earned it.
Sweets are a treat that I try to keep to a minimum, hell I have 2 reeses valentine hearts left out of a package of 6
and I shared 2 with BP.

Chocolate is the 5th major food group but #1 in list of importance.

Just saying.......

AND.....good dark chocolate trumps an excess of crappy milk chocolate any day.

one of the benefits of living in the middle of nowhere: there is no temptation to run out for the fast foods or call for a pizza. Junk foods are entirely too accessible and tempting when there is a burger joint on every corner.

That is true. However, city wide there are descrepencies that are clearly evident depending on area that isnt accounted for by city taxes.

That is a HUGE bonus!! What we buy at the grocery store, and what is in the deep freeze,  is what we have.

LaT

Im the opposite, dark chocolate is just too much for me and I like a milky chocolate instead. I do love chocolate milk but again its a perk.

poen made us some Aztec hot cocoa last night....to kill for I say.  Adding a bit of crushed red chili pepper gave it a wonderful hot bite to it but not overly.

I am of the opinion that eating habits are passed, if your raised on unhealthy food or processed I see people that doesnt like this meat, veggie..ect....

Mom raised us on a balanced diet, I started very early on my kids with a balanced diet, actually got them used to all types of veggies before introducing meat.  They have very few cant stand foods.

I am delighted my daughter has passed this over to my 2 darlings grands.  They like almost all things put in front of them, the girrly on much refers her veggies over meat tho.  We all also were raised on hot spicy living it Texas it just part of the norm of cooking, more spice less salt.

If we decide to go out for mexican food, they have to have their own bowl of hot sauce and chips.

I always told my kids....dont base edibles on what they look or feel like at least try...again my daughter handed down.
Imagine a 6 yr old the size of a 4 yr old, that the sushi chef recognises when we would go in and make her a mini plate of her favorite sushi.  She self taught herself to use chopsticks.

Teach them early early, avoid processed foods and sweets and you have a healthy well rounded diet.

4 generations of this and it works.  The only things that are pretty much avoided is food allergies.

"In fact, the rate of obesity in France has started to swell, rising from 8% of the adult population in 1997 to 11% by 2003. Over 40% of the French are now considered overweight. According to a recent Senate report, France has the same share of fat people today as America did in 1991—and an upward trend to match. And these numbers may understate the problem. The 2005 OECD health study says that obesity rates in Britain, at 23%, and America, at 31%, are higher. But it points out that the French figures, unlike British and American ones, are based on polls asking people if they are fat. Unsurprisingly, denial intrudes; self-reporting produces underestimates.…

Thanks aravain. I meant to say in one sitting, I have known men that can consume that in a day and work it all off, so that was my mistake for not being clear enough.

3500 calories is way too much for any one person to eat regardless,

Not true, actually.

For any one average (height and build) person, maybe. My optimal weight's sustaining diet is actually around 3300 calories.

The rest of your post is right on the money though (and it wouldn't be that much in fast food, for sure)!
