I find it interesting how the definition of "mainstream conservatisim" keeps changing. They get someone into office, proclaiming: "At last, a true conservative!" Then they support him no matter what... even when he attempts to turn the US into a theocratic totaltarian state... Then once they've been thrown out on their asses, they step back and say: "Whoa! Now hold on! Bush wasn't a REAL conservative... you can't blame us for the wrecked economy, two wars based on lies, a drowned city, or all the abuses of executive power and assaults on the US Constitution or the Bill of Rights... No, that was Bush... we never really supported HIM...." Y'know... fuck the GOP and the republicans in general. They're getting exactly what they deserve: political extinction. They were all "good germans" for the last eight years. None of them spoke up, none of them even mumbled under their breath, as Bush, Cheany, Rove and Rumsfeld took us down the path that Osama had hoped we would... turning the US against it's own fundamental pricipals. In fact, they helped us all down this road as often, and as forcefully as they could. They sure as hell weren't debating the merits of the PATRIOT ACT, or PATRIOT II. They just sat back, collected their paychecks and the money from the lobbyists, and stuck America's ass up on the horse and told every corrupt corperation to line up and take a turn fucking us, a.k.a "We the People" raw. The GOP is marginalized. As the full extent of Bush's malfesance comes to light, with more memos, and more economic disasters going off like time bombs left behind by terrorists, the bulk of the American people will turn away from blithering shitheads like Limbaugh, O'Riley, Hannity, and Buchannan. The "Way Things Ought to Be" Rush? Yeah... we've had a bellyful of that crap... Now let us school your snide, bully ass on "The Way Things Really Are." GOP = R.I.P, and good riddence to the lot of you failed losers.

However much I dislike conservatism and the Republican party, I believe that a democracy needs a good opposition to the people in power, an opposition that offers a credible alternative to the policy makers. It's a question of balance. By kissing up to a radio chat show entertainer, Steele has demonstrated that he is not in charge of his own party; he has also revealed the extent of his party's disarray. It's bad news for everybody, except for the Democrats of course: I wish the Republican party would rebuild itself alongside modern lines: the kind of extremism that Limbaugh incarnates is over, the country just showed that overwhelmingly, yet the Republican party still sucks up to the extremists within their midst. Time to grow up.

McCain was favoring Joe Lieberman. Now, when I'm inspired, I can go on about Joe Lieberman for as long as 10 or 15 minutes without repeating a single blasphemous obscenity. Suffice to say I have zero respect for him, either as a politician or as a human being. But for McCain, Lieberman was probably the optimum choice. Palin was Disasta from Alaska. She started coming under scrutiny she never had while she was simply Governor, and most likely a hell of a lot more than she ever got when Dobson's people "vetted" her. So voters started getting an earful about Troopergate, and the fact that her ignorance simply did not seem to have any lower bound that could be fathomed, and they heard about some of her buddies, like witch-hunter Thomas Muthee. And they probably reflected on the fact that John McCain was frail and tired, like we've never seen in a Presidential election since 1984, and maybe not even then. Four courses of treatment for melanoma?? Had McCain won, Sarah Palin would now be only one fragile heartbeat away from the Presidency. I think this had quite a few people voting for Obama who otherwise might not have. My point? The "black helicopter" crowd are now a constituency the RNC cannot afford to disregard or offend. They are also Rush's prime audience. So poor Michael Steele was practically ordered to STFU about Limbaugh and apologize, or lose his job. He's only been RNC chairman for about a month, and already, his line troops are shooting him in the back. My take on this is that the long-term consequences of the Southern Strategy that captured control of the country for the Republican Party 40 years ago are now coming home to roost. If it goes on like this, I give the Republican Party perhaps a decade more of life, two at the most. But I usually underestimate the speed with which a system collapse can take place once it starts into motion, so they could completely implode much sooner. If that happens, what I'd expect to happen next is for the Democrats to grow out a "big money" faction or a "populist" faction, which would eventually calve off to form a new second party.
