To noone in particular, this is one of those times when I am glad I started reading the thread before clicking.

My Father is obese, and seventy years old. Because of it he has problems that I won't list here but his equilibrium seems to be permanently off, and he has troble getting his coat on and off, mainly because of being overweight.

I have never been quite obese but I have been overweight and I know how much easier it is to gain than to lose. The olman can't keep his lungs clear because of it, and he has trouble just navigating around the house because of it. I have tried to help and encourage hinm to lose the weight over the last decade, and though he lost some, he is still too tubby to be comfy. He can't sleep on his back, he can't sleep on his front. He gets winded from a twenty foot walk. He is going to die soon, and I mean months if we're lucky. I don't need no city boy doctors to see that this excess weight has cost him dearly not only in lifespan but in quality of life in his waning years. Waning years that would have been forestalled if he had shed the weight.

It is easier said than done. I'll sit there and say that if I looked like that I would not eat for a month, but I now know that even that does not work. Why ? Who knows.

I lost a bunch of weight, but it took a back problem and illness to do it. All I can figure is that my metabolism was being "kept up" with fighting the physical problems and the fact that I had no appetitite. Now that I am in better shape I can feel it coming on and I dread it, but not eating does not work. I shut down, sort of hibernate. Hopefully that will change with the warmer weather coming. But I can feel it,  I don't even own a scale, I don't need one.

So he is dying, and so am I, I guess. So I have nothing to say about this, except one thing.

If you are overweight do every fucking thing you can to lose it before you get old, because then it is too late.

I read this advice that was directed at Steel & the hackles on the back of my neck went up.  Unless you have first-hand knowledge that this is his diet--several soft drinks, Big Gulps & 2 bags of chips a day--I'd have to say that you are making a very large assumption.  I am morbidly obese & I don't drink any soft drinks, nor do I eat chips.  I eat whole grains rather than white flour.  I eat fresh, organic produce when I can.  I eat no products with High fructose corn syrup, but look for those sweetened with agave, fruit juice or organic sugar or completely unsweetened, as I often prefer.  I have quite a healthy diet & yet I am still morbidly obese.  Mine started when I took a medication that "might cause a little weight gain" & I gained 100 lbs in 10 weeks without increasing my caloric intake.  I have never successfully kept any weightloss for any period of time since, no matter what I have tried.  So I will continue to eschew the things that I know are bad for me & eat what I know is good for me so that I can continue to be as healthy and as active as possible at my weight.  I currently have wonderful lab test results & low blood pressure.  The only reason I would like to lose weight is that I know it's easier on my lower joints.  I also enjoy feeling strong & mobile.

I'm inclined to agree with this, especially after a conversation with a few of my girl friends today.  We were talking about about body image issues and how hateful people can be with respect to people who are a little overweight, not to mention morbidly obese.  If this were to happen to your child, you would be devestated as a parent.  There's really no difference, these people are still someone's kids.

There are other eating disorders out there that dont get this kind of shit from people...how bout the beautiful girl who has a closet full of pickle jars filled with vomit ??

i dont see the point of this thread other than to be ugly to someone who is sick. i understand that people do things to themselves...im certain that some of the men on this thread being so disgustingly cruel are just covered with nubile slaves slobbering all over their bodies as they type out their little jokes....

That's a great post but as a 1st responder I'm going to have to disagree with accepting people's sizes.  I've seen a few men/women have to leave the service on disability because of hurting their backs trying to carry/or pick up an obese person even with extra manpower. There's a special WIDE unit in the County for anyone too big in the ambulance so there's extra cost for the unit & the staffing, all because someone couldn't manage their weight.
I know some weight issues are medical issues and beyond patient's control but truth be told the majority of these issues are because the person couldn't control their food intake.
The "monkey on your back" may serve a short term purpose but you have to think about the long term affects but you're right in saying I don't know what's going on in your head so I'm probably just speaking out the side of my neck at this time.  I do know this, you overcame an almost impossible addiction to overcome & you're a better man because of that. I just KNOW you can beat the food cravings.

Speaking as a nurse in long term care, i have heard some pretty disgusting things out of some first responders mouths about what a waste of time and resources it is that they have to take time out of their day to drag some old person off to the hospital instead of letting them die where they lay...

Personally, i would rather code than have the last words i hear some sort of crap like that out of the people who are supposed to be "rescuing" me.

Just MY two cents....too pissed to look for the frickin emoticon.

There are so many factors involved in obesity.
I have a friend who does not eat junk and has great willpower concerning food and she is still morbidly obese, despite spending time excersizing nearly everyday.

She is probably healthier than I am even though she weighs almost 50% more than I do.

In some people who are overweight their brains do not send the message of saity to their stomachs... imagine always feeling physically hungry... they are learning more about the chemistry and neuro-chemistry involved in obesity.

It is easy to judge others... but unless you have walked in someone else's shoes you can't know what they are going through.

one point i would like to make is that morbid obesity causes repercussions that we generally do not think of. Yes...it is difficult to get a morbidly obese person to the hospital in a crisis situation, but i am reminded of another situation when i was right out of nursing school. A morbidly obese man in his 40's was diagnosed with prostate cancer, severe enough to warrant it's removal. No matter how they tried, the surgeons were unable to reach the gland secondary to this mans huge size. They simply couldn't do it.
Their plan changed to a gastric bypass (the lap band was not done at that time) with the hopes the weight loss would allow them access to the prostate.
I don't recall too many of the details, other than listening to him voice his fears about what would occur first, the weight loss or progression of the cancer. He had every right to be scared.

Some of the advice being given is hillarious!

First off, lets explain that weight and obesity do not always have to do with diet, often that is how it starts but then other factors get involved. Like Type II Diabetes and Metaformin which make losing weight very difficult for some people. Being a diabetic I am now a carb watching freak and have done much to change the way I eat, the problem that I have is feeling satisfied which is when over eating or comfort foods come into play.

Those who see Soda, Chips, Cookies, and Other Crap as the Problem are missing quite a lot about the emotional and physical behaviors of an Obese person.

I don't like sweets. I can go a Year without a Candy Bar or a slice of cake, for me I liked a Steak and Potatoe and for dessert ANOTHER Steak and Potatoe. Now with the Type II I have had to put away much of that practice and eat carrots and high fiber foods just to keep from feeling hungry.

Certain foods Trigger High BGL so I can't eat them anymore. Things that are normally Okay for diabetics to eat I cannot.

My Diabetes was brought on by weight and now that I have it losing the weight is a very slow process. Just the nature of my body and how diabetes has affected me.

This is the Point, most people see weight as an issue of hand to mouth and that is not always the case, to assume that that is all it is about just shows a lack of really understanding many weight issues.

I started making comments because this guy who we should all be celebrating because he found love was treated like a monster because of his weight issue which he is trying to fix I mean talk about kicking a horse for what turns out to be no reason at all, I mean the guy IS trying to do something about it but apparently that isn't enough for some people.

I agree Steel, yet it also  has to be taken into consideration that not all obese people's issues with excessive weight is a result of other health issues. There are a large portion of that population who are overweight and/or obese are coping with underlying psychological issues and it manifests itself as binge eating in comfort foods which happen to be high calorie and high fat foods.
Thus that was the gist of my post to Potty. I wasn't trying to discount your weight issues nor mine. I simply wanted to point out that there are too many factors surrounding why a person is obese/overweight. One does not have a greater importance over the other.
