Will anyone be participating in Earth Hour? Several Countries have already. I plan on doing so and will also be taking down the websites I maintain as a form of support.

If you do not know what Earth Hour is...

quote:

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

It's a good idea but what people forget is that power not used isn't power that isn't generated. i.e. the nuclear/coal/oil/whatever generator is still going to be going at full pelt regardless of how much of the output is utilised. It's a symbolic act but we need a top down approach rather than bottom up.

Although perhaps they could lower the output in anticipation but they never gamble on such things as it means possible shortages so over supply is always preferred.

....symbolism is important. If you don't think so go down to your local military recruiting office and burn a US flag outside it. If, as you appear to believe, symbolism is unimportant nothing will happen.

i'll be turning off the lights at the appropriate time....because i think symbolism matters.

Oh, shit.  I had the lights turned off while I was asleep, and then again when I was outside, getting the mower running.  I hope some environmentalist dickhead isn't going to try and claim me as a vote for their bullshit social agenda.  If I give my cooling system a good long test-run this afternoon, will that offset it?

You are all heart for mother earth Rich. You realise one day you'll be up there in heaven looking down on the younger FullCircle who is trying not to drown in melt ice thinking: "If only I had saved the planet that dickhead environmentalist wouldn't be coming to spoil my peace and quiet in heaven so soon."

Traitors to kin are submerged up to their neck in icy water apparently, if you believe all that religious crapology.

Not me, I vote for global warming!
Don't you just love those either or questions?
Maybe I'll go out and burn a huge pile of tires tonight.

Quite the little guilt trip there, Full.  Maybe try that nonsense on someone who isn't familiar with the long history of climate change on our planet?  The theory has been taken over by whackjobs with an anti-capitalist agenda that has nothing to do with saving the planet, and Al Gore is a fat greedhead pig who will say anything for money and power.

But you go right ahead and keep filling the landfills with the batteries from hybrid cars, and telling yourself you can be smug and self-righteous about it.

Rich I can't believe you aren’t thinking about future generations and what about the poor puppies with their puppy dog eyes their legs can only swim for so long before getting tired. How about the sausage dog: such tiny legs how will it cope as the water is rising around it? It will be barking but if you spoke doggy you would hear... "Help me Rich please, only you can help me"

You understand that batteries can be recycled right?

Al Gore bought himself a 100 foot long yacht last year.

Probably better than you understand that we have precisely zero ability to control the climate on this planet.

This is a meaningless symbolic gesture...does nothing but inconvenience people.   It accomplishes nothing except make people think they did something "useful."

ed to add:  The US Flag is a symbol that has substance.  Turning off a light for an hour......

Climate change is one issue sustainability is another at this rate we won't have to worry about the climate changing because we'll be desperate for other answers such as how can we clothe and shelter people without the synthetic by products we all take for granted. Was the last syringe you got jabbed with at the doctors plastic, was he wearing rubber gloves could either of these thing have been so convenient or disposable in days gone past when the population was lower and so making a glass and metal syringe was a good solution to a problem that would be completely impractical today. Go back to the days before synthetics when it took more time and consideration to manufacture products and you’ll realise this isn’t a luxury we have with population difference today. All things in the modern era have sustainability issues and we are realising what they are far too slowly.

Now you are getting to a reasonable area of discussion, Full.  Shame you totally blew your credibility by leading with guilt trips about puppies...

One of our local FM stations had a point/counter-point on this topic earlier today. While both sides agreed that we could stand to use a bit less electricity, mostly through common sense actions (like turning off/unplugging appliances when not in use, etc.), they differed on the symbolism vs. the safety of such a move.

The "pro" side basically said that symbolism is important, that it helps to bind all of us on the planet as a reminder to use a bit less electricity.

The "con" side stated that while the symbolism is a great media play, they are concerned for a potential spike in crime that might occur. They are hoping that people will weigh their own safety before deciding to turn off the lights, and not do it if they feel uncomfortable in doing so.

In any event, I'm sure someone around here will be watching the crime statistics for this coming hour to see if the cautionary folks were correct in their assumptions.

Tonight.

1 hour.

8:30 - 9:30 p.m., when most people's lights are out (or they're at bars...who won't be turning lights off because they don't want people ripping off the pull tab bins), who will be watching TV....watching news reports of people turning off their lights.

Very exciting.

Earth hour.

Riveting stuff.
