I completely disagree. Not believing in life after death doesn't mean "knowing there is nothing but oblivion". It means that one is able to conduct one's life freely and independently from fear of the unknown: because although you might believe, you still have no certainty, otherwise why would you be terrified of death? You seem to be comforting yourself with a possibility that your consciousness won't disappear after your death because you are frightened of facing the possibility that you have one finite period of time during which you will live, and after which there will be nothing. I have reconciled myself to the fact that once I die, I will no longer be. Why be frightened of the inevitable?

Edited for clarity.

You do know that without God there is nothing but oblivion don't you...  and I'll bet you will be afraid of death even if inevitable despite your claims today.

You will be forgotten by your ancestors… you will be forgotten by the human race… you will be forgotten by the universe... You will be nothing…  your existence was for no reason or purpose other than random momentary firing of patterned energy.

That is oblivion…could be true...I hope not.

A truly typical, intelligent and compassionate response from a superstitiously religious person  .

Why is 'compassion necessary; I thought you said there was nothing to fear?

It's not about fear of death: it's about fear of human stupidity and intolerance. When someone tells you that you amount to nothing because you don't fear death and because you don't believe in the afterlife, they are being unkind, and they completely betray the object of their religion, don't you think?

Sort of like how you insist that those who do believe must be afraid of death? Ever heard of “The Hanged Man”?

I believe it is the same message you send to those who believe, with your theory. As for it being betrayal; depends on who their god is.

I never 'insisted that believers feared death'. KD said that he feared death and that believing provided him with solace. It is him I addressed, not the entire religious population of the planet. Please, don't put words in my mouth: it's unbecoming.

Kitten,

I’ve read many times, on these boards, people assuming why other people hold their beliefs, by those who don’t hold the same beliefs; ranging from stupidity to crazy.

My apologies for taking your post as one of them.

Could be right and I'm sorry I said it.

I did not mean it as unkind... I was defining my meaning of oblivion.. forgive me.

Typical christian mindset. I know of at least a dozen faith traditions that are better explanations of existence and less repugnant than the collection of tales of a semitic war god. While I don't believe any of them are true either they're far more likely than a bastardized mystery cult you believe in simple because a Roman Emperor became enamored with it.

...good grief....do you go round knocking on doors and wonder why, despite the lights being on, no-one answers? Do you shout through letterboxes and say, "you're all going to go to hell, bastards!'?

i'll say it really slowly.......you don't like it when people take the piss out of your faith...yet here you are, taking the piss out of those who believe differently to you.

Double standard.

I have dozens of verses to torment anyone who believes that.

I find that really sad.

I invite you to spend even a year going to school board meetings defending science education from believers in biblical inerrancy. Maybe after wiping the spittle off your face a couple of times you'll change your opinion. Maybe it will take having to have all the tires on your car replaced because they were slashed during the meeting. Perhaps it will be the moment when you are relieved that you brought the pepper spray that will change your mind.

Well perhaps having been a school governer and a support worker, I do know exactly what you are talking about after witnessing similar from both sides.

I still find it sad.

Sad that torment or torture is so easily rendered.

Now that you've got that hate out of you do you feel better?
I did not attack anyone... I was explaining my view of oblivion and why I was more afraid of it then hell... that ties into the remarks made by Stella.

But I see it hit a nerve with you… You seem to have no qualms about attacking religion but when your view is even questioned you react badly… How does it feel? Perhaps you should keep that feeling in mind the next time you attack a person for their faith.

....no, you were preaching......at no point did you say, 'in my view'. What you did say was "You do know that without God there is nothing but oblivion don't you... ",
that's not stating a view. That's telling others what they do or don't know. In other words attackng any view that differs from yours.

.....i haven't attacked anyone for their faith. Feel free to find a quote where i have. i do admit, however, to attacking people who believe that their faith gives them the right to try to convert others.......

How about

"This is oblivion...could be true... I hope not"

Does that sound like preaching to you?

How about the post below that...

"I did not mean it as unkind... I was defining my meaning of oblivion… forgive me."

This was before your post... does not this say it was my view?

Sometimes I think you don't read all the way through...you should before you comment.
