And yet the FDA won't 'approve'  ECigs. I'm ordering some this weekend.

I inhaled through a straw for a couple of days and poof. I quit a week ago. Thast what I hope these increased taxes do. I quit back when cigarettes were 3.50 a pack. When I picked it up again( for years i smoked an occasional others cigarette) it was 8 dollars. But luckily I cant stand it for very long so i quit and although I couldnt think for a day and slept alot for 2, it wasnt horrible. SO I say lets stick it to "the man" and say hell no to his stupid sin tax. If you dont smoke, you wont have to pay.

But if everyone gives up the cancer sticks, what will fund these programs? Also, a larger portion of lower income people are smokers, so the tax is on the lower wage earners and effects them more. Any comment about that?

Vice tax has always been around, and it will continue. Once some vices are eliminated, if ever, then they will go after other one's. They will stay away from vices that the majority partake in, such as over eating or sugar intake.

I see no problem in increasing the tax on cigs, liquor, and an extra tax on internet connection fees. Hell if they would just legalize prostitution and drugs, they could heavily tax that and rip that money right away from organized crime.

One of the most significant tools that the government uses to rake narcotics offenders over the coals with is outragrously high taxes.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=ieas&p=tax+stamps+narcotics

You fail to buy your tax stamps then get busted and BAM - they take away your house, your car, your business, and everything else they can get their hands on. And now tobacco products are headed in that same direction... this is like a whole new front in the war on drugs. And I bet there's a whole lot of money to be made in the black market, for anyone who is willing to take a few risks.

After all, I know for a fact that certain Indian reservations commonly sell cigarettes tax free! Who's up for a road trip...

quote:

ORIGINAL: kittinSol

Really? I don't know. I'm not for legalising drugs and taxing them. I'm for decriminalising their use and for not throwing drug users in jail (more money saved, incidentally, but no increase in revenue from some dubious source - the problem with this approach is that it flies in the face of the Reaganite 'war on drugs'. The cops hate the idea. Strange, no?).

No - you're wrong.

Obama's gonna save us all.

How will he accomplish this? By confiscating all of our money, of course.

The poor and elderly....how so? The story makes it sound as if all poor and elderly people are smokers...or as if cigarettes are like food, shelter, or medicine...necessary in order for people to exist.  It's a mis-representaion at best.
quote:

The hefty increase in the federal cigarette tax to help fund a children's health-insurance program has buoyed tobacco foes, who say it will breathe new life into efforts to curb smoking

And what about children that will benefit from the tax increase?

quote:

The federal tax will rise in April to $1.01 a pack from 39 cents today. The average state tax, meanwhile, is $1.19 a pack, and the average price of a pack of cigarettes is $4.32, excluding local taxes and the new federal tax, according to the national Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Jacking up cigarette prices is one of the best means of curbing smoking, particularly among price-sensitive teens, according to public-health experts. Declines in smoking rates have stalled in recent years among both adults and youth, with about 21% of adults currently smoking, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A 10% increase in the price of a pack reduces consumption by about 4%, said Frank J. Chaloupka, an economist and tobacco-tax expert at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Although higher prices reduce the number of cigarettes smoked, tobacco-tax revenue has still risen in nearly every state that imposed significant tax increases, he said. The new federal tax could motivate states to raise their own taxes to help offset the expected drop in cigarette sales, Mr. Chaloupka said.(Wall Street Journal)

i was raised by a smoker, and some of my best friends are smokers...i'm, not saying i support such a large tax increase.  i'm saying that i don't appreciate people using it as a means to convince poor people that the President broke a campaign promise.  It's a huge stretch of the imagination to say so...but a convenient one nonetheless...if one has an agenda.

I'll tell you exactly what will happen around here now that taxes are high.  Tobacco shops and convenient stores will be burglarized a lot more.  I will be seeing more thieves selling stolen cigarettes outside of bars.  I've already heard tobacco shop owners saying they may not be able to stay in business because of the hikes (small business owners that Obama and Co. claim to care about so much.)

How is it a stretch of the imagination, Iron?  He promised not to raise ANY taxes on folks making less than $250K a year.  He has now broke that promise.  President Obama is not stupid; he knows who are smokers in this country.  He didn't care, he went ahead and levied an unfair tax on 20% of the population.

"I would love to see smokers abstain from purchases and see what it does to incomes at the state and federal level. "

That's just it....they know they can't. So they got them by the balls. Might as well tax it though...it's an unhealthy luxury that anyone can do without.  I think it's a great idea actually.

Sorry, but no, it's no stretch at all. Obama pledged never to raise taxes on the poor, and it's predominantly the poor who smoke. Overwhelmingly so, look it up. He also emphatically promised  never to come after people's guns, which was another campaign promise he broke almost immediately upon taking office.

And what about the children? Why tax the poorest among us "for the children"? Why are things like this always "for the children". And is that ever where the money really goes, when politicians make promises like that?

When you're addicted to something, is that thing really a luxury? I don't think that "luxury" is really the proper word for it. In this case, government is acting an awful lot like the dealer, raising the price on something after the addict is thoroughly hooked.

Aww, your concern for the poor is soooooo.........touching.

I got it.

Let`s have a means test so poor smokers won`t pay as much.

Or better yet, butt stamps.Similar to food stamps.

This way your heart won`t bleed as much.

And again I will point out the "addict" can quit whenever he/she makes up his mind to.
It does seem ironic that the voices that scream the loudest about personal responsibility ....or now beating the poor "addict" drum.
