Piracy is a desperate measure by desperate people. If the world community hadn't turned a blind eye to the exactions committed against Somalia and its population by greedy criminals (dumping nuclear waste, medical waste, chemical waste, fishing illegally in the country's water), we might not be where we are today.

Because Somolia is victimized by the failure of her own state, we excuse the threatening of life and the extortion from these criminals ? I have no sympathy.

Somolia is one of those countries that could let the UN come in and be a lot better off. But no...that's re-introducing a bad western influence I guess. Soon, the only people living there will be criminals and maybe prospective terrorists.

No, we don't excuse them, neither do we condone their actions: we explain them, however, and we do not knee-jerk react at the evil African foreigners. We understand that perhaps for some of these people there is no other choice, because they have to survive. We also realise that were we in their situation, it's very possible that we would make the same choice they have made.

If my sea was used as a dumping bog by nuclear companies, if medical refuse was thrown upon my shores, if my fish was stolen from my seas for the benefit of other countries, and I was inside one of the poorest, most dysfunctional nation on the planet... who knows what I'd do, out of desperation?

A regular patrol of gun ships would do the trick. That`s a vital sea lane.I predict Pres.O will get other nations(w/ navys) ehem,.....on board.....[8D] and share the duty.

There already are "regular patrols" by warships in that area and it's not helping.  People don't seem to understand that the "sea lane" you refer to is over a million square miles of ocean.  As Mike said above, needle in a haystack doesn't even come close.

True that.
You can have "Q" ships and patrol ships but until all Merchant Marine ships passing through that area are armed and fully capable of fending off the pirates this will simply continue.

Kittin, we went in there almost two decades ago and tried to help.  When I say "we," I mean the UN and the United States.  Both were attacked by Somalian gangsters, and we left.  I believe in charity and lending a helping hand.  But if I drive over to the ghetto with food and clothing to give to charity, and I get robbed and beaten for my troubles.....I won't go back.

Yeah, Somalian waters have been raped by dirty people taking advantage of the anarchy in Somalia.  We tried to fix it, and other African nations have made efforts to intervene.  But the Somalian population hold pirates and gangsters up as heroes.  Well, they are getting what they ask for.

I feel bad for the disenfranchised, poor folks of the world.  But, I'll be damned if we make concessions towards thieves and murderers.

I say Kudos to President Obama for having the balls to do the job he was elected to do.  These pirates attacked an unarmed vessel and got what they deserved.  They are common criminals.  As for what made them that way, I think putting down a rabid animal should take place before wondering how he got rabies.

I just hope they either arm or escort all American flagged shipping. You know they are to be targets...next time we will not be so lucky.

I'm afraid the time will comes soon when special forces will need to visit them..the only way I'm afraid.

Absolutely, but to the extent that anyone has taken advantage of Somalia is chiefly because they themselves were already disfunctional enough without being able to defend their rights.

Kittin, it is testimony to the corruption of man in general and his continued venality, that unfortunately it is still a very dangerous violent world out there and it is and has been up to Somolia to at some time, as most of the rest of Africa...to step up to the plate and assert nationhood, i.e. protect their own sovereignty.
