I think having rules to follow would make socializing easier and more comfortable for me actually.

Exactly. I can understand how someone unfamiliar with protocol might view it as artificial and feel uncomfortable. How do I act? What do I do? How do I respond if...? But your comment reflects the other side to protocol. If your lifestyle observes a particular set of protocols, and you know what those are, you can feel comfortable anywhere they are observed. Total strangers, doesn't matter. You know exactly what is expected of you, and how to behave. That can provide a nice feeling of security when you are entering a situation where you don't know anyone.

Does your perception of high protocol practices fit the stereotype that I mentioned above?  What experiences have you had that led you to that conclusion?  Are you interested in protocol type settings or events and just haven't had the chance to attend something like that yet?  Have you had fears about doing so?  What do you think you as person would make you feel more welcome?

I was recently invited to join a chatroom here for those who identify as slaves. I read the info about the room, and it mentioned Gor protocol. I msged back the person who invited me, explaining I am not Gor, and thus probably would not be able to participate.  He told me to come on in anyway and that I would be welcome. Unfortunately I stumbled at the very outset, because I refuse to call any man other than my Master "Master".  I absolutely will not do it, as in my mind it is insulting to Him, not to mention the fact that just because you have a penis does NOT mean you get that honor from me, quite the opposite actually, haha.

He encouraged me to stay, and then had a female slave in the room IM me trying to "coach" me.  But basically it boiled down to "yes I understand your rules, but I refuse to play by them"  Buh bye.  I would have been content to just sit and listen, to learn what it was all about, but their protocols would not allow me to do so.

I was interested in learning, but I found this a turn off. I would have felt more welcome if I had been allowed to observe for a while. I enjoy the aspects of protocol between Master and I, the rituals we observe are very comforting and enrich our experience together. I find it eloquent and beautiful, and that's why I wanted to learn more.  But perhaps we are best just doing this on our own, and not trying to be part of a group.

I'm just getting back to bit of protocol, of which I had been lacking severely. My free-spirited self was never that fond of it, but lately, for some unknown reason I'm finding myself craving a bit of it once again. I'm thinking that maybe it's security issue.
