I can understand how an older person, living alone, would find it expensive to eat three meals a day. Many of them, like my father, do not have a clue about cooking. Even if they do, don't have the energy to do so, plus the fact that cooking for one is a pain in the arse.

That leaves more expensive convenience foods.

The secret to cooking for one is to cook things like bolognese, chilli, curry and similar sauce based concoctions. One only has to cook once every two days - and then prepare rice or pasta to go with it when one wishes to eat; which is not arduous at all. Further benefits include only having to wash up every two days, and the fact that such meals are actually better on the second day when they have had chance to develop a little.

One could of course cook once a week and freeze a load of stuff - but its nowhere near as good as fresh and doesnt allow the flavours to develop as they do at a higher temperature.

Here is the thing.  I eat mainly perishables.  Use it right away or it goes bad.  This type of food can not be stocked up- well not easily and not as is.

So I shop a few times a week.  But to eat right- one has to put some time into it.  Even if it is running to the store.

I bring my grandmother groceries.  But I fear it isnt really enough.  I  bring a pizza at times.

As a culture we know very little about food anymore.   In the 70s my household keep 2-3 weeks of food in house. But now days- 3-4 days.

It is abit of a challenge to eat right these days.  One always pays for convenience.

I make of these awesome salads. :-)  I can snack on that all the time and not gain weight.

There are days tho- that toast with some butter will do.

I am not elderly yet.  With gram she has the house hot- is always cold....and so forth.

Part of the problem I see and saw in the building I lived in for the elderly and disabled, is that many of these people were one step from a nursing home and total care.  They will resist going to a nursing home as long as they can and so they often take short cuts or will go without just to live on their own.

In the building I was in, there was one meal served a day in a basement room and many could not get there at the time it was served and many could not afford the three dollars it cost.  It was well worth the three dollars.
Meals on wheels wasn't available to everyone and many fell through the cracks in different systems.  Some didn't want to ask for help becasue of pride.  Some were so depressed that they isolated in their studio apt.

You could see people pushing a grocery cart for their monthly shopping trip and there would be nothing but pot pies and the cheap niney cent tv dinners.  If they bought those, they could eat all month.  If they bought better foods they ate for two weeks.  Most could not cook one day a week much less every other day.  They knew they would do better health wise and in eating in a nursing home, but they didn't want to lose that one thing they valued more.  Freedom.

Lockit- good point.

The local building that we have- I popped into a meeting that was there.  Those venues are not the best place to be.  Gossipy-petty- better then a nursing home- but still- it was missing something.

my mum is lucky, financially she is ok, she lives five minutes from a huge tesco,
She isnt disabled, shes 75 and of sound mind. However she does have arthritis which some days makes her  hurt to even open a can on beans, let alone cook like she used to, she cant always hold a pan, she  cant twist a knob on the cooker, just little things, but having spent a lot of time*years* working with  the elderly like Lockit, its a small step to being practically helpless, Im not surprised  she doesnt feel like cooking.
My sisters live 200  + miles away and mum will be moving closer when the housing market picks up.... she cant and doesnt want to keep up a full size house.Shes one of the lucky ones, for that im greatful, but, it could change in a heartbeat.
Ive seen hundred and hundreds of people who arent as lucky as she is. I dont need a left leaning source to tell me anything.
I Bet there isnt even a right wing study out there, cos they dont give a flying fart, unless it comes down to someone they care about.

I was flipping channels and it was either msn or cnbc.

Now apologize, since he was right about it being a left leaning source.

I think not.  It doesn't matter what the source of the program.. the fact's were correct.  Left and right mean two things to me... left and right... not a stand.

Gee wiz. Here we all are. Speaking for the elderly. And how old are we? I'm not yet 50, altho 49 does feel elderly at times. the truth is, I dont come from a wealthy background and my friends dont either. But our elderly parents did ok for themselevs. I feel like this thread presumes old people are just in terrible shape. When in my experieiance, they saved much much more than my generation.

So before we get all teary eyed about the old folks. Just give yourself a moment and wonder if perhaps those poor people have an awful lot of money in the bank boo hoo. In my experieince over and over again, that is the case. So lets stop feeling so awful about people who might just have the means to be helping US!

play semantics all you want, you know what he meant. And you dont know if the facts were "correct" or how much they were exagerrated or cherry picked. Between SS and welfare, I personally dont buy the numbers.

LOL... I think you assume a lot.  I lived in a building that was twelve stories high with ten units per floor, in a city of less than 100,000.  You have to have a certain income to be there and there was a long, long waiting list.  They did not have funds in a bank or believe me, most that I knew would be off sailing somewhere with a crew to do all the work.  No funneral needed... just a quick word and into the sea.

There are many who are in need.  Period.  And things aren't going to get any better with charities overloaded and programs being tampered with and shut down.

I dont view seniors as having a great life.  A few do- but more often then not- what I see is modest means and modest life style.

The savings?   I doubt it.   My grandfather was thrifty- I was surprised to learn how much he did not have.  Well- with kids needing bail outs- from time to time- that would explain it.

~FR

I don't wanna cook:

Last night I ate a piece of cherry pie.

Tonight I may slather a tortilla with peanut butter.

I'm only newly elderly, though................EH?

Actually, Walgreens is offering free Take Care clinics for those who have lost their jobs and don't have insurance.  Now, the clinic can't do everything but it is good for the less serious ailments.

Right, they are doing three things that they talked about and I can't remember for sure what they were, but think it was blood pressure, bone density and blood sugar stuff.

Good for them. They could use some good press.

One possible GOP response.<like ,......global warming is good,a longer growing season>

"Well, considering there`s an obesity problem, this good news,................ for at least some of them".

Or.

"No one`s dying of starvation"

Rite Aid does the same thing,,, its checking cholesterol levels, blood sugar, blood pressure....gives you a reading and indication that there may be a problem,  but not any type of care or follow up.
