I can, and my neighbors sister who's mentally retarded can, if she doesn't blow it all on candy and junk stuff. and she regularly does. And my bf did. His rent was 500 dollars, and he was making about 800 dollars and he had gas and a car to deal with and coming to see me twice a week 2 hours away and he lived very well. He didn't want for anything.

Of course I don't have to buy groceries my bf pays that bill and rents super cheap for me since i board with family in the detached studio garage, . but if I had to live in an apartment that was expensive, even for how crappy it was, and I couldn't get more than i got now, It'd be different.

I believe it cost money to belong to AARP, The impoverished elderly I know don't belong and they certainly don't have extra money to join.

I also believe my father receives about $700.00 a month in social security. How many people do you know that can live on that?

Hmm.   Just 3 people I know who live on that in my general area.  Most I know live on $1500+ a month.

Rents start at close to $500.   Maybe a box for $425.  unheated, no parking. etc.

Thank you for sharing this post, stella.
It is so sad to see older/elderly people that are reduced to skipping meals,
and not getting their basic needs met, in their twilight years.
