Owner59 -> Politics Mixed With Religion (4/15/2009 9:25:05 PM)

In my opinion, any church or religious organization that endorses a politician or gets involved in politics should lose their tax exempt status.Period.No exceptions.

"Last time we mixed politics and religion, people were burned at the stake."

Last time we mixed politics and religion....we elected Bush to the Oval office...or perhaps it was when Palin was selected to run as V.P......either way it sucked big time.

I agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly, O59. Holy shit - Hell hath frozen over.

Starting with Trinity? I could possibly support that.

i'm not familiar with religions that have political affiliations.  i'm also not sure with what is wrong with it?  OP, you have a political opinion obviously, what's wrong with a religion having an opinion?

DomKen -> RE: Politics Mixed With Religion (4/18/2009 9:49:05 AM)

Trinity endorsed a political candidate? Must have happened last night. IOW Sanity you are implying something untrue.

slvemike4u -> RE: Politics Mixed With Religion (4/18/2009 9:51:03 AM)

sanity how about a simultaneous loss of tax exemption.....you know an appearence of fairness at the least.
Christine seperation of Church and state and all that sort of stuff.

What's wrong is a tax exempt organization, supposed to be entirely devoted to charitable activities, spending any time or money endorsing politicians.

If you want to have a church that endorses political candidates then obey the tax laws for groups that do that. IOW stay out of politics or pay taxes.

Sanity -> RE: Politics Mixed With Religion (4/18/2009 9:54:18 AM)

Are pictures proof enough for you?

Or do you require more direct evidence than that.

Why don't you do us all a huge favor mike, and see if you can find a link to that ever-elusive "seperation of church and state" clause in the Constitution that we keep hearing so much about, but  no one can ever seem to locate...

ok i wasn't aware of that but it makes sense.  still, i'm sure all religions have a political opinion from catholics to jews to whatever.  it's just human nature...guess if they want to keep their tax status they need to keep their mouths shut.  easier said than done, but i'm just a person, not a big, bad religion. So, you think we should begin using the full weight and power of the federal government to quiet certain people's political voices, through the threat of punishing taxation, in order to please a certain tiny segment of the political spectrum...

Why not. What's the worst that could possibly happen?

So now you require proof that ours is a secular govt...sheesh sanity, can't you just take some  things on faith.

here2serve24 -> RE: Politics Mixed With Religion (4/18/2009 10:24:50 AM)

We give POS organizations like ACORN MILLIONS of dollars a year and they are radical left. Churches being exempt from taxes? That just totally pisses liberals off....fuck those liberal pusses.

Sanity -> RE: Politics Mixed With Religion (4/18/2009 10:29:53 AM)

No, all I'm asking is for some kind of evidence to prove your assertion that our founders were opposed to religious people speaking their minds.

Or sanity, and this is just an idea mind you,we can let everybody have and voice there own political opinions....while asking church's who enjoy tax exempt status not to make pronouncements concerning public policy from the pulpit.....what do you think of that? They get to have and voice....while we maintain at least a vaneer of seperation.

Sanity -> RE: Politics Mixed With Religion (4/18/2009 10:34:28 AM)

Do you wish to use the IRS to crush the free speech rights of everyone who disagrees with the far left, mike?

Or just those Conservatives who happen to attend church.
