Status: offline 		Unfortunately tainted animal feed is a common problem. We have enough difficulties trying to inspect human plants, as in the case of the peanut butter scare, and pet food plants. But large animal feed companies get zero inspection. And it's very easy for a bag of feed to be next to a machine leaking oil and absorb it.

We bring our own horse feed to shows, because we don't trust the stuff for sale there. I'll buy hay and bedding but not oats and sweet feed.

Status: offline 		I would be looking for someone to dismember if I thought it was done on purpose and they were my horses.  Anyone who would do that to a horse is right up there with a child molester in my book.  If it turns out to be intentional, they should make the perps eat the same feed that the horses ate.  I believe that would be justice.

Status: offline 		I don't mean to be insensitive to our horse lovers here.  But if this happened to a bunch of pigs or cows, would you be so upset?  Pigs are much more intelligent than horses.  I've never understood this special place the horse gets in the hearts of Americans.  I don't see horses as any more special than cows.

Now I'm not advocating animal abuse by any stretch of the imagination.  If this was indeed intentional, it's horrible.  But I just don't understand the special love for horses that many have.  I've rode one, I've been around them.  Like I said, not much different from cows.

Status: offline 		I've never known a cow to work as a therapy animal, I've known a horse to teach a kid with severe CP how to walk, since the gait of a horse is very close to a person walking. I've known a horse endanger itself to protect the rider. I've known a horse to teach an emotionally disturbed child how to control herself, to read her, to know when he had to do everything for her, and to know when she could do a little herself.

He saved her life, kept her going until new medications came onto the market, and protected her from herself and others. He's in semiretirement now, doing the same for a schizophrenic and a blind child. He was my daughter's first horse and the main reason she's doing great now. These days she's learning reining and cutting, team penning and other cow events, and she's had a cow tried to trample her, something her horses never have done.

Status: offline 		Horses have never trampled anyone?  Cows have never been used as therapy animals.....really....are you sure about that?  I've heard of many animals endangering themselves to protect humans. 

You never did mention pigs.  You do realize they are much more intelligent than horses?

Status: offline 		Well if you've never owned one, you don't get it and I'm sorry but there is a huge difference from a cow--horses can show devotion, affection and emotion--but to have 21 animals of any kind  drop dead in 3-4 hours is criminal--so sometime, I'll put My horse against your pig any day--pigs don't pull carts, if cars fail, horses cans still get us around--horses don't eat everything, pigs will eat human remains.

Having raised both, I have to refuse to believe that.  Scientisis can come up with tests to prove anything they want.  I've dealt with both animals day in and day out.    Pigs are meant to be eaten.  Horses are friends and companions.

Camels could still get us around.  Oxen pull wagons, as do asses.  All animals domesticated and used by man can and do show affection for humans.  What's the difference?  You haven't provided a rational argument.  I have nothing against your affection for these animals.  I just don't see why people take such offense to them being used for the same purposes as other animals.  Horses have been used as food throughout human existence.  The reverence that horse cultures like the Mongols and the Huns placed on horses didn't stop them from readily eating horses. 

You mentioned pigs' dietary habits.  I hate to break this to you, but pigs are no different from early humans.  We are both omnivorous, opportunistic scavengers.

Irish you can disagree all you want.  It's a fact that pigs are more intelligent than horses.  Pigs and humans are very much alike.  As I posted earlier, we are both omnivorous, opportunistic scavengers by nature. 

As I said earlier, I am not excusing this if it was indeed a deliberate act.  I just find it odd that we attach so much more humanity to horses than we do other grazing, herd animals.  I find it odd that we actually pass laws forbidding horses to be used as meat animals.

Actually, no.  We have passed laws preventing horses from being used as food in many states.  Attempts have been made to make it federal law.  I don't get it, horses have provided humans with meat for the entirety of human existence.  Horses are grazing, herd animals like cows or bison.  I don't see the problem in using them for food.  From what I've read, their meat is leaner and healthier than cows' flesh.

Status: offline 		I have to say, as a vegetarian for the past 20+ years and an owner of countless animals in that time, I have to agree with slaveboy's sentiments. I've always been somewhat baffled by the fact we see certain animals as more 'worthy' of thier lives than others.
That said I think the outrage is aimed, in part, at the nature of the 'killing'. In a society that makes food of animals, killing them is inevitable - but that doesn't mean we shouldn't treat them with dignity and respect until the very moment they're dead.

Status: offline 		I have known a horse to trample someone, but it was a stallion, most of the horses I know are geldings and they bond with their riders, especially the kids.

And yes, pigs are very intelligent but intelligence isn't the be-all and end-all in a relationship, love and caring and a special bond is more important to me. I don't know of cows that bond with humans the way horses do.

Status: offline 		So a few facts for discussion sake---yeah camels can be used to get around, but we don't have any here in the US in herds---now in the scale of animal intelligence, one has to define based on characteristics---a horse is smarter of those three on the flight scale as it can detect a predator--a pig and cow cannot.
 
Oxen pull carts, yes, but they are cattle not pigs and only that breed actually is a work animal and  even they can't recognize a predator.
 
The smartest animal next to man is the dolphin, for its ability to recognize itself in the mirror, detect and attack a predator,  capture its food, fool its food into being captured and its apparent enjoyment of sex.
 
Yeah people who have horses are pretty emotional about them. As for food, you'd be better off eating dog, it would help reduce the poplulation, eradicate the need for euthanasia and the orientals have been eating them for years. Its the other white meat, haven't you heard?
