     The New York cases have now been confirmed by the CDC.  The question that needs to be answered, and the sooner the better, is just how lethal this strain actually is.  If it in CA and NY, it's going worldwide.

It's already worldwide. New Zealand, France, and Spain are now reporting possible cases. Whatever the nature of this virus, the toothpaste is already out of the tube, now it's mostly a question of how bad it's going to be. I may be stuck here in California longer than I expected, because I already have flu-like symptoms and by this Friday, when my flight leaves for Minnesota, I may not be able to return. They're isolating symptomatic international travelers already; by Friday, i wouldn't be at all surprised if they're isolating symptomatic domestic travelers as well.

I'm actually a lot less concerned about this thing today than i was yesterday. The fact that even though it's been spreading worldwide for a week or more, but there've been no deaths or even severe cases outside of Mexico, is somewhat encouraging. It's still something to  be taken seriously, but it doesn't seem as alarming as it did just 24 hours ago. One good thing about it is that at the very least, it'll be a good way to test the system and methodogy for dealing with large-scale flu outbreaks. Sort of a dress rehearsal for the coming bird flu pandemic.

I'm just Mr. Compassion, Rich. Underneath all this, that's who I am.

I read in one of these articles that people can be contagious without showing or feeling symptoms. Kind of scary! And what's weird about the deaths in Mexico was that most of those who died were healthy middle-aged people, the last ones you would expect.

      Your thoughts for President Obama's well-being are touching, Sanity.  It is so nice to see, after eight long years of hate-filled vitriol, that the other opposition can still regard the President with some human compassion.

popeye1250 -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 10:19:46 AM)

Sanity, I read that somewhere too.
They said it was like the "Spanish Flu" of 1918, people between the ages of  20 and 40 died from it.

TheHeretic -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 10:31:42 AM)

      A quick read on wiki says the 20-40 year old deaths in the 1918 pandemic might be because the strain killed by an over-reacting immune system.  The stronger and healthier the immune system, the bigger the over-reaction.

     I hadn't seen the reports on France and Spain confirming it.

     The conspiracists are making me laugh pretty hard though.  Human-avian-swine doesn't scream government weapons laboratories.  It screams crappy little shack where a farmer keeps pigs and chickens.

MissEnchanted -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 12:07:15 PM)

I'd love to see an updated map. The one on WHO site is a week old.

Anyone here have a link to a world-wide map that shows confirmed Swine cases?

Thanks in advance,
Me

Damn!  Yahoo News just reported that Canada is now reporting cases!

As I understand it all flu strains contain bird DNA.

You understand incorrectly.

The influenza virus is a actually group of related viri sharing certain common traits. Bird flu shares genetic information with swine flu as well as human strains and strains that infect other organisms as well. No strain has genetic material derived from any verterbrate. And finally of course the influenza virus contains no DNA at all but instead its genetic material is a strand of RNA.

Thank you for the clarification.

I found this link that explains the evolution of influenza viruses well:

intenze -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 1:56:13 PM)

hi Panda sorry to rain on your party, but a spokeperson from the CDC said today at their news conference that the reason we have not seen so many fatalities is because we have not had that many cases, yet.  They fear there will be more.

Drink plenty of water.  Also- dont accept any flu shots.

I am sure it will blow over.

.....or listen to your doctor and to trained medical professionals.  When I hear people give unqualified medical advice about vaccinations, it just amazes me.  If someone I know was arrested, I wouldn't give them legal advice.  I'd tell them to call a lawyer.  Likewise I don't listen to the plethora of quack websites and alternative medicine fools that give advice on subjects they are completely uninformed on.

Yikes thats cause for concern.

I hit nyc last weekend and have been sick since I got here. Which was pretty surprising to me since I tend to not get the average cold, flu ect.  Im not totally positive it not just from allergies from the ride up from FL.
Growl....I have such bad timing.

The comment that a super immune systems doesnt bode well is troubling, since mine catches about everything before it has time to sink in.

Im banking on allergies.....*crosses her fingers*

DavanKael -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 7:28:21 PM)

Gotta say I am a bit concerned and I'm not generally a 'hop on the bandwagon' sort.  Flu pandemic isn't a matter of if, it's a matter of when.  Makes me glad for those food staples I have 'round the house and the store of food for my non-human co-habitants of the house.
Hopefully this won't amount to anything big but it seems rather troubling.
Best wishes, all,
  Davan

popeye1250 -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 10:12:14 PM)

Davan, I hope you're right but the News updates comming out every hour are very troubling!
And seeing that the CDC says that Mexico is the "epicenter" for this I wonder if it's going to "occur" to the W.H. to maybe close the border until further notice or will they worry about "offending" foreigners?
If they don't and it causes a lot of deaths President Obama could possibly be looking at impeachment.
The problem is that tens of thousands of people per day are crossing that border legally and illegally, if just one (1) has that stuff they could then infect other people after a day or two and those other people infect more people etc, etc. We could end up with hundreds of thousands of deaths or more in a few weeks.
One person on a plane could infect dozens of others in that closed environment with recirculated air.
In quarantienes the best thing is for everyone to stay put and not move about.

TheHeretic -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 10:24:34 PM)

       Popeye, it's Americans going down there on vacation who brought it back.  Though I'm sure the number of illegal immigrants in our emergency rooms (instead of clinics and urgent cares) is going to be a cause of legitimate concern.

popeye1250 -> RE: Swine flu transmitted to humans Mexico/USA (4/26/2009 10:27:54 PM)

Heretic, understood.
That's why we need to close that border (among many other reasons!)

People who are in large social settings, schools, hospitals, sporting teams, etc need to be especially careful.  The populations most vunerable are the young, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
