ORIGINAL: TheHeretic The New York cases have now been confirmed by the CDC. The question that needs to be answered, and the sooner the better, is just how lethal this strain actually is. If it in CA and NY, it's going worldwide. It's already worldwide. New Zealand, France, and Spain are now reporting possible cases. Whatever the nature of this virus, the toothpaste is already out of the tube, now it's mostly a question of how bad it's going to be. I may be stuck here in California longer than I expected, because I already have flu-like symptoms and by this Friday, when my flight leaves for Minnesota, I may not be able to return. They're isolating symptomatic international travelers already; by Friday, i wouldn't be at all surprised if they're isolating symptomatic domestic travelers as well. I'm actually a lot less concerned about this thing today than i was yesterday. The fact that even though it's been spreading worldwide for a week or more, but there've been no deaths or even severe cases outside of Mexico, is somewhat encouraging. It's still something to be taken seriously, but it doesn't seem as alarming as it did just 24 hours ago. One good thing about it is that at the very least, it'll be a good way to test the system and methodogy for dealing with large-scale flu outbreaks. Sort of a dress rehearsal for the coming bird flu pandemic.
