This should get interesting.  We have the ACLU criticizing Obama and Mitch McConnell praising him.

Obama seeks to block release of abuse photos

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is seeking to block the release of hundreds of photos showing prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan being abused, reversing his position after military commanders warned that the images could stoke anti-American sentiment and endanger U.S. troops.

The pictures show mistreatment of detainees at locations beyond the infamous U.S.-run Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.............
..........Federal appeals judges have ruled, in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, that the photos should be released. After those losses in federal court, the Justice Department concluded that any further appeal would probably be fruitless.

Last month, Gibbs said the president had concurred, though without commenting on whether Obama would support the release if not pressed by a court case.Through an arrangement with the court, the Pentagon was preparing to put out, by May 28, two batches of photos, one of 21 images and another 23. The government had also told the judge it was "processing for release a substantial number of other images." The total number of photos to be released was expected to be in the hundreds.

The official emphasized that the president continues to believe that the actions depicted in the photos should not be excused and fully supports the investigations, prison sentences, discharges and other punitive measures that have resulted from them. But that is not likely to quiet Obama's critics.

Indeed, the ACLU quickly lambasted Obama's move."The decision to not release the photographs makes a mockery of President Obama's promise of transparency and accountability," said ACLU attorney Amrit Singh, who argued and won the case in front of the 2nd U.S. Court of Appeals in New York. "It is essential that these photographs be released so that the public can examine for itself the full scale and scope of prisoner abuse that was conducted in its name."

On Capitol Hill, the top Republican welcomed the move."I agree with the president that the release of these photos would serve no purpose other than to put our troops in greater danger," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "The president made the right decision and I applaud him for it."

In reversal, Obama rules out release of detainee photos

(Emphasis added)

WASHINGTON (AFP) — President Barack Obama on Wednesday reversed a decision to release photos showing abuse of "war on terror" detainees, saying he feared it would cause a backlash against US troops abroad.

The about-face came after US military commanders warned that the photos could be used as a recruiting tool for extremists and jeopardize the safety of US troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Pentagon said.

The Obama administration announced last month it had agreed to release hundreds of photos from US-run prisons in Iraq and elsewhere in response to a long-running lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The photos were used as evidence in criminal investigations of US soldiers accused of abusing detainees during president George W. Bush's administration.

Obama said issuing the photos would "inflame anti-American opinion and put our troops in greater danger" without shedding any new light on past abuses under the previous administration of George W. Bush.

Hmmmmmm... certain people aren't too proud of what's depicted in these pictures. I suppose it would be too much like smearing their face in their shit.

Perhaps next time, they'll think twice before torturing and abusing detainees.

Or think twice about taking pictures of what some might deem to be torture and abuse.

Backlash?  Rubbish.
Many of those people would cut the heads off of American soldiers given half a chance.
We have been fucking with them for 60 years now, and in the age of instant information transfer, it's harder to keep "dirty little secrets".
Photos released or not- our troops are in danger due to policy, not any one instance (or group of instances) of shitty behavior during this occupation.

If he ever finally makes up his mind in which direction he's leading us. One consolation though, if you don't like an Obama policy just wait five minutes, and it will change.

Lucky for him, the average braindead American doesn't have a five minute attention span.

Weren't you the one talking in another thread about feeling morally superior to anyone who doesn't share your Judeo-Christian values?

Ah... but now we know for sure that such photos exist, don't we?

They'll sit there... unreleased. Let the pressure build. Wait. Just wait. As Johnny Depp said, as Captain Jack Sparrow... "You've got to find the opportune moment, Mate..."
Like maybe during a high profile war crimes trial... when they'll be "accidentally leaked" to the press?

Cell Phones Interrupt Already Contentious White House Briefing

The White House press briefing this afternoon has been contentious, with some major give-and-take between CNN's Ed Henry, ABC's Jake Tapper and other correspondents as they pressed press secretary Robert Gibbs over the decision today by Pres. Obama not to release detainee abuse photos.

All three cablers were taking it live when the tension was lifted briefly by a series of cell phone rings, first from John Gizzi of Human Events. "Just put it on vibrate, man, we did this before," said Gibbs. When it rang again, Gibbs stepped off the podium, demanded the phone, and tossed to an aide in the back room. When Gibbs began to answer the question, CBS' Bill Plante's phone rang. But Plante ignored Gibbs' request to hand it over. Instead, Plante, a 28-year White House veteran, left the room to laughter. About five minutes later Plante returned to his front-row seat.

Let me see if I understand this....young Americans involved in such despicable acts doesn't bother you too much....but being stupid enough to film said acts....ticks you off a bit.
Does that about cover it?

The problem with that is that President Obama keeps getting things right the second time.  At some point, we are all going to be stuck with his first instinct, instead of what comes out after the aides and staffers dry behind his ears, and explain the facts of life to him.

When, if ever, is Barack Obama going to release his school records? All his followers constantly harp that the man is brilliant, but I have seen absolutely nothing backing these claims up. Look at this current example... his gut reaction was obviously wrong, and it was the same with the decision to not then to then to not prosecute anyone for "torture". Ever seen video of him struggling without his teleprompter? I have. And there's the Rev. Wright thing, why hang out with a racist preacher for twenty years.

I don't think he's quite as bright as Bush, and Barack Obama may well be the dumbest president we've ever seen. At least, that's what the evidence would suggest.

Hes fucked no matter what he does, just look at the posts here.
When the pics do get leaked he will get the blame for that too.
but the people responsible will get away with it again. Happpily slagging him off to save their own lying bastard asses.

DarkSteven -> RE: Obama seeks to block release of abuse photos‎ (5/13/2009 7:17:54 PM)

He's already set the machinery in motion to release the pics.  I'm not sure if he's intending to bring the process to a halt, as everyone here assumes, or if he's going to simply offer nominal opposition and go on record as opposing what will happen anyway,
