Onward Christian soldiers...violating their codes of conduct and strict regulations against proselytizing.

If true,(from what I know about fundies,I believe it is)I can`t think of a more insulting or dangerous practice.

At worst, certainly a cause to rally against and a recruitment tool for our enemies there. At best, arrogant and insulting.

Well, at least the troops aren't shooting or hummiliating them, as in Abu Ghraib. Besides, I'm sure the nationals they hand them out to are happy for something other than their hand to wipe with.

TheHeretic -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 8:29:12 AM)

It's certainly a big "no-no" sort of activity.  Do you think they are trying to get themselves shipped out of Obama's War?  [;)]

What a load of bollocks. Christianity suggests its followers offer the other cheek, not that they take arms. It's a peacenick religion: therefore, those that fight in its name are either lying, or complete idiots. Or both.

I'm guessing you missed the bit where Jesus told his followers to sell their clothes to buy swords...

kittinSol -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 8:52:18 AM)

Metaphorical swords. Are you trying to say that Jesus would have backed the war? How very presumptuous of you.

MarsBonfire -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 9:05:37 AM)

Hummm... WWJD?

Would he lie to his people, in order to lead them into a war against a people who were not responsible for attacking them?

Would Jesus torture those around him, if he thought they might have some information he needed?

Would Christ listen in on all the talk of his neighbors, just to keep tabs on who was against him?

Would Jesus take his Father's name in vain, claiming that all his actions were underwritten by God himself? No matter how immoral, sinful, or violent?

Would Jesus bear false witness against his neighbor, claiming that the attacks of the Romans were actually the work of the neighbor that he found annoying to him, so that he could erradicate him, and have the rest of the community behind his actions?

Presumptuous of me?  You are the one presuming to say what Jesus meant metaphorically and otherwise.  As I recall, the swords his followers lifted their robes to show him were quite real.

Considering that this documentary was filmed over a year ago, the answer would be no. But you knew that I bet and were just trying to score points for some reason.

LadyEllen -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 9:12:22 AM)

Its all a bit presumptuous to claim to know what Jesus said at all, let alone to try to interpret that which it has been claimed he said, especially when those claims are very selective and selective to a certain end - selective here used in preference to another word we might choose.

I'd just like to say thanks for putting quotes around "Christian" in this context.

And that's a sword that cuts both ways, LadyE, presuming which bits can be accepted as likely accurate, and which bits we assign to the grand conspiracy to control the masses.

There goes my plan for killing two birds with one stoning.

When in Rome.

Wow some people do have the Mob mentality. So I guess all it takes is more than one to be a mob.

So where were the bibles handed out? Where did the news report originate from? Were they just discussing what to do with the bibles, or did they actually do it? If they did it, then why has the military not charged them?

I suppose getting news from youtube is not the best source, eh?

Here is why:

" There is no proof the Bibles were confiscated, "but there is of course no proof they were handed out either", said U.S. military spokesman in Afghanistan, Col. Greg Julian.
Julian expressed frustration that stories like these and other controversial issues "may cause locals to lash out," possibly inciting more violence in the region. "

" KABUL (Reuters) - Bibles in Afghan languages sent to a U.S. soldier at a base in Afghanistan were confiscated and destroyed to ensure that troops did not breach regulations which forbid proselytizing, a military spokeswoman said. "

Edited to add: My apologies to NorthernGent for calling him out on the "mob mentality" comment he made in another topic.

Owner, I wasn't aware that the savages "needed" "recritment tools."
And let the muslims try to hand over quorans to them too!
"My cloud friend is better than your cloud friend!"  I bet both groups have "Secret Santa's."

i praise the Lord everyday for what He does in my life, and all over the world. i am thrilled at the prospect of Gods Word being in that part of the world, and in their language. i'm glad i saw this thread. [:)] Of course this is strictly my view point on this story.

I'm very happy for you that it works for you - to all doubters, take it from a confirmed Heathen, it does work and very well for many.

But the problem with this is that its very, very, very likely that there were Christian Afghans for some time before we in the north of Europe were converted. Clearly, it didnt work out long term. Similarly with Buddhism, which was in Afghanistan long before Christianity might have got there.

And the real problem is that this behaviour - handing out Bibles, just isnt a helpful one at this point in the current scenario. In fact its a harmful behaviour to the interests of our troops and to the interests of those civilians seen to be receiving the Bibles. When those civilians are later executed, their blood will be as much on the hands of those who put them to predicament as those who fired the shots.
