We need an Army post near the town.

So we'd need a commanding officer - probably a colonel, a hard and distant man, grown bitter from the ever-growing awareness that any chance he once had of becoming a general has long since passed him by, and the rest of his career will be spent shuttling from one distant, dusty outpost to another - and his wife, a lonely, 40-something woman, once the promising daughter of a privileged family, who barely remembers the dashing young officer who swept her off her feet and carried her from her home back east toward what she imagined would be an exotic, elegant life of glamor and romance.
