Male subs' occupation - 5/26/2009 4:57:07 AM

I was discussing this with someone off-board and I thought it was interesting enough to bring up here...

What I'm curious about is whether a male sub is more likely to have a certain occupation than another.  I'm guessing that you find more male subs in knowledge worker jobs -- engineer, IT (computer guy), doctor, lawyer, manager, financier, etc., and not so many in the trades -- plumber, electrician, carpenter, landscaper, mason, mechanic, etc.

I know there are some Ladies here who probably know a fair number of subs and I wonder if you'd agree with this, and if you do, why do you think this is?

I haven't seen an occupational pattern.

I have no idea how you can figure this out, but I do disagree with you. The odds of finding a submissive landscaper/mechanic whateva are probably as high as finding one as a lawyer or a doctor or whateva.

a lot of boys are out of work now. Women should not be surprised to having to select subs who are unemployed

(and btw, my guess isn't coming from a place that's like, "male subs make more/less money!" or "male subs have better/worse jobs!" or anything like that -- it's more "male subs probably live more in their heads and this might be reflected in their choice of occupation")

If that theorem were true, they'd all be pole dancers.

I've seen no pattern...  Have met/dated a city council worker, an engineer, a homeland security officer, and a lawyer.    I'll get back to you if any of the above occupations repeat.

Maybe it is just me, but there seem to be quite a lot of subs who work in creative jobs or the legal profession.

An anthropology professor I know did her dissertation on the relation between kinks and occupations.  I have a copy of her dissertation.  It's long, but the oversimplified version is this:

People who had professions where they were totally in charge tended to be Dom.  Small business owner, for example.  People who had professions where they were "in charge" but actually depended on the person they were supervising to do things, tended to be sub.  Examples: lawyers, therapists, teachers.

It's the only scientific work I'm aware of in this area.  Maybe there's other work that contradicts it.  I have no idea.

A very interesting topic.  While I can't comment on what occupations are most prevalent amongst subs:  in the short time I've been involved, I've been surprised at the variety of professions represented.  I also tend to see mostly educated and successful men.   We could very easily go off on a tangent here about "alpha male in public/submissive in private", but I think there is a LOT of truth to that.  As far as a list of occupations I've seen:  business owners, lawyers, professors (VERY prestigious, lol) a dentist, IT guys, salesmen.....you name it.

Mine works in construction, painting/drywall mostly. It is what he has always done. There are quite  a few submissive males  into construction they just hide it better because of the "macho" appearance that they have to keep, or so it has been my experience. But I have met sub males from all walks of life, even the military, so I do not think that their occupation was a reflection of their orientation.

You find subs doing all manner of things. It doesn't impact my relationship with them, though I'd hesitate to get involved with a doctor doing his residency; I guarantee he's not going to have time to serve properly right then!

In my world, everyone's a geek, but I am attracted to geeks!  I think there is a range of professions for all orientations, and I haven't found ANY correlation between job and D/s.  Most of us are in the kind of work where we are *not* in charge of everything.

The older male subs ;GENUINE( 36-62) I have met /have been with me all had highly stressful and demanding jobs and they were in a high position..
There was a lawyer...nurse..paint store owner..oilfield company owner..engineer..
real estate ownner...rancher...flight school owner...
The younger men I have had contact with..were all strivers..making thier way...saving money..and had good goals.

Older and younger WANNA BE..DO ME-s...almost always are drifting..with
lack of finanacial stability..mental problems...and commitment issues..

I was thinking along similar lines. I recall a conversation with a domme who was unable to get a submissive plumber to come to a munch because he was worried about running into someone from his field there who might be a dom.

Intuitively, I think that the potential for an interest in BDSM is distributed across population, and that one will see similar trends across BDSM as one would across the general population when all variables are controlled.

Whenever any study is done on BDSM demographics, I wonder how the sample population biases the results and what variables must be controlled. For instance, one study suggested that submissive men were of greater education and socioeconomic status than the US average. For this study, I would wonder where the data was taken. Was it taken from websites like collarme, or was it a BDSM organization? For a study based on collarme members, I think having regular access to a website defines some level of a filter for who can access it. I would want any such study about professions to be compared against a similar study done on say match.com. If it was a BDSM organization, I would ask the question whether membership into a social organization in a metropolitan area defines filters that do not allow for a fair comparison with the US average.

Another example is that based on a recent compilation of a poll results about Myers Briggs personality types in a BDSM discussion forum, it seemed that introverts and intuitive types were highly represented. The questions that came to mind were whether an internet discussion group was more likely to overrepresent introverts, and whether such discussions carried greater appeal for those who identify with the intuitive trait. In other words, how much were the results of that poll representative of those into BDSM versus those into BDSM who enjoy internet discussions.

Cheers,

Sea

I would have to respectfully disagree with you. I genuinely have the desire to serve and know that I would make the time to do so properly if and when given the chance, regardless of my residency.

I unload trucks at Walmart, where my job description means that by anybody's request I have to drop what I am doing and do whatever they need me for (even if it is conflicting with any other directives, as it usually is).  In short, I am everyone's bitch at work.  While my education was in the direction of the ministry, 90 + percent of my job experience has been as a bartender.  As pertaining to the OP's question; nomatter what a persons' inclination is, in this economy you generally take the job that hires.  When Walmart called, I had just nearly accepted a job with the decription of General Farmworker.

I have however, found that (due to my work ethic and results) alot of responsibility is placed on my shoulders at my job and have drawn very positive attention from many of my superiors (local management an much higher) and may find my way on the management track myself.

I don't think you will find much of a pattern.  Among the sub males in my circle of friends, there is a mortician, a civil service employee, a computer tech guy, a psychologist, fire fighter, and an engineer.
