That's interesting.  I've been in the US for 30 years and never heard anyone use it or claim to know what it means.  It's like "donkeys' years" and "wool gathering."

I know those as well!  Though I do say "a coon's age" rather than "donkey's years".  Maybe it's regional, there were lots of folks from the south movnig here after the war, and brought their wacky little sayings with them!

Donkeys years originated in the UK, as rhyming slang. Originally it was donkeys ears = years. Normally the second word would be dropped, so any strangers would only hear you say. I havent been there for donkeys.

These are the moments when I miss college!  My specialty within anthro was linguistics, and studying all the ways people express themselves, and how even grammar gets changed by accents...  le sigh.

"Coons' years' wouldn't be used in the UK, Lady Hib.  In fact "coon" isn't used at at all except amongst (generally quite old) racists.

It's for RACCOON, though, not that kind of coon!  They have indeterminate growth, raccoons.  So do possums. If the stupid things could avoid being hit by cars, they could become the new megafauna!

Nooooo, I know that the US version of "coon" comes from "raccoon".  We don't have them here, so that connection wouldn't generally be made . . .

Well there is that OTHER use of  "coon"...   that has largely gone out of favour.  Or at least I hope so.

It has gone out of favour, here, at least.  In fact, I don't think I've heard the word for years.  I'd bet a lot of those twenty and under wouldn't know that meaning.

The things a person can learn here!  I had no idea those stupid raccoons could live forever if they could just keep from becoming roadkill!  And yes, LadyHibiscus, I'm from your neck of the woods and have always used the phrase "a coon's age" to mean "a long long time".  It never even entered my mind that someone would consider it
derogatory.  I always understood it to refer to the four legged animals.

Me too!  I think it's from all those southern folks who came to work in the factories, honest!    They can't live forever, they just never stop GROWING.   I am still totally certain that there is a sasquatch of a raccoon out there...

LOL, I learned that most rats, particularly males, tend to grow all through their life-span, it's just their growth tends to slow a bit after their first 6 months (thank heavens for that)

To the OP:

Absolutely I've seen the alpha male pattern [alpha as in 'leader', not as in 'jerk']: My best subs were cops, profs, lawyers, doctors.

Most of the 'do me' wannabees who wash out of the application process early and the only two failed subs I've had are IT: they were switch-y, aspberger-y, living in their own little fantasy land, or all three.

But despite the temptation to add 'comp sci' as a hard limit, one can't always precisely choose one's occupation, so although it's a preliminary screen, I also pay attention to their vanilla hobbies. A guy who reads and volunteers is galaxies sexier than a golfer or gamer.

i know many in the lifestyle who are in the military. I'm a nurse i know communications and lawyers and instructors. the job doesn't seem to be of any real significance toward being in the lifestyle.

Interestingly, I have had several subs who are engineers.  My present slave is an engineer, too.

It seems more helpful to look at those occupations that are not represented amongst subs.  Are there any professional boxers who are subs, for instance?  Fighter aircraft pilots?  Greco-Roman wrestlers, astronauts, kings . . . .

Actually, strike the last.  Edward VIII was submissive with Wallis Simpson, apparently.

Coon is a RACIST term?  And, old racist at that!  NFW folks!  There is a group of people in the Deep South that call themselves CoonAss(es).  Others know them as Acadian, or Cajun.  Just another fun fact to know and tell.

As for occupations, my situation is similar to Darch's.  It seems that no sooner than having gotten the job that I have now; I have been fighting to keep it.  I find myself being everybody's bitch too.  I have survived every round of lay-offs so far.  I belive that this is due to my versatility, hard work, and, Superior-Skill-and-Daring.

I have had one potential mistress look askance at my employment situation.  Meade took me on as a trainee inspite of it.  She always tries to steer me to look for something else.

Resigned,
Mike
