What about Carla Bruni? Sophia Loren is also pretty swift. Angela Merkel is also really sharp, but it's hard to find a shot of her in her younger days.
While you can debate Madonna's beauty- she's absolutely brilliant in business.
Historically- Jackie Cochran comes to mind- she was one hell of a pilot and businesswoman, and was considered a knockout in her prime.
On a personal note, since I work in the sciences, most of the women I run into professionally are well educated and often pretty sharp. Since they tend to take to heart the cautions about lack of exercise, on average, they're probably more fit and less obese than the general population. (also not a bad bet for highly educated people.)
What I think your mates are confusing is the effect of makeup, personal grooming and photography. Scientists tend not to wear makeup or spend a lot of time blowdrying their hair. Although a few do, but most don't. Nevertheless, there are some very striking women in this population.
And having been to a bunch of meetings of various types of professionals, some of the most attractive women as a group I've seen are out of the financial industry, and a number of them are also pretty sharp.
So, I don't buy this stereotype- I think its more a function of grooming and photography.
