I agree with Marie. When I find someone attractive, I tend to take bits and pieces of conversations and turn it into: "oh, wow, he's so smart, intelligent, knowledgeable about ________ (fill in the blank)". Maybe he is. Or maybe I want him to be, as it validates how I feel about him.

It's got me thinking, is there some truth to the its rare to find intelligence and beauty in a person? Is it possible that as we get older we have to develop as a person for example in intelligence to attract the other sex, get further ahead because we can't rely on our looks anymore? And if anyone can come up with three attractive women who are also intelligent you'd be helping me out to shut the sexist pigs up lol [:D] Don't need 3....the last chic I dated was both stunning...and brilliant. (She covers all known math). Incredible woman.

Have you taken into account the fact that it's hard enough getting people to agree on what's "beautiful" or "intelligent" individually to begin with?

I realise that generalizations are damn near impossible to prove, but in my time I have indeed noticed that good looks and brains don't often go together. My personal theory on this is that the good looking ones learn early on that they can just coast on their looks, and they never really have to apply themselves. As many good looking, intelligent people as we can mention, I feel safe in saying we all know a damn sight more beautiful airheads.

Workwise you don't have to be a rocket scientist to work behind a bar and it attracts air heads, so yeah i work with a few. However the under manager and boss and other bloke i work with, who i was having the discussion with are extremely intelligent. Are they attractive? Erm one or two lol. My friends are a mixed bag but i couldn't use them as examples really as my work mates don't know them. Same with family.

Whose standard of beauty are we using? And whose standard of intelligence? The answer for both is so drastically different for every human being that it would be impossible to reach a consensus. I can think of dozens of women I find strikingly beautiful, and strikingly intelligent. The same goes for men. Would you agree with me about most of them, on one point or the other? I doubt it. And why would I care?

On the beauty side, I think it really boils down to personal preferences and what one is attracted to. My best friend when growing up was, in my opinion, really kinda funny looking... long face, close set eyes, absolutely no waist (I mean literally... where her boobs ended, her hips began), and chicken legs ending in pidgeon toed feet... but everywhere we went, guys just completely drooled over her. (lol... And completely ignored me... did wonders for my ego while growing up. [:-]) As for intelligence, I believe a lot has to do with how we classify ourselves and what type of intelligence we value.

I struggle to understand the whole premise. I've never in my life met a truly beautiful woman who wasn't intelligent. I've met women whose appearance was nothing short of stunning, but after speaking with them for only a few minutes, found nothing the least bit attractive about them because they were simply vapid. In my eyes, genuine beauty is just not possible unless there's someone living in there.

Intelligence cannot be measured too accurately but the structure of one's intellect can..with gifted ness and talent levels in many areas..and one's person's opinion of intelligent might be how good they are at poker...how many degress they have..what business sense they have? how well they intuite the needs of others..how well they can recite the alphabet// and BEAUTY as well..it can be socialized..from the environment..such as a space between teeth as beauty in some AF cultures..or a long neck or huge lips.. its can be personal..as in body preferences or what turns the person on for breeding purposes and passing on of seed at a primal level.....it can be beauty within... or a mass consciousness belief system one buys into I think the beautiful and intelligent women your mates speak of are probably centred around news worthy..famous...movie star -in the media beautiful as in public eye type..and yet they may know a woman at the bank..a woman at the grocery store ..a relative..who fits the criteria or an expanded one..it they released from western society's idea of BEAUTY and intelligence.. GQ

I think maybe we notice the brainy aspects of people who are not blessed with beauty simply because we are not distracted by that beauty and those folks cannot trade on their looks so they put their best foot forward - the intellect. Conversely, perhaps those who are blessed with good looks don't have to play their Mensa card as often or as hard. Not only is beauty in the eye of the beholder but intellect is, as well. It can be very subjective.

Most people confuse itelligence with education. They are not one and the same. Intellegence is the ability to recall and problem solve. Education is the facts (or what we believe to be facts) we have learned and use when applying our intelligence. We might say that a inner city street thug is uneducated and therefore not intelligent. What we really mean is that he hasn't had a formal, that is liberal arts college, education. In fact the street thug may be very intelligent and, what's more, very well educated - his education being in how to survive on the mean streets. There are probably a great many people who are highly intelligent but we don't recognize them as such because they never had the formal education that allows them to discuss Greek philosophy. Converely, there are many well educated idiots - people who have been stuffed full of facts but lack the intelligence to put them to use. I call them politicians. [:)]

This sums up how I feel about physical attractiveness for any gender. If the personality sucks and/or they are dumb as a fence post then the physical attractiveness alone is like painting one side of a barn.
