Why would the politicals of one country care what another country does? Did I miss something? Do the legislators in the UK make laws here in the US?

A welcome continuation of a trend that started 4 or 5 years ago.  Too bad we havent learned from the Euro-socialist mistakes and are headed down the same path that they realized is a dead end.

No... but what happens in one country (just one example - what trade policies they enact) will effect what happens in other countries.

Evidently, that must also include how those who waste time bickering about left and right are actually doing more harm than good to the country.

It would depend on who you asked... reading an opinion of one of our Supreme Court Justices, one might get the impression that very soon folks across the pond may soon be writing our laws.

Oh and wasn't one of the selling points for Obama that he would play nice with all of our European "friends" and we could solve all of the problems facing the world?  Or at least that they would like him, so they would be more willing to go along with his ideas?

I gets confused on these here sorts of things.

This is funny. The right wingers think center right parties doing well in the EU parliament election means something bad for Obama and Democrats. Let me break this to you gently, take a deep breath and sit down, Obama and the Democratic party would be right of center in Europe. The GOP would be a far right party in Europe. Greens and socialists are the left parties in Europe.

That's not always true. Their far right wing is more reactionary than our far right wing. Like the Iron Guard in Romania, which has been making a comeback. Of course organizations like that should be worrying for everyone, regardless of political affiliation.

Ideological bickering is a malady that has plagued all of humanity throughout history.

Musicmystery -> RE: For those on the political left....new worries (6/8/2009 12:45:57 AM)

The U.S. doesn't have a political left relative to global politics.

We have conservative moderates and hard-line reactionary right-wingers.

No, I'm not being sarcastic or ironic or snippy. I mean it objectively as typed.

Gitmo ?

DomKen was spot on, Obama would not be considered far left in Europe.

Crush -> RE: For those on the political left....new worries (6/8/2009 3:54:21 AM)

Actually, you are making unfounded claims, if you are claiming Obama is to the right of Europe:

European Socialism seems to outline many of the plans that Obama has for the US.

of course, that is discounting the impact that Islamic fundamentalists may have on these countries.

ed to add:  Try to actually have some valid research instead of your gut-level opinion when you discuss issues.

servantforuse -> RE: For those on the political left....new worries (6/8/2009 5:14:53 AM)

I think the hand writing is on the wall for oue next election in 2010. Mr. Obama should pay attention. Nancy Pelosi might have to fly comercial once again..

Agreed. Were Obama over here in the UK, he'd either be on the left wing of the Conservative party (the centre right) or the extreme right wing of New Labour (centre left). New Labour of course being the "Blair Stitch Up Project" whereby the Labour party ("old" Labour) was moved dramatically right, took on the clothes of the centre right and continued Conservative centre right economic policy to win in 1997 when the actual Conservative party had become unelectable.

It really is amusing to hear so many Americans complaining of Obama's "socialist policies" in this context. Heaven help them - or the nearest ER, if they should ever come across a real socialist, let alone a Marxist, like the ones we have here (and who polled dismally low in the Euro elections for the most part)!

Now, with the coming of Brown there was hope that the New Labour project might be turned back a little and we might actually have Labour - representing the people rather than big business and the bankers - but sadly not, and then of course the results of pursuing centre right economics came to pass in the financial crisis. The reason that the Labour party went down here was not because of failed socialist policies - it was because it abandoned its core electorate in favour of bankers and big business, and when that bit us all in the arse, it continued to do so. As a result the Labour vote stayed at home or went for a protest vote - note the Conservatives did not increase their vote - it was the Labour vote which melted away.

As for the continent - where for the most part its centre right parties in charge, the socialists/left wing did badly because the centre right put the blame for the crisis squarely on "Anglo-Saxon capitalism" - that means you lot in the US and us lot in the UK who follow whatever you do as if it were always the best thing ever. Such a model and its associated practices have long been resisted on the mainland of Europe which sees business as having a social function, not being an end in itself. By promoting the idea of reforming capitalism, economics, financial markets and business, the centre right did well; this idea was prevalent also at the recent G20, alongside the comparison with the Anglo Saxon solution - to prop up the existing dominant model as the US and UK wanted.

Politesub,

Yes, great American values like GITMO.
Or PATRIOT II
Or warrantless wiretapping
Or ("Advanced Interrogation Techniques") aka torture.
Or putting protesters into "Free Speech Zones"
Or creating a new term for organized character assasination: "Swift Boating"
Or "Extraordinary Rendition"

It all comes down to the same fucking thing, over and over, and over... Some pigs (namely the GOP) are more equal than others. Or at least they were.

I look forward to the day when the Dems realize that the republicans have shrunken and disappeared up their own ulcerated assholes. All we hear from them these days is fart gas expelled by their radio hosts. Once they do that, we can echew this "bipartisan" bullshit and get the real work of getting this country back on track started.

Sanity -> RE: For those on the political left....new worries (6/8/2009 6:23:01 AM)

Since Obama kept his Muslim roots hidden for so long, since he lied to us about that and has only just now began talking about it, how do you know he hasn't hidden a lot more about himself for convenience. I'll bet he knows he would be unelectable in this country were he to be more candid about many of his various positions.

Judging only by the company he's kept over the years he looks to be about as far left as anyone from Europe. He just doesn't talk about it, that's all.

well there is a precedent for your fears - that guy Reagan didnt make much of his Irish roots did he, unless it was convenient and useful - and he refused to stop IRA fundraising in the US - proving his terrorist sympathies.
