What could be more simple than that?

Sellers is recovering at a Rexburg hospital from injuries that including a broken arm, a punctured lung, a broken rib, a bite on the back of his head and abrasions. His wife said he stayed calm during the attack.

"After the bear left, he lay there for a few moments (and) found his arm behind his head - he thought it had been ripped off," she said.

Gallatin National Forest spokeswoman Marna Daley said Sellers, 35, surprised the grizzly and her cubs. He was equipped with bear repellent spray and a pistol, but the attack happened so quickly he wasn't able to use them, Daley said.

Once, when I was much younger, I was packing with my family for a camping trip up in the woods when my late Grandpa asked me in a very serious tone of voice if I knew how to tell the difference between a black bear and a grizzly bear.

I said no, and he said "Well then, you need to listen to me very close because this is important. You climb a tree, and if it's a black bear it'll come right up after ya. But if it's a grizzly, it'll just push the tree over."

Then just as we were leaving he said he was just funnin' me, and that if I saw a bear comin' after me, to climb a tree. Not just any tree, you've got to pick the right one - not too big around, and not too skinny. 'Cause if it's too big around the bear can get its arms around it to climb it and if it's too skinny some bears really can push them over.

Status: offline 		Then you'd best be damned quick and a crack shot - Billy The Kid might be OK but I wouldnt put good odds on many others! You might get two rounds off if youre lucky. In a panic what with this huge and deadly animal running towards you, you might even come close to hitting it, but unless you have an elephant gun it isnt going to stop necessarily but will simply be more pissed off than it was. By the time your lucky shot has any effect on the bear, you will already be dead.

The gun is there to frighten it - hopefully to startle it enough to stop, and even more hopefully to run away. That gives you time to find an escape route.

We have a few black bears that live in this area. The game commission was called, as we were afraid someone was going to shoot them, just for the sake of doing so.

The advice from the game commissioners (who would not get the bears, as they were causing no harm): if confronted, make yourself as large as possible by holding your arms straight up in the air and hop up and down, but do not approach.
Should the bear attack (unlikely) curl up in a ball and cover your head and neck as much as possible.
They also said none of these rules apply if it a mommy bear with cubs. In that case...haul ass.

While I was camping near Yellowstone last summer I read a sign near a campground entrance that read,


We advise that hikers wear bells so as not to startle bears. We also advise hikers to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.
Hikers should recognize the difference between Black Bear and Grizzly Bear droppings. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in it and smell like pepper.

Status: offline 		WE just had an attack here in AB  again...as man encroachs more and more on the  bear's homes..

The man is 76 and the bear was attacking his wife..he whacked it with his cane..as the bear came to him he stuck the whloe cane down its throat.and it ran off..

LAST year..a surveyor came between a mom and cubs and he said as he backed up she started to run full force..like a football  player and he knew he would get it so he ran and he said it over took him( they can outrun horse in a short distance) and rolled him..
He puuled out his little Swiss army knife and stabbed it over and over  and killed it.

I THINK IT IS LUCK...variables..fate...situational..you just never know

YOU can cover your head with your arms but I have heard of arms being chewed off..
a woman survived that one cause a man in his helicopter saw the atttack and came close to scare it..

I have met a few bears in my day and I have to say ...I backed up and kept eye contact...and tried not to shit my pants
We also make a lot of noise on hiking trails and in wooded area near our home.if walking..

I have also heard of a woman who ran but as she ran she threw off articles of clothing and the bear would stop at each one a bit ..sniffing...giving her time to get to the car..
and of course there were jokes..  yep...about her panties

We are told here in AB to never pick berries  or go hiking etc when on our period..hope that was nto too much info

BEARS in BANFF AND JASPER Park here now know BELLS=food in backpacks dinner bell..owwwwwwwww

With a pistol?  You better be carrying something around a .44 Magnum or larger.  Otherwise, you're just going to piss it off.  Large pistols like a .44 Magnum aren't exactly lightweight carry around guns suited for hikers.  Even with a large caliber pistol, if you don't hit a large bear in the right spot, you're still going to piss it off.

I do an awful lot of hiking in black bear country, and in the spring I usually carry a Colt .45 or  a .357. For blacks, I'm comfortable with those calibers. When I lived in Montana, it was a Ruger Blackhawk .44 mag. I felt reasonably safe with that. The country was open enough that I usually saw grizzlies long, long before they spotted me. Their eyesight sucks, and I adopted the habit of constantly checking over my downwind shoulder as I walked. Odd, I just realized a few weeks ago that I still instinctively do that when I'm hiking, even though it's been 30 years since I lived in the Rockies.

Are you really alive if you never leave the city though?

In my opinion, you're not. When I'm up in the wilderness, I feel connected to the universe, really alive for the first time every time I go up there. The night sky is fantastic, the air is so clean, and everything smells and tastes so much better. It's a far more natural experience, it's soul cleansing.

Down in the city you may be mauled by a car or a human, which is far more likely to happen than getting mauled by a bear while up there and so any risks associated with enjoying the great outdoors are completely acceptable to me.

GT, you've been to my place, looks very far from bear territory....just 15 mins away we have a buch of black bear sightings.  In fact, the hiking trail near me, where i often take the weeuns(Wekiwa Springs Forest) has a fair amount of black bears.

Next time you visit....wanna brush up on your bear survial skills??????
