The Qualities of a realized Master
by Master Skip Chasey  •              A Master is spiritually awake.  •              A Master is actively engaged in regular spiritual practice to strengthen and deepen his awakening.  •              To the best of his ability, a Master loves unconditionally.  •              A Master strives to be uncompromising in his integrity.  •              A Master is honest, trustworthy and consistent in his words and actions.  •              A Master is willing to be emotionally open and vulnerable, and does not hide his feelings but instead expresses them in a healthy manner.  •              A Master is self-sufficient.  •              A Master knows that while pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.  •              To avoid causing suffering in himself and others, a Master remains in control of his ego, even when he indulges it.  •              A Master does not accept the service of a slave casually, and does not take the responsibility of mastering a slave lightly.  •              A Master knows what he has mastered, what he has of lasting value to offer a slave.  •              A Master understands and accepts that he is engaging in a relationship of equals with his slave.  •              A Master accepts from his slave only that which is freely given.  •              A Master accepts the gifts of his slave’s body and trust with gratitude, and takes neither for granted.  •              If SM is to be a part of the Master/slave relationship, a Master has or acquires the requisite technical knowledge and skill.  •              A Master is fully conscious of his fetishes, and of the power they have over him, and acts on them only when doing so does not cause harm or suffering  •              A Master understands the importance and value of discipline and protocol, and develops discipline for himself and a protocol for his slave that is both nurturing and nourishing.  •              A Master possesses and uses healthy and functional communication skills, and insists that his slave do so as well.  •              A Master is willing to stand in the middle of his slave’s projections about the Master without moving, neither supporting nor fostering the illusion, nor destroying it.  •              A Master is willing to bear, without complaint or self-pity, the awareness that doing his best may at times not be good enough.  •              A Master is willing to admit his mistakes, acknowledge his shortcomings, and make amends whenever possible.  •              Despite appearances, in exercising his authority a Master’s primary intention is not to get his needs met, but to meet the needs of others as revealed by the Universe; it is a manner in which a Master fulfills his Divine purpose.  •              A Master fully understands and embraces the paradox of the Master/slave relationship.

Off the cuff? I feel about it pretty much the same as I feel about the code d'odalisque or whatever thread. Many of these attributes may be desirable to some people in certain circumstances, but they do not define what it means to be a leader. If someone else gets something out of this, coolness to them. But for me, if I was teaching someone how to be a good leader, I'd point 'em to Colin Powell's stuff or the business section in their local book store.

To me, this feels like a generalisation. Not every human being can fit into this one pigeon hole.

Masters are human, with human weaknesses like the rest of us. To strive for THIS level of perfect balance and insight is to me, not acknowledging one's humanity.

Sounds idealized pontificating to me.  Someone took some common sense good ideas an then tried to dress them up in a lot of impressive sounding dross to create a description of a "twue master".

While I believe there are qualities a dominant / master should possess (my own ideal), I also believe such things should mostly follow common sense, apply to everyday life, be practical (because if you can't practice what you preach, what's the point), and have rational explanations for why those qualities are important attached to the "list".  If I were to write up such a thing... which to date I haven't.

If this person wrote this intending it to be part of some personal declaration... I view that a lil differently.  Again, I don't agree with all of it, but it that's what this person believes they're entitled to it.

That's where I quit reading. I'm pretty sure if the first two lines make me struggle not to snort coffee all over the laptop, I'm safe skipping whatever mindless drivel has followed.

As others have said, to each their own... but to me this sounds like "Be like me or you're not TWUE!" crap from someone sad and lonely (original author, not poster)... but hey, been wrong before.

Like a few others, I'm not overly impressed but then I'm not overly unimpressed either. .

While I would not say I know Master Skip as a friend, both BossyShoeBitch and I have met him and I think she will second that knowing him in real life, he comes across better than his writing does on its own.  Merc and Beth are two that look up to Skip and will travel to see him speak.  I have dear personal friends (not that BSB and MercnBeth are not also personal friends but you guys know those three) who are very close to Master Skip and think the world of him.

The problem with lofty words is so few actually live up to them, I think he does a rather inspiring job of doing so.  I have learned a great deal from being around him, he has a serenty I envy, as it is something BSB knows I lack at a rather profound level, LOL!   I have known people who had mentored or served under him and they are rather amazing people.

He isn't a saint though.  I walked out of a presentation of his in protest over a difference in opinion over something.  However, I still have more respect for him than most people I know doing BDSM.

Let me be clear that my opinion on this should in no way be interpreted to mean that I don't think "Master Skip" is a great and wonderful guy and/or a great and wonderful leader. I don't know the guy so I'm not judging him. I will, however, judge the words written here.

My issue here is that all of those platitudes can simply be boiled down to "be good". OK, I'm all about "be good" and I think it's excellent advice for living one's life in general. What I do not understand is how "be good" can be effectively used to improve one's leadership skills.

Per my other thread (on which I got a sound drubbing *laughs*) about dominance and leadership, I was pretty thoroughly convinced that leadership is, in fact, the proper word for "dominance". And if that is correct, then I've seen way too many really solid pieces of work on leadership to give any credit to the kind of prose presented in the OP. Compare and contrast that to this excerpt from Colin Powell:

Lesson 1: Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off.

Good leadership involves responsibility to the welfare of the group, which means that some people will get angry at your actions and decisions. It's inevitable if you're honorable. Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity: You'll avoid the tough decisions, you'll avoid confronting the people who need to be confronted, and you'll avoid offering differential rewards based on differential performance because some people might get upset. Ironically, by procrastinating on the difficult choices, by trying not to get anyone mad, and by treating everyone equally "nicely" regardless of their contributions, you'll simply ensure that the only people you'll wind up angering are the most creative and productive people in the organization.

I personally find a great deal more specific and actionable information in that quote than I do in the entire OP. Nor did I pick that quote to "make my point". It's just lesson 1 of one of his commonly distributed writings on the topic, "A Leadership Primer".

Perhaps, if one can accept that Dominance is a character trait where the person has a natural tendency to take control of situations albeit at times poorly, then I'd say that Leadership is a skill which can be acquired/learned which enables the dominant person to direct their dominant tendencies more efficiently and effectively and which can if applied well, one can find that others are more willing to listen and follow.

So...it took me a little bit to get over the fact that the list alienates any secular Dom/me. And then, after that, I realized that most of what was left were numerous adages that either would apply to any decent, honest person (irrelevant of any BDSM factor) or were one-line equivalents to daily horoscopes.

I can go with that I guess. There is certiainly some difference between Carol and myself and I suppose the words "dominant" and "submissive" can be used as gestalts to short-hand it all. But that doesn't really improve the standing of the quoted text above. Fundamentally, one cannot improve one's character traits.. they just are. Skills, on the other hand, can be improved thereby leading to a better ability to do whatever it is that us doms do.

edited to add: Well, perhaps traits are not so completely inflexible as I initially wrote. Upon some reflection, traits can, at least, be tweaked, tuned and refined somewhat. But it's certainly true that the amount of potential change there is very limited compared to a "skill".
