The big day is about 4 months off. I have almost all the planning taken care of, except the music list.

The benefit of not having professionals do anything is the savings. The downside is that I have to get it done now. Not a huge issue, overall. However, I am one of those people who will know every word to a song on the radio but have no idea what the name is, who the artist was, or how to find it. And, if asked once it finishes playing, I doubt I could repeat the lyrics back.

So, I ask for help. What music do you like at weddings? I have some favorites already on a list, and I ahve gotten about 2 hrs play already, but I think we need more. I have the bride and dad song, the groom and mom song, and sibling dances. I have our first dance, now I just need the ambiance stuff. We might have more dancing, I have a good bit of slow music, but out in a park no one might want to. I am trying to stay away from faster dance music since I doubt the dance floor is going to be all that used.

You might contact maia09, she is a music genius and has done these before, I am sure she'd love to help.

Don't underestimate the draw of the dance floor, especially if you're going to serve alcohol.  When people get a little loosened up and they hear songs they like, they'll get out there.  The Electric Slide has been around forever, but people still get out there and do it, as well as the Cha Cha Slide and some new one called the Cupid Shuffle.  I see you're from Tennessee, so if it's a "country line dance" kind of crowd, play some of those.

Other songs I've noticed will draw people to the dance floor are "fun" songs like "I Will Survive", "Love Shack", "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", "YMCA", oldies like "The Locomotion", Motown stuff, 70's disco.

A song that's made a comeback lately is "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey.  At my son's wedding recently, they played it for their going UP the aisle song after the ceremony, and it was awesome.  Coincidentally, their DJ played it as the last song of the night at the reception, and even more coincidentally, it came on the radio right after I dropped them off at the airport for their honeymoon!  So, it's become "their" song.

Congratulations and good luck with the upcoming wedding!

On Our Wedding Andi and I wanted to walk down the Isle to This song.

Saddly we did not know about this band.

When we renew our Vows in 2012 this will be what we do it to.

I Love this ever since I saw it on Wedding Singer I knew I would do it.

This Song is just Beautiful to me.

I like modern latin/salsa-y for ambience.  it's up tempo without being too in-your-face.

a great song to get everyone up and laughing is either the chicken dance or the Macarena.  especially if you have a charismatic guest or even the best man give a little demo beforehand.

and my favorite song to request at weddings/functions is Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough"...it always gets people out of their seats and dancing.

Maybe I forgot to mention, this is at a park. No alcohol, and no actual formal dance floor. We dont have the benefit of the confines of a hall to keep people from feeling like they are being silly. I can see our crowd doing slow dances, and maybe a little of the faster group moving on the dance floor stuff, but bigger coordinated dances like the electric slide are out due to logistics (theres just not room for it) This is part of why I am looking for ideas of wedding songs and music, since most of what I have come up with on my wn isnt terribly feasible aside from the slower love songs. My guests will kill me if ALL I have are slow mushy songs though (althoght they might not really be surprised)

I have to watch language in lyrics, and implications as not to offend my church people and not get us kicked out of the park venue for inappropriate behavior (its in our contract). This is fun, but really hard to do.

I would go for- rare tunes mixed in.  A bit of everything.    ....big bands, ballroom, blue grass- yoddle, maybe a gospel tune- ....the point- not typical worn out- predictable fare.

"Once I was happy and had a good wife
had enough money to last me for life
met up with a girl and we went on a spree
she taught me to smoke and drink whisky

cigarettes and whiskey and wild wild woman
it'll drive you crazy it'll drive you insane(X2)

Cigarettes a blot on the whole human race
A man is a monkey with one on his face
that's my definition and I'll tell you my brother
A fire one end and fool on the other

Cigarettes and whiskey and wild wild woman,
I'll drive you Crazy, it'll drive you insane(x2)

And now good people, I'm broken with faith
The lines on my face make a well written page
I'm weavin' this story -- how sadly but true
On women and whiskey and what they can do

Cigarettes and whiskey and wild wild woman,
I'll drive you Crazy, it'll drive you insane(x2)

Wild the cross at the head of my grave
For women and whiskey here lies a poor slave.
Take warnin' poor stranger, take warnin' dear friend
In wide clear letters this tale of my end...."

Regarding the music, I can't help much 'cause I'm so much like you in that respect.  However, I'd recommend looking at the ages of your guests and mixing in music from their eras... a little bit of something for everyone.

Savings aside, enjoy this time putting your own wedding together... it's going to mean so much more to you down the road.   If hell froze over and I were to marry again, I'd definitely do everything myself.

Congratulations, DV and best wishes.
